Panic exploded in my chest as I struggled, but it was useless.
They were too strong. Within seconds, I was shoved into the backseat of a car. The door slammed shut. Darkness swallowed me whole. “Who…are you?” My voice cracked into a whisper, pulse quickening, cold sweat forming on my forehead. “Wh…what do you want?” I stuttered. “Us?” The one holding a pistol stepped forward and asked just one question, “can't you tell? Of course, I could tell… I could see danger lurking around me. But who are these people? Are they robbers? “I…I… Please… please don't hurt me. I'll give you anything. Is it money you want? I'll give you money,” I said, my voice shaky. “Money?” He scoffed, turning to glance at the others, and as he turned to me, a hot slap landed on my cheeks. My knees cracked against the tiled floor, a sharp wince tearing through my throat. Fear gripped me. They weren't here to rob… They came for me. I scrambled back, body trembling as he approached me, but he didn't stop until my back pressed against the seatback. He squatted before me, tracing the pistol down my cheek, brushing it against my lips, and stopped right in my neck. My breath hitched. “Please… please don't hurt me…” I begged, my voice shaky, lips quivering, tears blurring my vision. Then a phone rang, and one of them stepped forward to meet the one crouching before me, “boss, she's calling,” She? He took the phone and answered the call, but the voice that echoed on the other end made me stiff. “Hey, sister,” That was unmistakably Eleanor's voice. My chest tightened. I couldn't breathe. “E…Eleanor?” My voice cracked, shocked. “You got the surprise I prepared for you…” she laughed softly, “tell me, do you like it?” My chest burned with anger. I always knew she was up to no good, but she crossed the line this time. “Why, El?” My voice broke. “I already gave you Daniel!” “Of course, you did. Not that you had a choice anyway… Well, let's just say that I'm protecting what's mine,” My lips parted, but no words came out. Protecting what's hers, she said? “You didn't expect me to let you off knowing that you're carrying a child for my man, right?” I stilled. My pulse quickened. She knew about my baby? My hand trembled as I lifted it to my stomach. “H…how—” “How did I find out? Oh, come on, Emma. Nothing is hidden to me. It takes just a snap of fingers, and I'll get everything I want,” I swallowed hard. I wanted to cuss her out, but I knew that wasn't smart enough. I need to do something. I can't let her kill my child and me.“You can’t do this…” My voice shook uncontrollably. “We can talk… we can fix this…”
Silence.
“El… please…”
I swallowed hard, forcing the words out.
“You can have Daniel. I swear. I won’t go back to him. I won’t tell him about the baby. I’ll disappear… I’ll go somewhere far away… you’ll never see me again…”
My voice cracked completely.
“Please… just let me live…”
For a moment—
There was hope.
Then—
“Make sure she leaves no trace.”
Beep.
Everything shattered.
I knew then that my fate had been sealed. They won't spare me or my baby.
He stood, towering over me as he pointed the gun at me. “Please, listen to me… You can't do this… This is a crime… You're going to be charged with murder, and you'll spend the rest of your life in…” My voice faded into a gasp as the second one stepped forward and plunged a knife right into my stomach without warning. My hands found their way to his shoulders, nails digging into his skin as he twisted the knife inside me. He pulled out the knife, and in half a second, plunged it into the same place again, this time, deeper. The first one pointed the gun at me and said, “charged with murder? Spending the rest of my life in jail? You wish,” Those were the last words I heard before a bullet flew straight from the barrel, piercing through my stomach. Everything went quiet. My hand pressed desperately against my stomach.
Not me.
My baby.
Please…
My fingers trembled as I fumbled for my phone.
Daniel.
He would come.
He had to.
Even if everything was broken… even if he chose her…
He wouldn’t let me die.
Right?
The call rang.
Once.
Twice.
Finally, he picked up, "You know I'm busy, Emma. What do you want now?" Daniel's voice was cold and dismissive.
“Da…niel…” My voice barely existed. “Please… help… I’m…”
Dying.
"What? What are you talking about, Emma?"
“I—I’m hurt… I—”
“Are you doing this again?” he cut in sharply. “Trying to stop the wedding?”
Something inside me froze.
“Daniel…” I begged, my voice shaking apart. “Please…”
Just this once.
Believe me.
Choose me.
Please…
A short, annoyed exhale came from the other end.
“We’ll talk when I get back.”
The line went dead.
My chest tightened... so hard, I couldn't breathe.
The last thread of hope inside me… snapped. My hand pressed against the wound. I barely felt any pain there. It has become numb... I knew then that it was over. This was the end. Everyone treated me badly... None of them ever cared about me, but the first people who did this to me was my birth parents. Had they not abandoned me in the orphanage, this wouldn't have happened. And Daniel... I should never have loved him. I should never have agreed to the engagement. If there's a life after this one, I promise to make all of them pay for how they treated me... Mom... dad... Daniel... and Eleanor... All of them. My vision swam, the ceiling above me spinning wildly. The pain was unbearable at first—burning, tearing through my body—until even that began to fade. My fingers trembled as they pressed weakly against my stomach. Warmth soaked my hands. My baby… My chest tightened violently, each breath harder than the last. Air burned in my lungs, refusing to stay. So this is how it ends, I thought hazily. My eyelids grew unbearably heavy. I’m sorry… With that final thought, I slowly closed my eyes. Everything went dark. ****** When I opened my eyes again, there was no pain.No blood.
No weight.
“What…?”
My breath caught as I looked down.
My body lay on the ground.
Broken.
Motionless.
Soaked in blood.
That was me.
A strangled sound tore from my throat as my knees gave out.“No… no…”
My knees buckled.
“I’m… dead?”
I reached out instinctively—
My hand passed straight through.
Cold terror wrapped tightly around me.
I was dead, but my soul seemed to still be there.
Then—
BANG!
The door was kicked open.
Heavy footsteps followed—fast, decisive, filled with authority.
“Emma!”
A deep, commanding voice cut through the air.
Who is that?
My eyes flicked to the direction and I saw Mr. Cole. Daniel's uncle.
He stood there like a storm.
Tall. Imposing.
His sharp gaze swept the room—and froze the moment it landed on my body.
For a split second—
Even he stilled.
“Call an ambulance. Now!” His voice dropped, cold and lethal.
I frowned.
Why does he care about me so much?
Chapter 81EMMA POV “Put me down… Someone might see us,” I said nervously, but deep down, I didn't want him to. I enjoyed my ear on his chest, listening to every beating of his heart."I told you to comply tonight…" he paused, looking down at me. “You don't want us to make a negative headline by tomorrow, trust me," I melted in his arms.I stared up at his chin as he continued walking. His jawline had grown sharper, or maybe it was my eyes. The sound of a creaking door snapped me back to reality, only to realize that we were already inside a room… not just any room, but a bedroom.I blinked, confused."What's this place?”He carefully sat me up on the bed, then crouched down in front of me."The host used to be my friend. He won't mind us using this room,” he said without looking at me.My breath caught in my throat."Use the room?” I said, my voice barely above a whisper, but he heard me anyway. He looked up at me, a smirk curling his lips. “Hmm… Use this room," Heat climbed up my
Chapter 80EMMA POV My grip tightened on my purse, my heart pulsing in my ears as I sat beside Cole in the backseat. His words still echoed in my head, curiosity and anxiousness brewing inside me, wondering what he was up to.The car came to a stop, snapping me back to reality. We've arrived at the villa.I reached for the door in a bid to open it, but Cole held my hand, his eyes meeting mine.“Tonight, let's make this real," he leaned in and whispered. My breath caught, eyes locked on him as he stepped out of the car and came to open the door for me.He held out his hand to me, a warm smile playing on his face.I hesitated, but took his hand and allowed him to guide me out of the car.I stood rigid beside him as his hand rested on my lower back. Heat flushed through my skin, clinging up my throat to my cheeks."Don't make this awkward,” he smirked before positioning his hand in a bow, and I slid my arm inside. We walked side by side into the building. The hall went quiet the moment
Chapter 79Next dayEMMA POV Cole picked me up after work for dress fitting. He drove to one of the most popular boutiques in town that sells high-end dresses.A young lady in her twenties welcomed us with a smile.“We're attending a corporate dinner party. I need you to style my wife beautifully," Cole's arm slid around my waist, gently pulling me close. My breath caught."Alright, sir. Trust me to do a good job,” The lady came to stand behind me, placing her hands on my shoulders before gently leading me away.“We'll be right back, Sir," she said to Cole before leading me away. She led me into the fitting room, then left and came back minutes later with a rack of clothes."These are the best dresses we have at the moment. Chapter 78EMMA POV ‘There’s nothing to apologize about, Emma. We're both using each other’My breath caught in my throat as his voice echoed in my head again. It shouldn't hurt because he only said the truth, but I couldn't help the sting I felt in my chest each time I recalled that moment.Does he really feel nothing for me?I glanced at Cole as he sat across from me at the dining room. His gaze was fixed on his phone as he slowly scrolled through it. He barely touched his food.I sighed silently.“Are you okay?" He asked, his eyes still glued to his phone."You don't look fine,” he finally lifted his gaze to me, his eyes finding mine. Our eyes locked for a moment, and I saw genuine concern in them.I forced a smile and nodded. "Hmm. I'm fine,”This was a contract after all. I shouldn't feel hurt because he reminded me about it.His eyes lingered on me quietly for a moment. He didn't believe me, but he also didn't press harder.Silence thickened in the atmosphere, my eyes on him as
Chapter 77 COLE HART “The responses came out positive, Mr. Hart. We finally got the Montgomery contract, and Mr. Louie looks like he's going to change his mind about the contract," Marcus said with excitement. “Announcing your marriage was really a smart thing to do," he added. “We've also gotten many deals worth millions after the press conference…” Marcus concluded, but the whole time, I was just staring out of the window without saying a word. I was barely listening to what he was saying. “Boss? Are you okay?" I finally looked back at him over my shoulder, and nodded slightly. "You're not fine…” Our eyes locked for a moment, and I sighed before going to sit on my chair. “Do you want to talk about it? You know you could always talk to me," I kept quiet. "Ms. Emma…" he said, and I lifted my gaze to him. “Is this about her?" My eyes lingered on him quietly. Is it that obvious? "Are you in love with her?” He asked, and my breath caught, my fingers slowly tightening in
Chapter 76 EMMA POV The news and pictures have been brought down, and we've announced our marriage in the press conference. We never talked about wedding, but since one of the interviewers asked when our official wedding would be, I had to quickly choose a date, and it's set to take place in two months. Daniel has been blowing up my phone since the press conference was released, but I didn't answer his calls nor reply to his texts. I sat on the bed and slowly scrolled through the internet. The topic about us was still the top trending topic. Not even a single person spoke about the pictures that were released. “Cole! Cole!" I lifted my gaze, tilting my ear to listen to the voice coming from outside. Someone was outside, screaming Cole’s name. I stood up and walked to the window to have a look, but paused when I saw Daniel. He was standing outside the gate, banging hard on it. What the fuck does he want? Why is he here? I tightened my jaw, my chest burning with anger as I da
Emma Whitcomb “What part of I'm no longer interested in this engagement do you not understand?” Daniel's face drained of colors, his lips parted, but no words came out. As Daniel stood there speechless, mom stepped forward, “what is wrong with you, Emma? What the hell has come over you?!”
One week later Emma Whitcomb FIFTY MILLION DOLLARS. My eyes almost widened when I saw the alert on my phone. My eyes flicked to the young man sitting across from me, and back to my phone. After I replied to their email last week, they reached out again, asking to meet. I showed them a fe
Emma Whitcomb “You're crying,” My hand flew to my face, and I quickly wiped my tears with a light chuckle, “oh… sorry about that…” I paused, my eyes flicking back to the painting briefly, and as I turned back to face him, a small smile stretched round my lips, “the painting was too beautiful
Emma Whitcomb ‘Be ready by 9am. My assistant is picking you up’ That was the only text Cole sent to me after two weeks… not even a hi. My eyes lingered on the text for a moment, then I clicked on his profile. His account was private, and verified with six hundred thousand followers. Wow! How
