Chapter 4

Author: Fickle
Madison was indeed in poor health, but that didn't give her an excuse to make snide remarks or act however she pleased.

I went back to my room without bothering to argue with them any further.

With a family like the Hendrickses, it was no wonder Sophie couldn't stand being here and was itching to leave immediately.

I stared at the friend request that had just popped up on my phone, wondering why Sophie wanted to add me. But in the end, I decided to accept it.

There was none of the drama between the real and fake heiresses, where we accused each other or tore off pretenses. Instead, all I got was a sincere message from her.

"Things were a little hectic that day, so I forgot to give you your gift. Also, Mom and Dad wanted to know when you're coming home for dinner."

My heart softened for a moment, then I replied, "I'd like some ribs."

Mom could have contacted me anytime, but having Sophie reach out instead helped bridge the distance between us. She wanted to see both of us getting along well.

As long as that made her happy, that was enough for me.

A knock sounded at the door, and Madison called out, "Emma, I made seafood soup. You haven't tried any."

I was getting a little annoyed, but Madison seemed determined to stay there until I opened the door.

When I finally did, she stood there, holding a bowl of still-warm soup. Her eyes lit up when she saw me.

"Emma, I made this myself today. I hope you can give me a chance to make it up to you…"

She raised the bowl higher and held it out in front of me.

I smirked slightly, looking at her amusedly. "Why do you keep coming to me? Do you enjoy deliberately approaching me so you can get humiliated?"

Madison's expression twisted for a split second, but she maintained her smile. "I don't know what you're talking about, Emma. After 20 years apart, I just want us to be a little closer.

"If you hadn't been found, I would've felt even worse for you."

But her expression didn't change as she spoke. There wasn't a hint of genuine concern on her face.

If I hadn't been found, Sophie probably would've continued being bullied by Madison.

I didn't reach for the bowl.

Just as the tension between us reached a standstill, footsteps suddenly sounded from downstairs.

The moment Madison heard that, she seemed to "lose" her balance. Her foot gave way, and she stumbled toward me, sending the seafood soup spilling in my direction.

Just before it could hit me, I grabbed Madison and pulled her in front of me, making her shield me from the liquid. She hit the floor hard, landing right in the puddle of soup.

I stepped back and shut the door without another word, listening as the voices outside grew frantic. I heard Madison's attempts to suppress her pain, along with the urgent knocking at my door.

Only then did I slowly open the door, feigning surprise. "Maddy, how did you end up on the floor? What happened?"

On the other hand, Madison cried for a while but refused to explain what had happened. She only murmured, "Emma didn't push me! I just wanted to bring her something to eat. She barely ate anything at dinner, so…"

She shot me a quick glance, then withdrew her gaze. "Sorry, Emma. I shouldn't have bothered you."

With just a few sentences, she painted me as the vicious sister without giving me the chance to defend myself.

But I wasn't about to let her pin this on me and not give me a chance to turn things around.

I raised an eyebrow, ignoring her outstretched hand and Jude's scrutinizing gaze. Instead, I said in return, "I'm allergic to seafood. Was the soup you brought me today meant to kill me?"

It wasn't as if I'd never mentioned it. On the contrary, on the very day Susan picked me up, she'd shown how much she cared about me and specifically asked about my allergies.

Even on the day I returned, one of the household staff had asked me about my dietary restrictions to make sure the food suited me.

Madison choked up. She shook her head repeatedly, but she struggled to get back on her feet. By the end, she looked utterly miserable.

The documents I'd found in the safe that day contained more than just the asset transfer agreements Susan had pressured Madison into signing. There was also a paternity test from 20 years ago.Michael wasn't innocent either.Money that had supposedly been donated to charity had actually ended up in his own pockets. The study was filled with documents recording his schemes. There were even records of paid publicity campaigns he'd used to boost his reputation, staged videos of him doing charity work, and evidence of illegal dealings with other companies. For a long time, the Hendricks family had been all show and no substance. The real reason Sophie had been cast aside wasn't because she'd done something wrong. It was simply because she had discovered the truth that the entire family was built on lies.Watching my parents scream and fight, I felt nothing but contempt."You bitch! I should've gotten rid of you the day you were born!" Susan shrieked.I remained expressionless, comp

The whispers grew louder and louder until eventually, everyone in the crowd was pointing at Madison and talking about her. Everyone said she was a jealous younger sister, desperate for attention, who deliberately framed the family's newly found real daughter.I glanced toward Susan, who was standing hidden in the shadows. A cold gleam flashed in her eyes as she smiled at me.At that exact moment, the lights in the hall suddenly went out. One of the crystal chandeliers swayed violently before it came crashing down.In an instant, the fallen chandelier smashed into nearby wine glasses and ignited the spilled alcohol. Flames erupted across the floor. Most people only caught a glimpse of a moving figure, followed by a piercing scream. Then, it was silent.Panic swept through the room as guests fled toward the exit.Jude pulled me out of harm's way. But Madison wasn't as fortunate. She was struck in the chest, and blood pooled rapidly beneath her."Mom, save me…" Her voice was weak

I nodded, mentally drawing a line through Jude's name.Standing nearby, Susan looked uncomfortable. Still, she continued mingling with socialites as though nothing was wrong. But every time someone mentioned me, she somehow managed to steer the conversation back to Madison. The party reached its peak. Just as everyone was enjoying themselves, the front doors suddenly burst open. Madison's aggrieved voice rang throughout the hall, "Emma, why did you lock me in the hospital and stop me from coming? If you hate me that much, you could've just said so!"Countless eyes in the crowd lit up. The room fell silent as everyone waited to see how this wealthy family's scandal would unfold.Seeing the situation get out of hand, Jude quickly stepped forward to stop Madison. But I raised my hand, stopping him. "If anyone should be upset about false accusations, it should be me," I said calmly. There was no trace of grievance in my voice as I looked at Madison calmly. Her expression was cold.

I shrugged and tilted my head, looking at Madison. "What? Are you scared? Or do you really not know why I came back?"Her smile stiffened. She looked as though she didn't understand what I was talking about. But I was done speaking in riddles. My gaze fell to the gold locket hanging around her neck, and I found it ironic. She thought everything was under her control, that everything she'd been given was rightfully hers. But she was wrong."Do you really not know? Or are you just refusing to believe that everything you have is built on a lie?""Shut up!" Madison finally snapped. She strode toward me and actually raised a hand at me.I caught her wrist before she could touch me, then shoved her arm aside and slapped her across the face. I didn't hold back. Her head snapped to the side, and she staggered several steps backward before crashing into a vase.As the vase shattered, I looked down at her, a smile playing on my lips. "Just as I thought. Stupid."Clutching her cheek, Madis

"I was just worried. I didn't mean anything by it. You're my daughter. How could I not want what's best for you? But you know Maddy's condition. She's fragile, but she's been nothing but sincere with you. Otherwise, she wouldn't have made you the center of attention at this birthday celebration," Susan said. The event was being held for the Hendricks family's 20-year-old daughter. Every guest invited was a prominent figure in Bellburg. The spotlight should've belonged to Madison. Instead, she'd offered it to me.I softened my expression and, for the first time, slipped my arm through Susan's affectionately. "I only felt hurt because of something Maddy said. She's been by your side for 20 years. Of course, I'm jealous. But don't worry. From now on, I'll treat Maddy like my real sister. I'll always put her first!"Seeing the sincerity in my eyes, Susan smiled. She patted my hand and headed downstairs to prepare for the party. As soon as she was gone, my smile disappeared. I walked st

After all, without someone powerful backing her, how could a receptionist have dared to speak rudely to a stranger? Besides, the reception handled countless visitors and messages every day, so placing someone there was the best option.A smile tugged at my lips as I watched her stubbornly reach for me. I stepped aside, avoiding her touch. My vice president ID badge fell to the floor. A bodyguard nearby bent down and picked it up for me. I took it back expressionlessly and said calmly, "You're fired."With that, I called security over and entered the elevator alone.I made my way upstairs. Under Jude's management, the company was running like a well-oiled machine, certainly living up to his reputation. But before I could open the door to his office, a heated argument erupted from inside."How could you do this? What could you possibly gain from this? That couple treated Emma very well. Why did you have to scheme against them?""What do you know? Everything I've done is for Mad
