Chapter 2

Author: Anima
After I died in my previous life, I didn't immediately get reborn. Instead, I drifted in the air for a long time.

That was when I learned that during the days when I was running and hiding from debt collectors, it was Cathy who had secretly taken care of my parents.

After I died, the debt collectors tracked down my parents' home, and it was also Cathy who rushed forward without hesitation and took a knife meant for them.

When my parents fainted from the shock and grief of my sudden death, she brought them to live with her and cared for them as if they were her own parents.

How could someone like that possibly turn against me over a man?

I ignored those strange voices and threw my arms around Cathy, nodding over and over.

"You're right, Cat. There must be something wrong with him. Thank goodness I've ended things with him completely."

As I spoke, I hurriedly turned on my phone. Without even glancing at the flood of messages, I blocked every single one of Brian's contacts.

The memories of constantly running and hiding from debt collectors in my previous life were still fresh in my mind.

This time around, I wasn't going to misjudge someone again and hurt the people who truly cared about me.

But what I didn't expect was that even after I blocked Brian, he still refused to give up and came looking for me.

"Bree, I'm sorry. What happened last night was just a misunderstanding. I accidentally grabbed the wrong bag. Look—this is the actual purse I bought for you.

"To make up for my mistake yesterday, I also bought you this necklace. It's the one you've always wanted. Can you forgive me, please? I promise something like that will never happen again."

When I ignored him completely, he grabbed my hand and pleaded earnestly for my forgiveness. When I still refused to acknowledge him, he started showing up outside my place with a new gift every day. He said he'd wait until I changed my mind.

I merely sneered but didn't stop him. That was because I knew the truth about his debts would come out soon.

Once the debt collectors came for him, he'd be too busy hiding to come bother me again.

Meanwhile, I'd already found a new place, and I'd be moving out soon. Then I'd finally have nothing to do with him in this life.

I had everything planned out. I had calculated the exact day the debt collectors would come for him and was ready to move that day.

However, on that very day, Brian showed up again—right on time. Seeing him standing there with a bouquet of flowers, just like always, I froze.

"Why are you still here?"

I remembered it very clearly.

In my previous life, today had been the third day after I had married Brian, and we were about to go back to my parents' house.

But before we could step out the door, we were stopped by the debt collectors. They brandished knives and threatened to chop off our fingers if we didn't pay up.

Only then did I learn that Brian wasn't some billionaire at all—he was merely a gambler drowning in debt.

From that moment on, my life became an endless cycle of running and hiding from those debt collectors.

So why, in this life, was he still standing here perfectly fine?

But what came next shocked me even more.

When Brian heard me speak to him, he didn't flash his usual smile as he had before or plead with me to forgive him. Instead, he just shot me a cold, indifferent glance.

"Don't worry. It has nothing to do with you. I'm just here to help Cat move."

Cat?

I followed his gaze and looked behind me, just in time to see Brian step forward to take the suitcase from Cathy.

She didn't stop him, either. She handed it over like it was the most natural thing in the world.

"Cat, what are you doing?"

I stared at her in shock. The stuff I was holding slipped from my hands and scattered across the ground. But my best friend, who had just been chatting excitedly with me about our new life after the move, suddenly turned cold.

"Since you've found out already, I won't pretend anymore, Bridget. I'm with Brian now. And I should thank you for willingly stepping aside.

"Otherwise, where would I ever find such a good man?"

Her words pierced straight into my heart like a blade.

Those terrifying inner voices rang in my ears again. So those thoughts had been real all along. Cathy had truly wanted to marry Brian this whole time. She really couldn't stand to see me happy.

But if so, why had she taken such good care of my parents in my previous life? And why hadn't the debt collectors shown up this time?

Wesley chuckled lightly, effortlessly washing his hands of the whole situation."You—"My eyes burned with anger, but I couldn't even find the words to argue back.He had the audacity to let Brian impersonate him, precisely because he was absolutely certain that, on the surface, he had never directly participated in this so-called game. The only thing remotely connecting him to this scheme made him look like a victim, not the true mastermind pulling the strings behind the scenes. But… had he really left no loose ends?I smiled and raised my phone. From the speaker came a recording of Wesley threatening the station's executives. He had overlooked the most crucial detail—the milk bottle had his fingerprints on it.The moment he realized the truth, he exploded with fury."What? You dare set me up? You're nothing more than a toy I use for entertainment. How dare you try to scheme against me?"He looked like he had completely lost it."Does that mean you're admitting it?"I smil

As I spoke, I pulled a medical report from my bag."I've already gone to the hospital for a full examination. It confirms that my memory has been tampered with. And do you know how I figured all this out?"I reached into my bag and took out a bottle—a milk bottle. Maybe they hadn't wanted the hallucinogens to go to waste, so they used milk to make sure I would drink every drop.Back then, when I was hiding from those debt collectors, that bottle of milk had been the best thing I had managed to find. Because of that, I savored every last drop, then kept the bottle as a memento. But later, in "this lifetime", when I went to my hiding spot to look for the bottle, I actually found it. That proved that I hadn't been reborn, and this wasn't a second go at life.On top of that, I sent the bottle for testing. Sure enough, it contained drug residue.Only then did I finally understand that everything I had seen was nothing but a massive plot aimed at me. All the people around me were actor

A stranger got out of the car."Wesley Eggert?" I asked. The man seemed momentarily surprised when he heard me call his name."I didn't expect you to be this sharp, Ms. Dewan."I scoffed coldly. "I wouldn't call it sharp. I'm just trying to protect the people I want to protect. What brings you here now, Mr. Eggert?"Hearing my words, Wesley seemed even more interested in me, and he took a few steps closer."Why don't you start by telling me what you know, Ms. Dewan?"I paused for a moment, then decided to speak, because I knew that if I didn't, some of my questions would never be answered. Besides, I was going to explain things to Cathy anyway, so I might as well say it here."Stop hiding. Come out," I called toward the car in front of me.Wesley glanced at me in surprise before shooting a signal to the side with his eyes.Soon, two people stepped out of the car.One of them was Brian Eggert, and the other was a woman who looked exactly like Cathy."Who is she?" Cathy gaspe

Cathy's inner voice quickly gave me the answer."I knew something was off when Brian specially reserved a lounge. So it was for this bitch. Good thing I came to check. I'll find a way to lock her in here later so she can't ruin the ceremony."Sure enough, Cathy soon found an excuse to leave. And just as expected, the door to the lounge was locked from the outside.I glanced down at the phone beside me. Had Cathy forgotten it in her hurry… or had she intentionally left me a way to call for help?Either way, I didn't choose to text Brian and instead tossed the phone aside. I knew it didn't matter whether I contacted him or not. When the time came, someone would rescue me anyway.I waited leisurely in the lounge for nearly two hours before someone finally opened the door.Brian's assistant rushed in."Ms. Dewan! So this is where you were!" he said anxiously. "Mr. Eggert has been looking everywhere for you. You didn't reply to your messages, and when he called you, your phone was of

In the restaurant, I looked straight into Brian's eyes and slowly took a sip of my red wine."Do you really only want to be friends with me, Mr. Eggert?" I asked. It seemed Cathy's inner thoughts hadn't been wrong. The way Brian looked at me still carried the unmistakable tenderness reserved for a lover.Brian sat there hesitating for a long time before finally working up the courage to meet my eyes."Bree… I regret it. I admit that after leaving you, I realized that the person I love most is still you," he said with earnest sincerity. "I didn't get together with Cathy because I'd found true love—it was just to make you mad, make you jealous. I wanted you to come looking for me. But it seems like I've only pushed you farther and farther away."I raised an eyebrow. I'd expected him to beat around the bush for a while longer. Who knew he'd be this blunt?"Sure. Then dump Cathy, and we can get back together," I answered just as directly."You… You're on board?"Brian's expression

Over the next few days, things remained surprisingly peaceful.Cathy had already moved out, and Brian stopped bothering me. It was as if the two of them had completely disappeared from my life. That was until about two weeks later, when my boss called me into his office the moment I arrived at work.He said the previous interview with Wesley had performed really well, and the Eggert family wanted to do a more in-depth interview. They even specifically requested that I be the one to conduct it.Hearing this, the corners of my lips curled slightly.Sure enough, they were back. And they were even more impatient than I'd imagined.I quickly agreed to the interview. I even suggested inviting Cathy, his fiancee, to join us as well, as it would add some extra buzz to the program.…On the day of the interview, Brian and Cathy arrived as scheduled."Bree, I didn't expect you to invite me," she said. She had dropped the cold attitude she'd shown the last two times. There was even a fa
