Chapter 4

Author: Nameless
Moments later, the same voice called out again, sounding slightly panicked.

"Why is he so quiet? Did something actually happen to him?"

"Who cares?" Isaac's voice chimed in. "Even if something happens to him, I'll take care of my mom and dad when they're old. Let him figure out how to break the door down himself. Let's go."

Their footsteps gradually faded away. I closed my eyes and prepared to get some sleep. Then suddenly, a strong, choking smell filled the air.

It was smoke.

The fire spread quickly. In less than three minutes, the smoke was so thick that I could barely breathe. The equipment room had become a giant furnace.

I didn't scream for help or try to break down the door. I just hugged a basketball and curled up in the corner farthest from the door.

My consciousness began to fade.

Maybe this was for the best. Maybe I could finally succeed this time.

No jumping off buildings, no turning on the gas, no getting pulled back out of the water. Just quietly slipping away without causing anyone trouble.

Once this life was over, I could finally leave this broken body behind and move on to my next life.

No more scars covering my body. No more wrists broken time and time again. No more burn marks on my calves. I wouldn't have to spend another life desperately trying to please people while living in pain.

Just as I was about to lose consciousness, a deafening bang rang out. The door had been kicked open.

A figure rushed through the flames and grabbed me off the floor.

It was Rebecca.

Her face and clothes were streaked with soot, and her eyes were filled with panic and fear. "Carl! Wake up!"

She carried me out of the fire. The lawn outside was already packed with people.

When Isaac and his friends saw me being pulled out, their expressions were a mix of shock, guilt, and a barely noticeable flicker of disappointment.

I was laid down on the grass and greedily gulped in the fresh air.

Rebecca crouched in front of me, her voice more frantic than I'd ever heard it. "How are you? Are you hurt anywhere?"

I looked at her, pressing a hand to my wound as a violent coughing fit shook my body.

"Rebecca, you saved me again."

I stared at her coldly, genuine regret in my voice. "Why did you save me? I was so close to finally dying."

Rebecca's expression turned livid. She grabbed me by the shoulders and practically screamed, "Why didn't you call for help?! Why didn't you bang on the door? Do you really want to die? Carl Johnson, what the hell are you trying to do?"

I didn't answer her. Instead, I turned my gaze toward Isaac standing in the crowd.

He immediately jumped up like a cat whose tail had been stepped on. "It wasn't me! I didn't start the fire! I don't know how it happened!"

His friends quickly backed him up.

"We'd already left. It has nothing to do with us!"

"Carl wanted to get the basketballs. We just took him to the equipment room!"

Just then, the head of security ran up, panting heavily. He reported to the school administrators, "We checked. An old electrical wire shorted out and started the fire."

Hearing that it was an accident, everyone breathed a sigh of relief.

Isaac visibly relaxed, then immediately put on his usual caring act. "Carl, thank goodness you're okay! It's our fault. We shouldn't have played that kind of prank on you and let you go get the equipment by yourself."

He reached out to help me up.

I shrank back instinctively. Then, I broke down in front of everyone, crying at the top of my lungs.

"Isaac, I'm sorry. I should've stayed in there, but I don't like dark rooms. Next time, can you let me die in a different way?"

Rebecca rushed over and grabbed me, checking me from head to toe."Are you okay? Did you get hurt?" she asked worriedly.I shook my head. "What could possibly happen to me? They're the ones who got hurt."The officer in charge finally snapped out of it. He walked over and said with a look of genuine admiration, "You're something, kid. You took them all down by yourself?"I nodded."Wait, I thought they were armed?" Rebecca asked anxiously. The officer shook his head. "We searched them. There weren't any guns."Rebecca turned to me, confusion written all over her face.I gave her a quick wink. "Oh. I must've been mistaken. It was pretty dark."The police soon took the three men away. Before leaving, the man with the snake tattoo shot me a murderous glare.I wasn't afraid in the slightest. I knew he'd never walk free again. With the home invasion and his previous criminal records, he'd probably spend the rest of his life behind bars.Once they were gone, only Rebecca and I wer

I never expected to see that man again. That night, Rebecca had an important business dinner, and Mom and Dad were both away on business, leaving me alone in the house.Sometime after midnight, a noise downstairs woke me. I quietly slipped out of my room and crept over to the second-floor railing to look down.Three figures were rummaging through the living room. One of them was unmistakably the man with the snake tattoo from earlier that day. They were here to rob the house.I didn't scream or call the police. Instead, I quietly went back to my room, locked the door, and called Rebecca."Hello?" It took a long time for her to answer, and I could hear loud music and chatter in the background."Rebecca, there are burglars in the house," I said calmly as if I were stating a fact. There was a brief pause before she spoke again, her voice tense and urgent. "Don't be scared. Hide somewhere. I'm coming home right now!""No need," I said. "I just need you to do one thing for me."Re

"Give me one more chance, please?" pleaded Rebecca.I looked down at her and stayed silent for a moment. Then I said, "Okay."Rebecca's head snapped up, a flicker of surprise and hope in her eyes.I crouched down in front of her and gave her an innocent smile. "You want to make it up to me, right? That's easy."I pointed toward the tall sycamore tree outside the window. "Jump from there. If you survive, I'll forgive you."The hope on Rebecca's face instantly vanished. After Isaac was sent away, the house fell eerily quiet. Mom and Dad tried to make up for everything by giving me more material comforts and attention, but I still felt like an outsider in my own family. They found me the best psychiatrists in the city. They all said my PTSD was severe and that I'd need long-term treatment. From then on, Rebecca drove me to my sessions every weekend. We barely spoke during the drives. She was like a dutiful chauffeur, and I was just a passenger, completely detached from everything

"Take your son and get the hell out of here!" Dad snarled. The couple flinched and didn't dare say another word. They dragged Isaac toward the door as he screamed and fought to get away. He desperately clung to the doorframe, digging his fingernails into it as he refused to let go."Mom! Dad! Rebecca! I'm sorry! I don't want to go with them! They're monsters!" His handsome face was twisted with fear, making him almost unrecognizable.Outside, the woman started cursing loudly, while the man barked impatiently."Shut your mouth, you cursed bastard! If you weren't so useless, we wouldn't have had to come all this way!" the man chided. "Keep moving! If we get back late, your brothers and sisters will starve!"Their voices gradually faded into the distance.Silence fell over the living room. Mom finally broke down, burying her face in her hands as she sobbed quietly.Dad slumped against the sofa, looking as if he'd aged ten years in an instant.Rebecca stood by the window, staring i

Isaac was rushed to the hospital. Lying in the hospital bed, he cried, his voice barely a whisper."Mom, I'm really sorry. Please don't kick me out. I promise I'll never do it again. I'll listen to whatever you say. Just please don't send me away," he pleaded. There was no sympathy in Mom's eyes, only cold disappointment. "Isaac, do you remember the day you came to our family?"Isaac stared at Mom in silence."You were small and skinny, just like you are now. You held my hand and promised you'd be a good boy." Mom furrowed her brows."We believed you and treated you like our own flesh and blood," she said. "We gave you all our love, trying to make up for the guilt we felt over Carl. And what did you do?"She yanked her hand away from his grip. "You lied, put on an act, and bullied Carl. You took our love for granted and used it as an excuse to do whatever you wanted. Isaac, I'm so disappointed in you."With that, Mom turned and walked out without looking back.Isaac scrambled o
