Chapter 3

Author: Nameless
The psychiatrist repeated every word I'd said to my parents.

His final diagnosis was simple—there was nothing wrong with me. I was just using an extreme way to protect myself and get back at the world.

My mental state was like a string stretched to its breaking point. Any additional pressure could make it snap completely. For me, dying was the best way to protect myself.

After hearing this, Mom locked herself in her room for the entire day. Dad smoked one cigarette after another.

Only Rebecca still believed that I was putting on an act to gain sympathy. "Carl is faking it! He's fooled you all! He just wants to get rid of Isaac!"

Isaac hid behind Rebecca, looking at me timidly, but I could see a hint of smugness in his eyes.

"Mom, Dad, don't worry. I'll get along with Carl and help him get better," he assured them.

Maybe he thought that as long as Rebecca still believed him, no one could touch him.

The atmosphere at home grew increasingly suffocating.

To ease the tension, my parents decided to enroll me in the elite private school Isaac and Rebecca attended. They naively believed that being around normal kids my age might help me get better.

Isaac was the first to object. He threw a fit, screaming in disbelief, "I don't want to go to school with him! Everyone's going to laugh at me!"

For the first time, Dad spoke to him sternly. "This decision is final."

Isaac angrily ran back to his room, but I knew he wouldn't let it go that easily.

Sure enough, on my first day, I became the center of attention. Word had spread that the Johnsons' long-lost son was a lunatic fresh out of a mental hospital.

Isaac's friends were fussing over him, then whispering and pointing at me.

"Isaac, your brother looks so creepy."

"I heard he tried to blow up your whole family by leaving the gas on! If that isn't crazy, what is?"

"You'd better watch your back around him."

Isaac made a show of looking hurt. "Don't say that. My brother is just sick. We're family. He wouldn't hurt me."

The more he defended me, the more frightening everyone thought I was.

It didn't take long for everyone to start ostracizing me. No one talked to me. Someone drew a line around my desk to keep me separated from everyone else, and ink was splashed all over my textbooks.

I couldn't care less. Compared to what I endured at the orphanage, this was nothing.

During PE, the teacher let us choose which sports we wanted to play. One of the students sent me to get some basketballs from the equipment room.

The moment I stepped inside, the door clicked shut behind me. The room went completely dark.

I heard Isaac and his friends laughing outside.

"Lunatics belong in cages! Who let him out of the hospital anyway?"

"Isaac, do you think he'll go crazy in there and start biting himself?"

Isaac laughed and said, "Maybe! Why don't you crack the door open and check?"

"No way! I'm not looking!"

There were still 40 minutes left until the end of class. All I had to do was sit there and wait.

The darkness and cramped space gave me a sense of comfort I hadn't felt in a long time. I even started to doze off.

I didn't know how much time passed before an impatient voice came from outside.

"Hey! You dead in there, psycho? Make a sound if you're alive!"

I ignored him.

Rebecca rushed over and grabbed me, checking me from head to toe."Are you okay? Did you get hurt?" she asked worriedly.I shook my head. "What could possibly happen to me? They're the ones who got hurt."The officer in charge finally snapped out of it. He walked over and said with a look of genuine admiration, "You're something, kid. You took them all down by yourself?"I nodded."Wait, I thought they were armed?" Rebecca asked anxiously. The officer shook his head. "We searched them. There weren't any guns."Rebecca turned to me, confusion written all over her face.I gave her a quick wink. "Oh. I must've been mistaken. It was pretty dark."The police soon took the three men away. Before leaving, the man with the snake tattoo shot me a murderous glare.I wasn't afraid in the slightest. I knew he'd never walk free again. With the home invasion and his previous criminal records, he'd probably spend the rest of his life behind bars.Once they were gone, only Rebecca and I wer

I never expected to see that man again. That night, Rebecca had an important business dinner, and Mom and Dad were both away on business, leaving me alone in the house.Sometime after midnight, a noise downstairs woke me. I quietly slipped out of my room and crept over to the second-floor railing to look down.Three figures were rummaging through the living room. One of them was unmistakably the man with the snake tattoo from earlier that day. They were here to rob the house.I didn't scream or call the police. Instead, I quietly went back to my room, locked the door, and called Rebecca."Hello?" It took a long time for her to answer, and I could hear loud music and chatter in the background."Rebecca, there are burglars in the house," I said calmly as if I were stating a fact. There was a brief pause before she spoke again, her voice tense and urgent. "Don't be scared. Hide somewhere. I'm coming home right now!""No need," I said. "I just need you to do one thing for me."Re

"Give me one more chance, please?" pleaded Rebecca.I looked down at her and stayed silent for a moment. Then I said, "Okay."Rebecca's head snapped up, a flicker of surprise and hope in her eyes.I crouched down in front of her and gave her an innocent smile. "You want to make it up to me, right? That's easy."I pointed toward the tall sycamore tree outside the window. "Jump from there. If you survive, I'll forgive you."The hope on Rebecca's face instantly vanished. After Isaac was sent away, the house fell eerily quiet. Mom and Dad tried to make up for everything by giving me more material comforts and attention, but I still felt like an outsider in my own family. They found me the best psychiatrists in the city. They all said my PTSD was severe and that I'd need long-term treatment. From then on, Rebecca drove me to my sessions every weekend. We barely spoke during the drives. She was like a dutiful chauffeur, and I was just a passenger, completely detached from everything

"Take your son and get the hell out of here!" Dad snarled. The couple flinched and didn't dare say another word. They dragged Isaac toward the door as he screamed and fought to get away. He desperately clung to the doorframe, digging his fingernails into it as he refused to let go."Mom! Dad! Rebecca! I'm sorry! I don't want to go with them! They're monsters!" His handsome face was twisted with fear, making him almost unrecognizable.Outside, the woman started cursing loudly, while the man barked impatiently."Shut your mouth, you cursed bastard! If you weren't so useless, we wouldn't have had to come all this way!" the man chided. "Keep moving! If we get back late, your brothers and sisters will starve!"Their voices gradually faded into the distance.Silence fell over the living room. Mom finally broke down, burying her face in her hands as she sobbed quietly.Dad slumped against the sofa, looking as if he'd aged ten years in an instant.Rebecca stood by the window, staring i

Isaac was rushed to the hospital. Lying in the hospital bed, he cried, his voice barely a whisper."Mom, I'm really sorry. Please don't kick me out. I promise I'll never do it again. I'll listen to whatever you say. Just please don't send me away," he pleaded. There was no sympathy in Mom's eyes, only cold disappointment. "Isaac, do you remember the day you came to our family?"Isaac stared at Mom in silence."You were small and skinny, just like you are now. You held my hand and promised you'd be a good boy." Mom furrowed her brows."We believed you and treated you like our own flesh and blood," she said. "We gave you all our love, trying to make up for the guilt we felt over Carl. And what did you do?"She yanked her hand away from his grip. "You lied, put on an act, and bullied Carl. You took our love for granted and used it as an excuse to do whatever you wanted. Isaac, I'm so disappointed in you."With that, Mom turned and walked out without looking back.Isaac scrambled o
