Chapter 3

作者: Perfect Timing
In Kennedy's new social media post, he added a caption along with the video, stating, "Isn't it ridiculous to plagiarize someone else's invention and pass it off as your own?"

I felt my heart skip a beat as a terrifying possibility came to mind. The massive wave of online abuse I faced in my past life might have been triggered by this video.

Kennedy was well-liked online. His parents were professors, and his sister was a journalist. I, on the other hand, was just a plain-looking researcher who had remained out of the public eye. It was only natural that the public's sympathy had tilted in his favor.

Just as I expected, the video soon gained tens of thousands of comments and shares.

"Who could be so shameless as to steal Kennedy's invention?"

"You have to tell your sister right away, Kennedy! Have her expose this through mainstream media so that this plagiarist gets blacklisted from the industry!"

"You have nothing to be afraid of, Kennedy! We've got your back! Who's going to dox this plagiarist?"

I couldn't hold back my rage anymore after reading those comments. I felt like I was reliving the nightmare of my past life. I had received thousands of hateful messages every day back then. I had held Mom and Dad's funeral while still devastated by their deaths at the hands of extremist fans.

Those online trolls disrupted the funeral, smashed my parents' portraits, and intentionally brought party poppers to celebrate.

"You're a shameless social climber and plagiarist! Your parents must have been just as awful as you. They got what they deserved!"

"Your parents are both dead, so you should join them! Your shameless family deserves to be entirely wiped out!"

I couldn't protect the people around me and had developed severe depression in my past life. I suddenly couldn't catch my breath as the agonizing memories flooded back. I instinctively turned off my phone, but not before I saw my name in the latest comments.

"Is Kennedy referring to Callum? I saw their lab announce an upcoming invention before, and it looked really similar to Kennedy's!"

"Are you serious? I can't believe someone would actually dare to plagiarize another person so openly! That's so shameless of him! Someone call him out and tag him!"

"Who is this nobody? How dare he copy Kennedy's invention and try to use his reputation for attention! I'm going to tear him apart!"

It wasn't long before thousands of people echoed the comment. Kennedy's fans started their own hashtags, mass-reposted them, and spread the story to defend him. Consequently, hashtags such as #GeniusKennedy and #KennedyWasPlagiarized appeared on the top trending lists.

Maisie publicly spoke out to take a stand, supporting Kennedy in defending his rights. "Kennedy is a vital asset to the country. He has sacrificed sleep and rest for his new invention, with the sole purpose of serving the nation! Who would have thought that he would be plagiarized?

"I hope the plagiarist will step forward on their own to admit their mistake. Otherwise, I'll personally expose their crimes!"

Maisie's video racked up tens of thousands of likes within half an hour. Kennedy even left a comment that read, "Thanks for having my back and exposing this, Maisie! You're the best!"

I felt a sharp pang in my chest, though I still felt incredibly relieved. I was relieved that I hadn't handed over Version 1.0 of the invention to the lab yesterday. If I had, I would be dealing with a whole new wave of cyberbullying that day.

I forced myself to calm down and got ready to meet with Dr. Lane about my breakthrough, but my phone suddenly buzzed with a new notification just then.

Kennedy had just made another post. "Thanks for all the support, everyone. I know the plagiarism incident has already been confirmed, so I adjusted my approach in time and redesigned Invention 2.0. That takes real talent, which is something a plagiarist will never have!

"Here are my new blueprints. Thank you all for witnessing my achievement!"

I anxiously zoomed in on the photo he posted, only to discover that it was identical to my Invention 2.0.

Granduncle Daniel continued, "It's a highly dangerous curse-seed that operates as a matched pair—a source-seed and a curse-seed. It'll continuously feed on the victim's mind and vital energy once the curse-seed takes root. It will only take five years for you to be sucked dry and die!"Hearing his explanation, I felt a cold dread wash over me. Maisie's interview excuse from three years ago, along with the pastries she brought, had all been a calculated move to set me up. Maisie and Kennedy had both set their sights on me because of my wealthy family background and brilliant mind, determined to strip me of everything I possessed. They were truly monsters!Grandpa, Mom, and Dad erupted in anger after hearing that. "How dare that piece of trash do this to Callum! Damn them to hell! I'm absolutely going to make them pay for this!"Upon seeing my eyes bloodshot with rage, Granduncle Daniel tried to comfort me, saying, "You have nothing to be afraid of, Callum! I woke up the following day and found out that the videos from yesterday had caused a massive uproar. Kennedy's lab announced that they had called the authorities and launched a formal investigation into him.Kennedy's old personal scandals and misdeeds were quickly dug up, and before long, numerous fellow researchers came forward to condemn him online."I'm so fed up with him! I mean, when the entire lab was counting on his project, he suddenly refused to continue, saying he had no idea how to carry out the next steps of the experiment.""He had multiple PhD students working under him, and it turns out, he didn't even know how to run basic calculations. He got several numbers wrong and ended up blowing through a massive chunk of our funding!""If that fraud is considered a genius, then anyone can be one! I'm seriously questioning whether he plagiarized someone else's work in the past!"It wasn't long before the criticism from within the industry was brought to light, with many on

I was in the middle of a chess game with Grandpa when my phone buzzed with a new notification. I opened it and saw that Kennedy had updated his social media again. He had posted a new set of design blueprints shortly after my phone call with Seth, and sure enough, it matched my exact approach. His comment section was filled with compliments, including praise from other researchers."Oh, my God! Kennedy is truly impressive! He actually cracked a difficult problem!""Kennedy is seriously a genius researcher! He's got the looks and the brains! I'm calling dibs on him as my husband!""Kennedy's latest breakthrough is going to drive the whole industry forward! It's history in the making!"I stared coldly at the comments, completely certain that my suspicion was right. There was definitely something wrong with Kennedy. He was able to reproduce my ideas and thought process exactly, as if he could instantly receive every thought I had.It sounded very absurd, but there was no way that th

That evening, Mom and Grandpa put together an amazing dinner. I couldn't help but scarf down four whole plates. Then, I just kicked back in a lounge chair out on the porch to recover. Grandpa casually hummed a folk song from our hometown, and the familiar melody immediately eased much of my distress and anxiety.Mom, Dad, Grandpa, and I sat out on the porch chatting, feeling the cool breeze on our faces and listening to the night crickets.I couldn't help but think that this was exactly how life should be. In the following days, Mom, Dad, and I worked alongside Grandpa on the farm, bringing in the mature crops from several acres of farmland. In our spare time, we followed Grandpa to the river to fish, and in the evenings, we ate our own home-grown vegetables for dinner.Maisie had tried contacting me several times. Her calls were starting to irritate me, so I finally picked up. She sounded worried and kept asking me where I was, but I cut her off coldly, saying, "I'm sorry, Ms.

"Yes, I am," I replied without a moment's hesitation. In that instant, everyone in the private room immediately glared at me with pure disgust, throwing out mocking taunts."That plagiarist got caught in the act! How shameless!"I ignored them and turned to Kennedy with a serious expression to discuss the blueprints. "Your invention is really impressive, which is why I couldn't resist checking it out. Your blueprints, however, only solve the surface-level technical issues. How do you plan to handle the real complications that come up during actual operation?"Kennedy looked visibly flustered for a second, stammering through his response. "I-I'm still looking into that part…"He immediately snapped his laptop shut after saying that.Taking in his panicked reaction, I knew immediately that he had no clue how to handle these complications. I had been extremely busy dealing with the plagiarism accusations over the past few days. So, I hadn't been able to focus on my research. That

Unexpectedly, Kennedy's fans were stunned after hearing this."Hold on! You're telling me that this loser is actually Callum, the guy who plagiarized Kennedy's work?""It's no wonder he got away with plagiarism! He was relying on his identity as Kennedy's soon-to-be brother-in-law! How shameless!""He won't even put Kennedy's name on the property deed! He's so selfish! He doesn't deserve Maisie at all!"Meanwhile, the Quinlans merely watched on indifferently as I was subjected to insults. They didn't even bother stepping in to defend me.When I remained completely unmoved, Kennedy quickly got up and tried to ease the situation. "It's all just a misunderstanding. Callum truly loves Maisie. He even agreed to buy a house for our entire family."I scoffed inwardly. I had never said anything of the sort. My family made its fortune from coal mines, and Maisie's parents always dismissed us as mere nouveau riche.I wasn't foolish enough to use my entire fortune to pave the way for the Q
