Chapter 4 The Price of My Future

Autor: Sunny Steppe
The autumn wind was bitterly cold.

However, a seed called ambition still took root and grew wildly in my young heart.

After I graduated from middle school, I was admitted to the best elite private high school in the entire state because I'd scored the highest grades in the city.

The night my acceptance letter arrived, my mother and father didn't sleep a wink as they held the embossed envelope with wide eyes.

I heard them sighing over and over in the living room through the thin crack of my bedroom door.

After all, that school was filled with children from wealthy and influential families. Just the first semester's tuition, fees, uniforms, and dorm costs came to a whopping 50,000 dollars.

"50 grand… We couldn't come up with that kind of money even if we sold everything we had."

My mother wiped away her tears, despair filling her voice.

My father took a hard drag on his unlit cigarette, his fingers trembling.

"The money's one thing. I'll sell my blood or work under the table on shady construction sites if I have to. What I'm really worried about is Shawn showing up in worn-out clothes and getting laughed at by those rich kids.

"It's one thing for us to suffer, but I refuse to let our son be looked down on at school."

Before dawn, my father changed into a freshly washed, but clearly threadbare shirt that was so faded that it had nearly turned white.

For the first time in forever, my mother dug out a cheap tube of lipstick and put on a little makeup.

"Shawn, stay home and study. Don't worry about the money." My father rested his calloused hand on my head and forced an awkward smile on his lips. "Your mom and I will take care of the tuition. You should just focus on school."

As I watched them walk away with steel in their eyes, I knew exactly where they were going.

The floating comments told me they were going to beg George for money. The same cousin who had thrown my father out of the family years ago and taken over the old house.

George had struck it rich as a construction contractor. Now, he was a small-time boss and drove a luxury car.

Back when my father had been so desperate he dug through trash cans looking for food, George had passed by without even giving him a second glance. Even worse, he'd also spat on the ground in disgust right in front of my father.

My mother and father had once sworn that they'd rather starve to death than ever ask him for help.

Yet, here they were, willingly lowering their heads and knocking on their enemy's door all for the sake of my future.

They came home around noon. Neither of them looked well, and my father's fists were clenched so tightly his knuckles had turned white.

"That bastard George deliberately splashed hot coffee all over Frankie. He even made Tanya wash his wife's feet before agreeing to give Frankie a job. Frankie swallowed every bit of that humiliation for the sake of the 50,000 dollars."

My heart clenched in fury as I read the comment.

From that day on, my father took the hardest job at George's construction site.

He left before sunrise every morning and would only drag himself home well after midnight.

His already slight shoulders became a little more hunched each day due to carrying loads weighing hundreds of pounds.

My mother pushed herself even harder after that visit. During the day, she would haul goods at the wholesale market. Then, she would wear herself out making grilled cheese sandwiches to sell at night.

They worked like two tireless pack mules, scraping out a living any way they could just to give me the chance to attend that elite high school.

I silently gritted my teeth as I watched their faces grow gaunter by the day.

Three days before school started, my father was brought home at dusk on the back of a battered three-wheeled cart that hauled bricks.

He was covered in blood, and his dusty work clothes had turned a dark crimson.

His right leg was twisted at a horrifying angle, the broken bone nearly piercing through his pant leg.

The moment my mother saw him, she let out a piercing scream and threw herself at him, sobbing. "Frankie! What happened to you, Frankie? Please don't scare me!"

Cold sweat poured down my father's face, and his lips had gone pale from the pain. Even so, he still managed to grin at us, flashing us a mouthful of his white teeth.

Then, he shakily pulled a plastic bag from inside his shirt.

"Shawn, please. Put in a good word for Victor. He'll never do it again. Please have mercy on us!" George's wife cried. My father let out a cold laugh as he straightened from his slight hunch. The easygoing look had vanished from his face, replaced by the hard edge he had worn back when he was still running the streets. He grabbed the large, coarse broom leaning behind the door and swung it at them without a shred of mercy."Get the hell out! Did you ever think about showing us some mercy when you ruined my leg all those years ago? Did you ever think about being merciful when you bullied Tanya when she was just 15?"Yet, now you're here pretending to be pitiful? I'll break your damn legs if you ever dare show your face in front of Shawn again!"The broom slammed across Victor's back as my father drove him and his mother out the front door. Then, he slammed the door shut with a bang and locked it for good measure.I had never felt anything as satisfying as watching them finally get

The applause grew louder and louder, crashing across the entire field like a tidal wave.Countless students and teachers broke down in tears, many of them openly sobbing after hearing my tale.Even the dean, who had been about to pull the plug on me moments earlier, stood there with red rimmed eyes before silently lowering his head.Victor's face turned ghostly white as our classmates turned on him, their scorn and insults ringing in his ears. Even the lackeys who used to follow him around started jeering. In the end, he fled in humiliation, covering his face as he made his escape. My vision was blurry with tears as I stood on the stage and thought, 'Mom, Dad, I can finally clear your names in front of everyone. You were never trash. You're my heroes.'Public opinion about my family did a complete 180 now that the truth was finally out in the open. The school issued an official statement to every student, clearing my name and strongly condemning those who had spread malicious rum

Eventually, the school administration called me into the dean's office due to the enormous pressure in the form of a petition signed by the school's affluent parents. The dean looked grim as he slammed a stack of printed forum posts onto the desk in front of me."Shawn, your grades are outstanding, but we cannot tolerate rumors that damage the school's reputation. If you can't put an end to this before the SATs, then we'll have no choice but to revoke your guaranteed admission spot for the sake of the school's reputation. "We may even have to ask you to withdraw."When I returned to the classroom, I was met with strange looks, whispered conversations, and open hostility from every direction. As I read the floating comments in front of me, I felt like the monster in my heart was trying to claw itself out of my heart."George is pure evil! He's trying to ruin Shawn's life!""Frankie and Tanya are at home, so desperate that they're praying to every deity that would listen to help

"This is the money you paid for with your lives. And… this is me paying it back," I whispered tearfully.I hired a cab and took my father to the best orthopedic hospital in the city the first thing that morning.I paid whatever it took to have the state's top orthopedic specialist perform revision surgery on the metal plate in his leg.Fortunately, the doctor smiled after taking a look at my father's X-rays. "Once you've had the surgery, you'll be right as rain as long as you keep up with your rehab. You won't be needing a cane anymore."My father gently touched the thick cast wrapped around his leg and cried like a child as he lay in his hospital bed. He covered his face with his weathered hands, his tears through his cracked fingers as he cried away years of humiliation and pain. Then, I used the remaining money to rent a legitimate storefront in the busiest part of the night market for my mother.I had a brand-new roll-up door, bright lights, and air conditioning installed i

The blond gangster raised the steel pipe as if he was about to bring it down on my right arm.I stood my ground, betraying not even the slightest hint of panic.Instead, I pulled my phone from my pocket, tapped the record button, and let the pale glow of the screen light up my emotionless face."I've already called the police. They'll be here in three minutes. How much did George pay you? Was it 10,000 or 20,000?"I spoke as casually as if I were merely haggling over prices at a farmers market and not being threatened with a steel pipe. The thugs froze and exchanged uneasy glances. They clearly hadn't expected a high school kid to stay this calm with a steel pipe pointed at him.I let out a scoff and dangled the bait that I'd prepared in advance."I'll pay double what he promised you. However, I want the recording of him telling you to beat me up, along with the transactions of him illegally using his company's funds to pay you. "Think about it. You'll make 20,000 at most if y

George's face turned puce, utterly livid. The veins on his forehead bulged as he pointed a finger at my face and roared in rage, "You little punk! How dare you talk to me like that! Who the hell do you think you are?"Victor was even angrier than he was. He felt so humiliated that he actually flipped a desk over on the spot.I stared them down coldly, my voice firm as I spoke into the microphone so even the people sitting at the furthest edges of the classroom could hear me."My dad got hurt doing honest work. Every dollar he earned was clean, and he did that with his own two hands. He's a thousand times more honorable than a heartless contractor like you, someone who profits off other people's suffering and treats human lives like they're worthless."If you insult my dad one more time, I promise Victor won't be able to hold his head up high in this class again."I crushed both father and son with my grades and composure.I left George and Victor utterly humiliated right in front
