Chapter 5

I held Samuel with one arm and wrapped my free arm around Suzanne. We were just about to leave when Queenie's frantic and unyielding voice rang out from behind us.

"James! Wait!"

I continued walking as if I didn't hear her.

"James Lawrence!" Queenie screamed in a raised voice.

At this point, her voice sounded slightly sharp and piercing. After calling out to me, she ran after us and planted herself right in the middle of our path. She was panting, and her hair was slightly disheveled.

"Are you going to leave just like that?" she demanded.

I stared at her and replied emotionlessly, "Do you have something else to say, Ms. Lloyd? I've already offered you my congratulations."

"You—"

She seemed taken aback by the way I addressed her. She eyed Suzanne and me with a complicated expression before finally glancing at Samuel.

"Is he really your son? I think there's been some kind of misunderstanding between us—"

"A misunderstanding?" I cut her off.
