Chapter 2

作者: Maizie
The next evening, I returned to my stone hut with my broken necklace, only to find a crowd gathered at my door.

In the center of the crowd, Ingrid was seated on the ground, clutching her calf while sobbing quietly.

There was a shallow wound on her calf that was oozing black blood. Meanwhile, Darius was down on one knee next to her, his face as dark as thunder.

"It's not Talia's fault, Alpha," Ingrid said, her tears suddenly streaming even more fiercely down her face as she looked up at me. "I should have been more careful. I shouldn't have come to find her today. I just wanted to apologize."

Darius looked up, his furious gaze landing on me.

"Ingrid purposely came here looking for you, but she tripped on the rocks outside your place that had been smothered in wolfsbane poison! She cut herself because of that!"

I looked back straight into his eyes.

"I never saw her. I only just came back from the back of the mountains."

When Darius heard me talk back, he grew even more furious with me. "So? Are you saying that Ingrid is a liar?"

I didn't answer him this time.

Ingrid spoke up in an aggrieved tone just then.

"It's not Talia's fault, Darius. I must've been too clumsy and didn't see where I was going, and those rocks in front of Talia's place… I never should have come here in the first place."

Darius firmly shielded her behind him, his icy gaze piercing into me.

"Do you know what the punishment is for werewolves who harm other pack members on purpose? Do you?"

Of course I did.

They would be exiled from the pack.

However, I never did anything to her.

"I did not harm her, Alpha."

"Then how do you explain the wound on her leg?" Darius demanded, his voice loud and clear. "You know very well that our mating ceremony is in just three days! Ingrid only thought of making amends with you this time and inviting you to the ceremony! How could you be so cruel and vicious to her?"

I looked at Ingrid.

She kept her head hung low, her shoulders trembling. But I saw her lightly clenching the hem of her dress with her fingers.

That gesture was all too familiar for me.

In my past life, she would always subconsciously do this every time she successfully framed me for something.

I averted my gaze and stressed again, saying, "I did not harm her, Alpha."

Darius flung a rock onto the ground in a burst of fury, smashing it into pieces.

"This is the last time I'm asking you, Talia Whiteclaw! Did you or did you not plant the wolfsbane poison here?"

I looked up, meeting his eyes.

Everything that happened in my past life seemed to immediately play out in my mind in quick succession—how he'd held a bowl of wolfsbane poison while I lay sprawled on the ground, heavily pregnant.

He had said, "Ingrid will never feel peace as long as you're alive."

Then, he'd forced me to swallow every drop of the poison.

I snapped back to the present.

"I was not the one who put it there," I said softly but determinedly.

Darius narrowed his eyes at me.

"Fine."

He nodded and said, "From today onward, you will be locked up in Silvermist Prison for three days, and you will not be allowed out until I say so."

Everyone around us burst into low murmurs.

Getting locked up in Silvermist Prison was the cruelest and most frightening punishment in the entire pack.

The entrance to the prison was sealed off with a large boulder, and there was no food, no water, and no light inside—only the frigid cold and the chilling, silvery mist.

The longest time someone was imprisoned there was seven days, and the werewolf had gone insane by the time he was let back out again.

Ingrid looked up at him with red-rimmed eyes.

"Alpha! Please don't do this to Talia! I don't blame her for it. She's just jealous because we're about to hold our mating ceremony soon."

Darius bent down and gently wiped her tears away. "You're just too gentle and kind for your own good."

Then, he straightened himself and looked at me with pure disgust.

"Take her away."

Two pack members immediately approached me and grabbed me by my arms.

I stared at Darius incredulously.

He knew that I was the most afraid of the dark. Grandma had passed away on a pitch-black night, and ever since then, I could never be anywhere without a source of light. I even kept the lights on when I went to sleep at night.

But now, Darius was locking me up in solitary confinement in the prison as "punishment" over such a small matter that I wasn't even responsible for.

As I was dragged past Ingrid, she looked up at me for a second, and I could see the smug, victorious look in her eyes.

Silvermist Prison was located at the bottom of a canyon.

The massive boulder at the entrance was rolled slightly to the side to reveal a tiny opening. Then, I was roughly shoved inside, followed by a loud, muffled thud behind me.

Darkness instantly engulfed me.

I groped my way against the rock wall. It was as cold as ice, and I could feel the silvery mist seeping into my very being, my heart, and my soul.

It was cold.

Freezing.

I closed my eyes and clutched the deformed pendant in my hands, holding it to my chest.

"Just a while more, Grandma."

I'd finally be able to leave the pack as soon as I got out of here.

Darius rushed forward, trying to grab my hand.Just then, another hand reached out from the side and firmly held me by my shoulder.Cassius then appeared next to me, his eyes filled with a cold warning."This is Solaris Pack, Alpha Darius. It's not a place for you to act ruthlessly and do as you please."Darius glared at Cassius' arm on my shoulders, his eyes turning bloodshot. "She belongs to me!""She does not belong to you," Cassius said calmly. "Talia is my betrothed and the future Luna of Solaris Pack. From the moment she stepped into the place, she no longer had anything to do with your Silvermoon Pack anymore."Darius' face twisted and contorted in anger."Talia! You can't do this to me! I was wrong, I know I was wrong, and I regret it now! I'll do anything for you to come back with me!"I looked at him and suddenly began to laugh."Darius, have you ever thought why I'd ever want to go back with you?"He froze at once."Here, I have a warm bed, a sunny room, pack me

I was stunned for a moment. Then, I slowly lowered my head.We just sat there like that, watching the sun slowly sink below the horizon and paint the entire sky a beautiful orange-red glow.At that moment, I felt something quietly stir in my heart.A few days later, Cassius took me to the pack's Bonfire Festival. The werewolves in Solaris Pack were all very warm and welcoming, curiously asking me questions instead of rejecting me just because I was an outsider to them.A young she-wolf who introduced herself to me as Leah Fangson grabbed my hand eagerly and began chattering away about the interesting stories and anecdotes that had happened in the pack.Cassius sat down opposite the bonfire, watching me through the flames. I could feel his scorching gaze on me and immediately looked up.He then raised his glass in my direction with a tender smile on his lips.I realized that my face was also getting heated up for some reason.Leah immediately leaned closer to me and said in a l

Talia's POVThe Solaris Pack territory was separated from the Silvermoon Pack territory by three mountains, two rivers, and a snowfield that stayed frozen all year-round.I followed the envoy for seven whole days before finally catching sight of their pack territory."Talia."A deep voice rang out just then, making me look in the direction of it. I saw a tall figure standing at the entrance to the pack's territory. He had a black cloak around his broad shoulders, and he also had a shapely figure and deep-set features on his face. The most striking thing about him was his eyes. They were a rare, striking amber that gleamed warmly in the sunlight. This was Cassius Fenwick, the Alpha of Solaris Pack.I went up to him and bowed slightly to him as a formality. "Greetings, Alpha," I greeted. He offered his hand to me in a gesture of support, a faint smile playing on his lips."There's no need for formalities between us. You must be tired from your journey. Please come with me."Hi

Ingrid's expression froze for a second. It was just a fleeting moment that should have gone unnoticed, but Darius caught the glint of smugness in her eyes.Ingrid then covered her mouth as her eyes turned red with tears."What? Talia went for a marriage alliance? How could that be? Was it all because of me? Do you think it was because she was still mad at me?"Tears began to fall as she spoke.Darius just watched as Ingrid cried. In the past, he used to find her crying heartbreaking. But now, he only felt exhausted."Stop crying," he said, his voice turning cold.Ingrid was startled. She froze slightly and immediately stopped sobbing. Instead, she looked up at him incredulously."Alpha? You—"Darius stared into her eyes as he asked, "Were you really planning on apologizing to her when you went looking for her the other day?"Ingrid's face fell. Her voice trembled as she replied, "Y-yes, of course! Alpha, don't you believe me? You'd rather believe her instead?"Darius didn't

Darius stood by the window all night long.He finally came to a decision as dawn approached.Mordecai had only just opened the door when he suddenly caught sight of Darius standing there.Darius' eyes were dark, and he looked absolutely worse for wear, like he hadn't slept in days.Mordecai sighed. "What are you doing here again?""Where is Talia?" Darius' voice was deep and hoarse.Mordecai looked at him silently for a long time. Eventually, he said, "Talia has gone to Solaris Pack for a marriage alliance. It was her own choice, and the Elders all approved of it. The messengers from Solaris Pack already picked her up five days ago."His words were like dull knives stabbing right through Darius' heart. He mumbled, "That's impossible! How could she…"Mordecai countered, "Why couldn't she? She'd been chasing after you for more than ten years, Darius, but have you even properly looked at her before?"What were you doing when she was locked up in Silvermist Prison at your orders?

Third-Person POVAfter the clamor of the mating ceremony was over, Silvermoon Pack soon returned to its usual silence once more.Darius remained on the altar, watching the last of his pack members leave. His gaze inadvertently swept over the edge of the crowd, but he found it empty. That slender figure was nowhere to be seen.In the past, Talia would always be the one standing in the most inconspicuous corner at festivals and occasions like this, secretly watching him like a spy. He just never responded to her gaze because he found it simply too annoying."Alpha," Ingrid said, her gentle voice snapping him out of his thoughts. She hooked her arm around his and smiled bashfully at him. "Let's go home together."Darius nodded and eventually led her back to their room.He didn't know why, but he suddenly thought about Talia's face and how she'd always smile gently at him. However, he realized that everything had changed since he was reborn.Ingrid sensed Darius spacing out and sh
