Chapter 81: The Silent Reckoning

XENOIS

Six fucking hours. It has been six hours since Thorne had dragged me out of the school parking lot like I was some delinquent teenager that was caught breaking the laws, and he still wasn't speaking to me.

Well not directly, anyway. Instead, he was using my own PA as a messenger, which was possibly the most humiliating thing that had ever happened to me as an Alpha.

"Margo," Thorne said from where he was seated on a separate table and chair in my office, keeping his voice neutral as he continued, "please tell Alpha Xenois that his behavior today was not only unprofessional but a direct violation of his mate's bond."

Margo, who had been my personal assistant for three years and Lumina's friend for even longer, turned to me with disgust on her face that she barely tried to hide. Margo had hated Sophia since the day I went to the airport to get her and she had kept her opinions honest despite the fact that she could lose her job here.

Chapter 344ZADEToo soon, it was time.I stood, and everyone else immediately quieted, recognizing the shift. "Strike teams, gear up. We leave in fifteen minutes."The organized chaos of preparation filled the next quarter hour. Warriors checking weapons one final time, communication equipment being tested, last-minute adjustments to the plan as new intelligence came in from scouts.Lyn pulled me aside just before we headed out, his hands framing my face as he looked at me with an intensity that made my chest tight."Come back to me," he said simply. "Whatever happens, whatever it costs—come back.""I will," I promised, meaning it with everything I had."And Zade? If you die stupidly, I'm going to find a way to resurrect you just so I can kill you again myself.""Noted," I said, then kissed him like it might be the last time, memorizing the taste of him and the feel of his magic humming under his skin. When I finally pulled away, I saw Xenois saying goodbye to Lumina and the kids, sa

Chapter 343ZADE"Only tactically," Xenois said. "We expected defenses. Now we know they're fresh and actively manned. That means we adjust timing—hit them during a shift change or meal break when attention is divided. And we move faster than they're expecting. Get in, get my parents, get out before they can organize a proper response.""When do we move?" I asked.Xenois checked his watch. "Two hours. Gives scouts time to confirm guard rotations and lets us approach under cover of dusk. Nightwalkers are strongest at full dark, but twilight is a transitional period—they're not at peak power yet.""And werewolves see perfectly well in low light," Marcus added. "Gives us an advantage."We spent the next hour going over every detail of the plan, identifying potential problems and creating contingencies for each one. What if the ventilation system was blocked? What if Samuel and Silvia had been moved? What if Jerome had set traps specifically designed to counter werewolf tactics?By the ti

Chapter 342ZADEI stood in Xenois's armory, running through weapons inventory with Rivers while trying not to think too hard about the fact that we were about to assault a fortified nightwalker nest to rescue two elderly werewolves from a revenge-motivated coalition.Just another Tuesday in the absolute chaos that had become my life."Silver-jacketed rounds," Rivers said, checking off items on his tablet. "Blessed by three different religious traditions because apparently we're not taking chances. UV grenades for nightwalkers. Iron shavings for fae. Spelled binding ropes courtesy of Lynn. And enough medical supplies to run a field hospital.""We're either extremely prepared or wildly overcompensating," I observed."Can't it be both?" Rivers asked dryly.I was about to respond when Lyn appeared in the doorway, looking slightly better than he had earlier but still obviously exhausted from maintaining that mental connection with Shawn."You should be resting," I said immediately, moving

Chapter 341 LUMINA"Promise," I said firmly.Footsteps on the stairs announced Ollie and Shawn's return. Shawn looked transformed—clean, dressed in borrowed clothes that were slightly too short but infinitely better than what he'd been wearing. His hair was still damp from the shower, and some of the haunted look had faded from his eyes."Thanks," he said awkwardly. "For the clothes and the shower and... everything.""You're pack now," Ollie said matter-of-factly. "Or you will be once this mess is sorted out. Daddy said anyone who survives trauma with our family automatically gets adopted. It's like a rule.""Is that actually a rule?" Riley asked skeptically."It should be," Ollie defended. "We've adopted like six people in the last year.""Three," Riley corrected. "Me, Lake, and Carol. That's not six.""Plus Lyn and Lynn and Zade if you count alliance families," Ollie argued."That's not adoption, that's alliance formation.""Same difference."I listened to them bicker with fond amu

Chapter 340LUMINAI wrapped my arms around him, holding him close while he cried against my shoulder. "They know," I said softly. "They're very aware of the danger they're in. But they also know that showing fear would give their captors power over them. So they chose to be defiant instead. To show strength through humor.""But what if they die?" Ollie asked, his voice muffled. "What if the last thing I ever see is Grandma making jokes about caskets?""Then you'll know she died on her own terms," I said. "Still herself, still strong, still protecting her family the only way she could in that moment. That's not nothing, Ollie. That's everything."Riley had moved closer, his expression carefully controlled but his hands shaking slightly. "What are the actual odds of a successful rescue? Based on available intelligence and our current resources?""I'm not going to lie to you," I said. "It's dangerous. There are a lot of variables we can't control. But your father is brilliant, Zade is e

Chapter 339LUMINAThe moment Xenois ended the video call with Jerome, the office erupted into controlled chaos. Everyone started talking at once—Zade coordinating with his team, Rivers pulling up maps, Marcus checking weapons inventory. The energy in the room shifted from tense anticipation to focused determination.I stayed where I was for a moment, processing what I'd just witnessed.Samuel and Silvia Blackwood—the two people who'd made my life hell for years, who'd rejected me as unsuitable for their son, who'd blamed me for Xena's death and tried to destroy my relationship with Xenois—had just faced down their captors with jokes about makeup and arthritis. They'd refused to cooperate. Refused to show fear. Refused to do anything that might compromise their son's vision for a better pack. And Silvia had used her limited time on camera to check on Shawn. A werewitch teenager she barely knew, but who she'd taken in and protected when he had nowhere else to go.I didn't know how to r
