Chapter 117: The Last Dinner

RILEY

The grandfather clock in the dining room chimed at midnight, its deep, resonant tones echoing through the quiet house. I'd been lying in bed since dinner, staring at the ceiling and thinking about everything that had happened today – and everything that was going to happen tomorrow.

Dinner was different tonight. Mr. Xenois had come home just as we were sitting down to eat, which surprised both me and Mommy. He'd been staying away from the house ever since he got out of the hospital, and I'd started to think he might never come back.

But tonight he'd sat across from me at the big dining table, asking me questions about how I was doing, what I'd been playing with, if I was sleeping okay. His attention felt warm and genuine, not like the distracted way he sometimes looked at me when Mommy was around.

"I'm sorry I haven't been here more," he'd said, cutting his food but watching my face carefully. "I know I should have been spending time with you, especi

Can someone arrange that?""I'll get the painkillers," Lynn said, already moving. "But I'm vetoing ice cream until we're sure your stomach can handle it.""Boring," my mother complained. "You're all boring. No sense of adventure."She was insulting people and making demands. Which meant she was going to be fine.I felt something in my chest unclench, tension I hadn't realized I was holding finally releasing."Mom," I said, moving closer. "You scared us. When you collapsed, when you were coughing up blood—""I know," she interrupted, her voice gentler now. "I scared myself too. That explosion technique was probably not our wisest choice. But it worked, so I'm calling it a tactical success despite the medical complications.""You're impossible," I said."I prefer 'determined,'" she corrected. "Impossible is so negative

Chapter 356XENOISOllie clung to his grandfather, sobbing into his shoulder. And my father held him, rocking slightly, making soothing sounds while his own eyes filled with tears he wouldn't let fall."She promised she'd teach me to bake her special cookies," Ollie said between sobs. "She said we'd do it together when things calmed down. She can't die before we make cookies.""She won't," my father promised. "We'll make those cookies together. All three of us. And your grandmother will critique our technique the entire time because that's what she does."Riley and Lake had gravitated to their brother, forming a small cluster of terrified five-year-olds who'd just experienced combat and were now watching their grandmother fight for her life.I wanted to comfort them. Wanted to tell them everything would be okay, that their grandmother would survive, that this would all work out.But I couldn't lie to them. They'd seen too much, experienced too much, to accept empty reassurances. So I

Chapter 355XENOISThe smoke from Jerome's escape was still clearing when I heard my mother's voice cutting through the chaos with her typical running commentary."Well, that was anticlimactic," she said, her voice slightly weaker than before but still carrying that distinctive Silvia Blackwood edge. "All that buildup and he just runs away? Where's the dramatic final confrontation? Where's the—"She coughed. A wet, rattling sound that made every nerve in my body stand on end."Silvia?" my father said, his voice sharp with concern. My mother coughed again, and this time when she pulled her hand away from her mouth, it was covered in blood."Oh," she said, staring at her palm with what seemed like mild curiosity. "That's not ideal."Then her eyes rolled back and she collapsed. My father caught her before she hit the ground, but barely. He was exhausted, injured, running on nothing but adrenaline and stubborn determination."Silvia!" he shouted, lowering her carefully to the floor. "Silv

Chapter 354XENOISAnd Jerome was orchestrating it all, staying safely out of reach while directing his forces like a conductor leading an orchestra of violence. We were winning, but slowly. Too slowly. Eventually we'd wear down, make a mistake, and that would be it.That's when I heard it.A child's voice, cutting through the chaos with absolute authority."Everyone DUCK!"I didn't question it. I dropped to the floor immediately, some instinct recognizing the voice even though it made no sense for that voice to be here, in the middle of a combat zone, in a nightwalker nest.A blast of superheated plasma streaked over my head, so close I felt the heat, and struck the nightwalker I'd been fighting. He disintegrated on the spot, ash and embers drifting down where he'd been standing seconds before.I looked up and my heart stopped.Because standing in the corridor entrance, looking exhausted but determined, was Riley. My five-year-old son. With Lake beside him, hands glowing with portal

Chapter 353XENOISThe interior of the Silvercrest nest was exactly as nightmarish as I'd expected—stone corridors that absorbed sound, minimal lighting that put werewolves at a disadvantage against nightwalkers, and an oppressive atmosphere that made every breath feel heavy.I moved through the darkness with Thorne at my right, Marcus and Klaus flanking us on either side. Four werewolves against god knew how many enemies, searching for my parents in a hostile stronghold while communications failed and bombs exploded in the distance.Just another Tuesday in the Blackwood pack. The bombs were Zade's doing—Team One making their dramatic entrance at the main gate, drawing attention and forces exactly as planned. I could hear the explosions echoing through the stone, feel the vibrations underfoot as his team demolished the nest's primary defenses. My team had infiltrated through the ventilation system exactly as planned, dropping into a storage area and making our way toward the cell blo

"But Lumina, I've never taken this many people through at once. And I've definitely never taken them into active combat. If I mess up the coordinates, if I drop us in the wrong place—""You won't mess up," I said firmly. "Because Riley is going to guide you. Riley, can you see where we need to land? Where we can arrive without immediately getting killed?"Riley closed his eyes again, his face scrunching with concentration. After a moment, he opened them and pointed to a specific spot in the air, as if he could see through dimensions to our destination."There," he said. "That's a storage room about fifty feet from where the main fighting is happening. It's empty right now, and it gives us access to multiple corridors. We can approach from an angle Jerome's not expecting.""Perfect," I said, then looked at eve
