Chapter 3

Penulis: Washing Wheat
"I was in such a rush to head out that I forgot to tell Clara. That beef broth is probably way too salty to drink right now," Colter added, scratching the back of his head, grinning sheepishly.

"But it's no big deal, and it's fine even if you can't drink the soup. I'll treat everyone to a nice meal to make up for it."

Just like that, he smoothed the whole incident over dismissively.

But I knew that I was right. The system's effects would trigger for anyone who ate food made by Clara. It seemed that Clara and Colter were screening for beautiful, intelligent mothers to give birth to their baby.

When I gave it more thought, I remembered that I was scheduled to volunteer at an animal rescue shelter next month.

The shelter director, Collin Gould, mentioned that several of their female dogs were currently pregnant. They were constantly ravenous and always searching for food at night.

I planned to stay at the shelter for two days. If I could bring along all the food Clara prepared, wouldn't that be perfect?

I was just about to ask her for some of the homemade pies she loved to bake when she said, "Jessie, since you don't like the beef broth and lemonade, I also brought fresh apple pies. This is the best nutrition for pregnant women."

I smiled, and she immediately shoved the container into my hands.

The onlookers gaped in amazement, while the nurse couldn't help giving her a thumbs-up.

"Gosh! You deserve an award for the Best Friend of the Year!"

Clara covered her mouth and laughed demurely. "Jessie is three months along, right when the pregnancy is just stabilizing. She's my best friend, so of course I have to take good care of her.

"Best friends are our closest family. It's only right that I do my best to care for her."

People around us cast envious glances in my direction, as if they wished they had such a wonderful best friend like her.

I remembered my soul floating above the ceiling of her house in my past life when I overheard Colter complaining to her.

"The fourth child you had didn't turn out as handsome as I expected. We should have reset the system and picked someone else."

At that time, Clara had been applying her makeup. She had laughed and said, "Whatever. I only wanted a child from her, but she's ridiculously fertile, popping out babies one pregnancy after another.

"Besides, she's the one taking the physical toll of the pregnancy, and I didn't feel a thing when giving birth. So when I thought about it, getting a few extra sons for free isn't such a bad deal.

"The whole system game was quite fun. It's just a shame she died so quickly, or I could have kept playing with her a little longer."

Her vicious cruelty and complete lack of morals were what drove me to such a tragic end.

Why? What right did she have to treat me this way?

But now that she willingly offered all the food, I decided that I wouldn't have to waste my breath asking for it.

When I packed the container of apple pie into my bag, Clara's expression immediately grew tense.

"The apple pie is delicious, Jessie. Why don't you open it up and take a bite right now?"

I smiled and took her hand. "And that's why I have to take it home and slowly savor it."

Clara looked like she wanted to say something, while the crowd around us exploded with criticism.

"Look at her putting on an act. I bet she doesn't want to eat it at all. Why would she accept it in the first place if she doesn't want to eat it?"

"Just look at the apple pie's beautiful packaging. It must have cost a fortune to make if it's homemade. Jessie isn't going to stash it away and sell it online, is she?"

"Homemade baked goods like that can fetch a fair price on the internet. Wow, I can't believe Jessie's so disgusting that she'd even schemed against her best friend."

In this life, I wasn't afraid of offending anyone anymore. Given a second chance at life meant that my happiness was a priority, so I would do whatever I wanted.

But Clara followed me around like a shadow. "You've been throwing up and haven't eaten all day, Jessie. How could you go a whole day without a single bite of food?

"Your body won't be able to handle it, and the baby needs proper nutrition, too. You don't have to play nice with me; just eat it."

That was why, before leaving the house, I had made a point to call my real dad. I briefly explained the situation to him and reminded him to call the police if he couldn't reach me within 30 minutes. Now, I knew that my backup was here.Soon, police officers barged into the factory, drawing their guns as they barked orders, "Freeze! It's the police!"Colter and Clara tried to resist, but they were quickly tackled by the officers."Colter Gray," an officer sternly called out. "We received a report, and we've secured evidence of your crimes. You and your wife, Clara Wilder, are suspected of the illegal purchase and deployment of the banned Fertility Transfer System, which has resulted in the death of a young woman."Moreover, you are associated with multiple recent cases involving marriages among high-society pets. Is that correct?"Colter's face turned deathly pale. He could barely even form a complete sentence, while Clara lay completely paralyzed on the floor, trembling all over

"Some stubborn young lady before you refused to cooperate, and now she's dead," Clara continued. "Maybe I would have left your corpse intact if you had obeyed."Do you think I don't know this was all your doing? At first, all I wanted was the baby in your womb, but now, I don't care about that anymore. I want your life!""Monsters! I won't let you get away with this!" I yelled and struggled with all my might, but Colter was strong. He grabbed my arm and jammed the syringe into my vein. The sharp pain made me scream as blood slowly flowed through the tube into the glass vial."Stop moving!" he snarled viciously. When he saw that I was still struggling desperately, he raised his hand and slapped me twice across the face. The sharp slaps left my cheek burning in pain, and blood seeped from the corner of my lips."Ungrateful bitch!"Clara kicked me hard in the stomach, and it hurt so much that I curled up on the ground, drenched in cold sweat. The two took turns raining down a bru

Clara finally broke down. The horrifying, supernatural scene before her eyes was more than what she could handle. She let out a bloodcurdling scream and clutched her head as her body trembled violently."Monsters! They're monsters!"Help me! There are monsters in me!"As if she had been driven mad, she spun around to flee, but her legs buckled and sent her crashing heavily onto the floor.Colter rushed over in his Rolls-Royce, grabbed the shell-shocked Clara, and heaved her into the car. The car shot out like an arrow and fled the scene.Meanwhile, wealthy socialites on the other side of the shelter frantically searched."Who the hell did this? Why did my dog suddenly suffer a miscarriage? If anything happens to her, I'll make sure whoever did this pays with their life!" a pot-bellied man roared.People around him aggressively chimed in and vowed to beat the culprit to death the moment they were caught. It was such a shame that Clara and Colter had fled, but I had a better pla

Colter stood beside Clara, grinning from ear to ear."Thank you, honey! I've been waiting for this day for so long!"Quietly standing a short distance away, I listened to her exchange with her friends as a meaningful smile curled up at the corner of my lips."I still can't believe it. The doctors told me that I had severe reproductive complications and that natural conception was nearly impossible. They even advised us to prepare for long-term clinical interventions or consider IVF," Clara said, intentionally raising her voice to make sure everyone present could hear her."I knew then that the doctors were lying! Look at me! I'm in perfect health, so how could I possibly be infertile? They were messing with our heads just to scam us out of our money!""Exactly!" Natalie immediately chimed in beside her. "We can't completely trust hospitals nowadays. It's a good thing you maintained a positive mindset and weren't intimidated by the doctor's words, Clara, so you conceived naturally.

After waiting for an entire month, it was finally the day to start my volunteer work at the pet shelter.I personally unpacked every apple pie, placed them in the food bowl of the pregnant female dogs, and buried them beneath their kibble. Then, I walked over to a nearby highway overpass to distribute the remaining apple pies to the local strays.Once the prep work was done, I waited for the arrival of Jenville's wealthy heiress and her pregnant greyhound. Word was that she doted on the greyhound a lot and treated it like it was the apple of her eye.Just then, Clara walked over, beaming as she introduced us. "Jessie, this is the good friend I was telling you about, Ms. Lloyd. Her dad is the wealthiest man in Jenvillle."In truth, I knew who the woman, Natalie Lloyd, was. There was no need for an introduction. While I nodded at Natalie, Clara affectionately linked arms with her."Natalie, this is Jessie Carter. She's my best friend, a truly beautiful and kind-hearted soul. Even

I didn't eat a single bite of the apple pies Clara gave me, and that was the reason my baby was still safe in my womb.Naturally, I dared not touch any of the other food she sent either. The next day, I hid all three massive crates of apple pies and hired someone to custom-make three identical replacement ones. I planned to bring her apple pies on my trip to the rescue shelter to be donated to the aggressive pregnant dogs taken in by Collin.Word was that the dogs had been reported for attacking people in the past. Even though Collin had tamed them by now, surely they deserved a little reward for their good behavior, right?Apple pies would help regulate the dogs' digestion, manage their weight, and provide vitamins. I would make sure every single pregnant dog got a fresh slice of the apple pie. After all, Clara liked playing games, didn't she? In that case, I was happy to oblige.A week later, Clara started coming over to my house to bother me all day long. Maybe she was baffled
