Chapter 2

Author: Jasmine Flower
I wasn't shocked. Things had played out exactly the same way in my previous life. Back then, I had screamed at Megan, calling her shameless, a vixen, and a slut who stole someone else's fiance.

Feeling humiliated, she had dashed out of the house in tears and died in a car crash.

"I know you've been preparing for the marking ceremony for a whole year. You've designed the dress yourself and grown the roses, which are to be used for the ceremony, for three years.

"But the healer and the witch both said the joy from the marking ceremony will help her recover much faster," Kenneth explained.

"I know things haven't been great between you and Meg, but I heard from your parents that you already transferred the company to her. That shows how much you care about your sister deep down. This is just a ceremony. You should—"

"Okay," I said softly, cutting him off.

Kenneth looked stunned for a second. Then, he swept me into a tight, excited hug. "Evie, I knew you weren't a selfish person! Don't worry. You're still the one I love the most."

I stared at his thrilled expression as my heart shattered into pieces. His words had sounded like a question, but honestly, he was just giving me a notice.

The fact that the flowers used to decorate the venue for the marking ceremony had already been switched to jasmines—Megan's favorite flowers—told as much. The outcome was obvious.

I had no energy left to speak to him. My strength was draining fast, leaving me dizzy and faint. So, I turned and headed to my room to rest.

"Once Meg fully recovers, I'll dissolve the bond with her and be with you. I'll throw you the grandest marking ceremony then."

I shook my head in silence when I heard Kenneth's promise.

"But I won't live to see that day, Kenneth," I thought.

When I didn't respond, he sighed. "I know you and Meg don't get along, but now that her life is on the line, you should be more understanding. Show her more care and concern.

"You've been really sensible this time. I'm so proud of you. I know I've said a lot of hurtful things during our fights recently, and I'm sorry for that. I promise I'll never make you angry again. I'll be more tolerant and understanding, and I'll shower you with more love!"

I smiled bitterly. How ironic was it that the tolerance and understanding I got from Kenneth came only from giving up the marking ceremony?

A few minutes later, I got a call from Mom. "Evie, I heard you agreed to let Meg have the marking ceremony. I'm so glad you're being so sensible."

Kenneth must have told them already.

Mom sounded relieved. "See, this is much better. Now, our family can all be happy together."

The next second, everything went black, and I collapsed to the floor.

I woke up to cold water being splashed on my face. When I opened my eyes, Kenneth stood over me, his expression icy and indifferent.

"You've used the trick of pretending to faint just to get attention 66 times already, Evelina. Aren't you tired of it yet? Next time, try something new like coughing up blood or something.

"I hope you understand that I love you. Even if I go through with the marking ceremony with Meg, it doesn't mean anything. Don't test my love for you by pretending to be sick."

I pressed my lips together and forced an awkward smile. "I wasn't pretending. It might've been low blood sugar. I've been trying to lose weight and haven't been eating much lately."

I kept the smile on my face even as my heart broke into fragments. I had fainted, and instead of rushing me to the hospital, he woke me up by dumping cold water on me. And this man had the nerve to claim that he loved me. It was laughable. I didn't need this kind of love.

"Low blood sugar? Your cheeks look rosy, and you seem perfectly energetic. How could it be low blood sugar?" Kenneth eyed me skeptically.

"I… I've got makeup on," I said, slowly getting to my feet. It seemed my makeup skills were good enough to make me look almost normal even in the state that I was in.

"Anyway, you're heading to the hospital, right? I'll go with you. I need to bring over some important partnership contracts from the company."

Kenneth looked like he had more to say, but when he heard me mention the company documents, he held his tongue.

Dropping heavily to her knees in front of him, she begged, "I really love you, Ken. Please help me!"Kenneth, seated in his swivel chair, looked down at her. His gaze was icy, a mocking smile playing on his lips. "Fine. I'll take you away."A spark of ecstatic relief lit up Megan's eyes. She thought she had finally found a lifeline. So, when Kenneth brought her to a mansion in a deserted area, Megan followed him inside readily, full of anticipation. Unexpectedly, what awaited her was a pitch-black, windowless cellar.Kenneth shoved her into the cold, damp space and shut the heavy metal door behind her with a deafening clang. His voice was devoid of warmth as he stated, "From today onward, you're not going anywhere."Megan pounded frant

Mom clutched at Maia's arm like it was her last lifeline, tears streaming down her face as her voice cracked with desperation. "Maia, how exactly did Evie die? Hasn't she always been healthy?"Maia's eyes blazed with disgust, and she roughly shook off Mom's hand. Then, she reached into her bag, pulled out a thick stack of printed chat records, and flung them violently onto the floor in front of them. "See for yourselves!"The sheets of paper scattered in the air, falling like snowflakes.Mom scrambled to pick up several sheets, and as she read, her entire body began to tremble uncontrollably.Kenneth snatched up a few pages as well. The color drained from his face in an instant, and his eyes were filled with shock and fury.Maia pointed at the chat records and said loudly, "This is proof that Megan colluded with your family doctor to forge Evie's medical reports! Megan faked an illness to win your favor while claiming Evie was perfectly healthy, and every single one of you blindl

The previously lively marking ceremony fell into a dead silence.Kenneth's face darkened like a storm cloud, and he raised a hand sharply. "Stop the ceremony!"The guests exchanged uneasy glances. A flicker of panic flashed in Megan's eyes, but she quickly masked it, slipping back into her fragile, pitiful expression.…Back at home, Megan's eyes brimmed with tears, her voice trembling with a sob. "Evie must really be furious with me this time for her to joke about something as serious as her own life."In the past, Mom would have immediately rushed to comfort her. But this time, surprisingly, she didn't respond. Instead, she paced back and forth uneasily. "Evie has never stayed away from home this long. Could something really have happened to her?"As for Kenneth, he kept staring at his phone, at the message thread that I hadn't replied to for days. His expression grew complicated as he muttered under his breath, "Have I neglected her too much lately? Is that why she's throwing

Maia held up my phone to show me the message from Kenneth. It read, "Evie, the marking ceremony is in ten days. There's no time to get a new gown made, so let Meg wear the one you prepared. Oh, and remember the set of matching sapphire jewelry, too. Don't forget to bring that."The words on the screen seem to cut like a sharp blade, making my eyes sting.I lay on the hospital bed, my thin, frail fingers brushing weakly over the screen as a faint, bitter smile touched my lips."Hang in there, Evelina!" Maia's cries echoed in my ears, sounding as if they came from somewhere far, far away.I tried to force my eyes open, to tell her not to cry, but my eyelids felt weighed down by an impossible weight, impossible to lift no matter how hard I tried. The pain in my body grew distant and numb as death drew near. I felt as if I were floating in an endless void—just vast emptiness with nothing and no one around. My final thought cut through the darkness, clear and unyielding. If there was

I left the hospital with a bitter smile. Tears had slipped down my face the moment I turned away.As I was left with my final 24 hours, I decided to go to the amusement park. It was the place that held my happiest memories. But as soon as I reached the entrance, a wave of dizziness crashed over me.…When I woke up again, it was already the next day.Beside the hospital bed, Maia Snowpaw sat with red, swollen eyes. Maia was my childhood best friend, and we'd grown up together. From the very day Megan entered our family, Maia had warned me she didn't trust her. She had told me that I should keep my distance, but I hadn't listened, and we even had arguments over that. Our worst argument ended with her leaving to study abroad. After that, we never spoke again, and I never thought I would see her again."Evelina! Didn't you email me saying you'd found the person you wanted to spend your life with? That you were about to hold your marking ceremony? Why are you in such a sickly stat

At the hospital, Megan warmly took my hand as soon as she saw me. "Evie, thank you so much for giving me the company. I promise that the company's assets will double within a year under my management! Then, you can just sit back and wait for the dividends!"She pretended to be affectionate, but from an angle where no one else could see, her eyes glinted with cold mockery, silently declaring her victory."Yes, with Meg managing it, you can just relax and wait for the money. If you've got nothing better to do, then just go travel. Go on vacations, you know? You and Kenneth should hurry up and have a baby, too," Mom said, holding mine and Megan's hand in each of hers, looking emotional."You sisters should have been this united ages ago. It's all your fault, Evelina. As the older one, you never knew how to give in to your younger sister. From now on, you mustn't bully her anymore.""Yes, it was all my fault in the past. To make up for it, I plan to hand over all my investment accounts
