Chapter 2

Author: Seven Secs
I'd been given another chance. I'd come back to the exact morning I drove Callum to school. In ten minutes, Elara would accuse him of filming her.

I sat frozen behind the wheel, my heart pounding so hard I could barely breathe.

Then, Callum's phone buzzed. The screen lit up. It was Dorian Ashcombe.

The second I saw the name, ice shot through my veins. Dorian was Elara's boyfriend. He was the boy who'd ended up with Callum's competition spot after he was disqualified.

Callum noticed none of my panic. He simply answered the call.

"Callum, are you at school yet?" Dorian's anxious voice came through the speaker. "I left some stuff in my locker at the gym. My competition notes. I've got class in a minute, so I can't get over there. Any chance you could grab them for me on your way in?"

Every alarm bell in my head went off at once.

"No!"

Callum jumped and turned to me. "Liv? What's wrong?"

The call was still connected. Dorian pressed harder. "Come on, Callum. I'm seriously stuck here. It'll take you five minutes, tops. The gym's right by the entrance. Just grab the notes and leave them on my desk. They're taking attendance in the first period. I can't just walk out."

That was when everything finally clicked. I realized why Callum had gone to the gym that morning, why he'd happened to be outside the locker room at exactly the wrong moment, and why, when Elara came running out in tears, there had been a crowd around her almost instantly.

None of it had been a coincidence. They'd planned the whole thing. Callum had been walking straight into a trap.

Anger surged through me. For one wild second, I wanted to rip the phone out of his hand and tell Dorian I knew what he and Elara were planning.

However, I couldn't. If they were willing to go this far, they wouldn't give up after one failed attempt.

Maybe I could save Callum today, but what about tomorrow? I couldn't spend the rest of my life waiting for their next move.

No. This time, I was going to make sure every scheme they came up with blew up in their faces.

Callum must have noticed how pale I'd gone. He reached over and took my hand. "Liv, are you okay?"

His hand was warm. Suddenly, all I could remember was that same hand clutching desperately at my sleeve in my previous life while he asked me why no one believed him.

My eyes burned. I almost broke down right there.

Dorian was still talking. "Callum, please. I'm begging you. There's literally no one else I can ask. You're always the guy who helps people out, right? And you know I can't afford to replace those notes. If they're gone, I'm screwed."

Callum had always had a soft spot for people in trouble. Dorian knew exactly which buttons to push.

Callum hesitated for a few seconds before finally giving in. "Fine. I'll grab them when I get there."

My stomach dropped. After the call ended, I checked my phone. It was 7:24 am. Eight minutes. That was all we had before Elara came running out and accused Callum.

My hands started shaking against the steering wheel. No matter how hard I tried to stop it, I kept seeing Callum as I'd found him in my last life.

If he walked into that gym eight minutes from now, it would all happen again. Every piece of evidence they'd planted would lead straight back to him.

No. Not this time. I wasn't going to let them destroy my brother twice. What could I do, though? I couldn't let him go to school. I couldn't let him anywhere near the gym. Most of all, I couldn't let Elara get close enough to put their plan into motion.

They'd thought this through—every detail, and every minute. All Callum had to do was show up when they expected him to. After that, the trap would close around him, and there would be no way out.

I took a deep breath and forced myself to think.

At 7:32 am, Callum needed to be somewhere else, and not just somewhere else. I needed proof so airtight that no accusation could touch him. It had to be something that would tear their story apart before they even had the chance to tell it.

However, what could give him an alibi no one could question? What could turn their carefully planned setup into a complete joke?

I pulled up outside the school, and Callum immediately unbuckled his seat belt. "Liv, you seriously don't look good. Why don't you go home and get some rest? I'll grab Dorian's notes and head straight to class."

He tucked away the competition study guide he'd read so many times that the edges were starting to fray, then reached for the door.

I got out right behind him.

The morning bell was already ringing, and students were streaming through the school gates.

Callum headed toward the steps of the main building, then glanced back at me. "Go home, okay? And take it easy on the drive. When I win the competition and get the prize money, I'll buy you a new phone. Yours has that huge crack across the screen."

Callum, on the other hand, was remarkably calm. He just looked over at me with twinkling eyes. "Liv, the prize money should come through soon. So, I can finally get you that new phone."For a second, I couldn't say anything. Then, I smiled and nodded. "Okay. I'll hold you to that."Suddenly, I remembered my previous life and the phone he'd never gotten the chance to buy me. I remembered the future he'd never gotten to live, and all the bright days he'd never gotten to see. This time, he was getting them all back.Later, the school held a special awards ceremony for Callum. The principal publicly apologized for the school's initial handling of the accusation. He announced that the school would tighten its security procedures, improve student education on legal rights and responsibilities, and put stronger safeguards in place to ensure that accusations were investigated fairly. The applause from the audience filled the auditorium.Callum stood onstage—shoulders straight and head h

Sunlight spilled across the courthouse steps, bright enough to sting my eyes. At last, I'd gotten some measure of justice for the Callum I'd lost in my previous life. However, I understood something now. Real justice wasn't hearing the people who hurt you say they were sorry. It was making sure the people who deserved a future were still here to live it.And Callum was.Two weeks later, his injuries had healed well. The doctor said he would make a full recovery and wouldn't have any trouble with sports once he was back on his feet.Callum, however, had absolutely no patience for recovery. He was still on crutches, and somehow that hadn't stopped him from studying every chance he got.One afternoon, I opened his bedroom door and found him sitting at his desk, his injured leg propped up while his right hand flew across the page, working through another equation.I marched over and plucked the pen straight out of his fingers. "Callum Veyne. You're supposed to be recovering."He loo

Her father, Jaxon Winslow, was just as desperate. "We'll compensate you—whatever amount you think is fair. Just give us a statement saying you've forgiven her."I stared at them. Suddenly, I was back in my previous life. I could see Mom and Dad in the school office, begging them to investigate properly. I remembered begging the teachers to believe that Callum hadn't filmed anyone. No one had shown us mercy then.Elara had cried. Dorian had stood there looking disappointed. Elara's parents had pointed at mine like they were the ones who should be ashamed. "You raised a sick little creep, and you still have the nerve to come here asking for sympathy?"If anything happens to our daughter because of this, your entire family will pay for it!"We did. My parents lost their son. Then, they lost any reason to keep going. The memory turned my voice to ice. "No."Seraphine only cried harder. "She's 17! She has her whole life ahead of her. You can't let one mistake ruin her future!"I loo

That broke me. The tears came before I could stop them. The investigation moved faster than I'd expected, mostly because Dorian and Elara had been far too confident. They'd assumed that as long as Callum showed up at the gym, everything else would fall neatly into place. So, they hadn't bothered covering their tracks nearly as well as they thought. The cameras outside the gym filled in most of the missing pieces. At 7:15 am, Elara entered the locker room with her classmate, Maren Quillan. At 7:17 am, Dorian appeared at the gym's side entrance. He didn't go inside. He just waited. At 7:20 am, he left Callum's backup phone outside the locker room door, then quickly walked away. At 7:24 am, he called Callum and asked him to come to the gym to pick up his notes. It was the same call I'd overheard in the car. Then, at 7:30 am, Elara came running out of the locker room in tears, clutching Callum's phone. Right on cue, she started screaming that someone had secretly filmed her. There

However, every word carried through the room."Dorian, I've never done anything to hurt you. When you needed my competition notes, I gave them to you. When you couldn't figure something out, I stayed and walked you through it."When you told me your family couldn't afford the entry fee, I paid it for you. So, why are you doing this to me?"Dorian went rigid.Callum's eyes were red now—not because he felt sorry for himself, but because he finally understood what kind of person he'd trusted."You called me this morning and asked me to go to the gym. Was this already waiting for me? If I hadn't gotten hurt… would everyone be convinced I did it by now?"Dorian's lips parted, but no answer came.I looked at my brother, and something deep in my chest ached. In my previous life, Callum had died without ever getting the chance to ask that question. This time, he finally had.The hallway footage came through soon after. Mr. Wycliffe set a tablet down on the desk. The timestamp in the c

"Tell them we need the hallway footage from this morning."The change in Dorian's face was immediate. Elara glanced at him without thinking. It lasted less than a second. However, that was all I needed. They were scared.Ten minutes later, the school's dean, Lucian Harrowby, arrived at the nurse's office. He came in looking furious, clearly ready to tear into Callum before he'd even heard the full story.Mr. Wycliffe stopped him by handing over the treatment record. "Mr. Harrowby, Callum was here in the nurse's office at 7:32 am. Elara says he was filming her at exactly 7:32 am."Mr. Harrowby froze. He looked down at the record, then at Elara. "What is going on here?"Elara started crying harder. "Mr. Harrowby, I swear I'm not lying. I just got the time wrong. I was terrified. I wasn't thinking straight. I didn't know what to do."She really knew how to cry. Every tear seemed to fall exactly when she needed to. Yet, this time, no one rushed to take her side—not when her story wa
