Chapter 2

Author: Protector of Love
Before I had realized it, Queenie was already standing in front of me. Holding her champagne glass in one hand, she silently judged my simple attire before her lips curved up into a subtle smirk.

"Well, this is unexpected."

She wasn't being very loud, but the people around us managed to hear her anyway.

"How did you manage to get into such an upscale event?" she spat.

Before I could respond, a man in gold glasses laughed. "Who is this man, Ms. Lloyd?"

Queenie gently swirled her champagne and announced coolly, "This is James Lawrence—my ex-husband."

Upon hearing the words "ex-husband", the entire group fell silent. Then, some of them began eyeing me up and down.

"Oh! Is he the man who used up his life's savings to hold his wedding?" the man in gold glasses exclaimed in realization.

Then, he dragged out his words and continued, "Judging by your attire and the fact that we've never met, I think it's safe to assume that your career is mediocre at best."

"You kind of look like Mr. Manson, though," a middle-aged man in a blue suit chimed in.

"No, he doesn't. He hardly measures up to Mr. Manson. You're giving him far too much credit."

I hadn't even opened my mouth when a young woman chuckled. "What a horrible thing to say, Mr. Wayne. Look at how embarrassed Mr. Lawrence is. For all we know, he could just be a stand-in Ms. Lloyd had picked up during one of her little spats. You shouldn't have said that."

"I was just calling it like I saw it," the man replied.

Subsequently, he walked over and patted my shoulder. "So what if you were a temporary stand-in for Mr. Manson? I think you ought to be grateful for the experience."

Upon hearing this, the rest of the group burst into laughter as well.

Queenie took a sip of her champagne. She didn't take part in ridiculing me, but she made no effort to stop everyone else from doing so either. Instead, she just quietly watched me with a triumphant and derisive look on her face.

Emboldened by what he saw, the man in gold glasses grew even more brazen.

"The way I see it, Mr. Lawrence shouldn't have come here at all. Look at Queenie's current social status! Don't you think you've made a fool of yourself by coming here?" he mocked.

"That's a bit harsh, Mr. Smith," said the man in the blue suit. "But since Mr. Lawrence is already here, he might as well get a drink before he leaves. But I'll have to say, the drinks here might be a bit more extravagant compared to what you usually enjoy."

Once some of them let out stifled laughs, Queenie finally decided to speak.

"Cut it out, everyone. Mr. Lawrence was a stand-in, but that's all in the past now," she said. "Our relationship was just a fling. There's no need to pay any attention to it."

She looked at me emotionlessly and continued, "If you're here to congratulate me, I'll accept your good wishes. However, if you have other intentions…"

She paused. Everyone around her was waiting for her to finish her sentence.

"We're no longer the people we were eight years ago. You should've moved on by now," she said. "Dressing up as a waiter to approach me won't convince me to get back together with you."

Her remarks made everyone cackle. The people who were once friendly and supportive at our wedding were now standing alongside her. Every single one of them was staring at me with pity and disdain.

I stayed silent until they had finished talking. While they eagerly waited for me to become flustered, I nodded and asked calmly, "Are you done?"

Then, I glanced at all of them before finally turning to look at Queenie. "Can I go now, Ms. Lloyd?"

I leaned close to Queenie's ear and spoke in a low and threatening voice. Meanwhile, the security personnel had already untied Suzanne and Samuel. Once they had been freed, Suzanne instantly embraced our son. The two of them were still trembling in fear. "Honey…" Suzanne looked at me with a trusting gaze and called out. "It's okay. Everything's alright now," I gently comforted them as I held Queenie in place. "Just take Sam with you and head to the car. I can deal with this myself."She nodded. Then, she swiftly walked away under the escort of security personnel. After I made sure they left, I released Queenie and shoved her toward the security officers next to me. "Keep an eye on her," I instructed.Queenie's hair was a mess, and her clothes were wrinkled. Her face was also covered in dirt and grime. She no longer looked like the wealthy businesswoman she once was.She raised her head to look at me. Her expression was bleak and empty as she cried, "How could you do this t

That day, I hired bodyguards to keep Suzanne and Samuel safe. One day, while I was on a business trip, I received a photo from an unknown number. In the photo, Suzanne and Samuel were sitting in a room I didn't recognize. Suzanne was holding Samuel tightly. Her face was pale, and her expression looked frightened.I felt my blood run cold. I couldn't believe what Queenie had done.I was angry and afraid, but I forced myself to calm down. I immediately contacted the police. Then, I cleared up my schedule and rushed back. The textile factory was empty and tattered, and the inside of the building reeked of dust and rusted metal. I followed Queenie's instructions and headed upstairs to the second floor. Then, I spotted my family immediately.Suzanne and Samuel were each tied to a chair. Their mouths were gagged, and Samuel's face was covered in tear streaks. Once Suzanne saw me, she frantically shook her head and let out muffled cries.Queenie was standing beside them, and she was a

It was a regular afternoon, and I had returned to my office to handle some work affairs. All of a sudden, Queenie walked into my office. She was dressed in plain and modest clothes. Her outfit made her look like a weak and powerless woman; she looked nothing like the aggressive and domineering businesswoman she had been before. "James…" she croaked as she shut the door behind her. "I miss you so much.""This is inappropriate, Ms. Lloyd," I said coolly once I took a seat at my desk. "Please leave my office."She hastily stepped forward and placed her hands on my desk. "I know I've made a mistake," she said as her eyes welled up with tears. "I wasn't thinking clearly. I shouldn't have treated you like a replacement. I never should have divorced you either…"I stared at her emotionlessly. I was unfazed by her comments."I've forgotten about our past a long time ago," I replied."You've forgotten about our past? I don't believe you!" she screamed. She shook her head and started

At 9:00 pm, Queenie received a message from her assistant. In the photo she just received, Liam and a young woman were kissing in the corner of a high-end restaurant. The picture was taken ten minutes ago.Queenie couldn't believe her eyes. She didn't think that Liam would have the nerve to cheat on her.She stared at her phone with a blank expression. Then, she grabbed her bag and her car keys before heading out. 20 minutes later, she arrived at the restaurant. She saw Liam and his mistress in a corner booth the minute she arrived. Liam was feeding the woman a dessert with a huge grin on his face. He looked extremely affectionate. Queenie marched over to their table and seated herself across from them. When the pair looked up simultaneously, their expressions stiffened in an instant."Q-Queenie?" Liam exclaimed. His face paled, and he immediately let go of the woman he was holding. "What are you doing here?"The mistress started to panic as well. She instinctively took a ste

Following the industry summit, Queenie shut herself in her office and didn't see anyone for an entire day. She sat at her desk and subconsciously tapped her fingers against the surface of the table. She was repeatedly thinking about what happened the night before. She thought of the child who was a splitting image of me, and the graceful woman who was holding my arm. She also recalled how Richard addressed Suzanne and me as Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence. On top of everything, she was thinking about the way I looked at her as if she were a complete stranger. She suddenly pushed a desk ornament off her desk. The ornament shattered on the floor with a sharp and grating crash.Queenie's chest was heaving, and she became flooded with shame, regret, and bitter resentment. All of a sudden, her secretary, Joanne Larkin, cautiously knocked on the door. Then, Joanne entered the room and provided her with a work update."Our partnership proposal has been rejected by the team at Lawrence Group, Ms.

On the way back home, Samuel was sleeping soundly in his car seat. The night lights glowed around us as our car pulled into the estate. After we got home, I gently tucked Samuel into bed. Subsequently, Suzanne took a shower while I heated up two glasses of milk in the kitchen. Suzanne was in the midst of drying her hair when she suddenly recalled something. "Oh, right. Your mom called this afternoon. She's thinking of taking Sam out to go kayaking in the park this weekend. She wanted to know if we were free," she said."Sure. I don't have anything scheduled for the weekend," I said as I took the towel from her. While I helped her dry her hair, I asked, "Would you like to go?""Of course," she replied with a smile. "Sam has brought it up a couple of times now. Your mom also said she'll pack us some lunch so we can have a picnic at the park."Halfway through our conversation, Samuel suddenly began to fuss. We rushed over to his bedroom and found that he had kicked his blanket of
