Chapter 4

Author: Seven Secs
Just then, the nurse brought over Callum's treatment form. "I need the student to sign here."

Callum took the pen. My eyes went instinctively to the clock on the wall. It showed 7:32 am. That was the exact moment Elara had come running out of the gym in my previous life.

Callum signed his name and submitted the form. The timestamp appeared beside it. We had it. At the exact time he was supposedly filming Elara, my brother was here having his injuries treated.

There was security footage. His teacher was standing right here. The nurse had a timestamped medical record. Even the security guard could confirm how Callum had gotten here.

They could tell whatever story they wanted now. They couldn't put Callum in two places at once. For the first time all morning, I finally felt like I could breathe again.

Then, Callum's phone buzzed again. Dorian.

Callum reached for it, but I snatched the phone first and silenced the call. He gave me a confused look, but didn't argue.

Dorian had to be losing his mind right about now. He and Elara had gone to all that trouble setting the perfect trap, and their target hadn't even shown up.

It served them right.

By the time the nurse finished bandaging Callum up, it was almost 8:00 am. I looked at the time, my throat tightening.

In my previous life, the entire school had already heard the accusation by now. Callum had been trapped in a nightmare he couldn't explain his way out of.

This time, he'd never gone anywhere near the gym. He was alive. No one had taken his good name from him.

Mom and Dad would be okay too.

I closed my eyes for a moment, forcing back the tears threatening to spill.

I had no idea what was happening over at the gym. However, one thing I knew for certain was that Elara and Dorian weren't going to give up that easily.

Sure enough, it wasn't long before hurried footsteps came pounding down the hallway. The door to the nurse's office flew open.

Two police officers entered first. Behind them was Elara, and tears were streaming down her face.

The moment she saw Callum, she pointed straight at him. Her voice trembled as she said, "It's him! Officer, that's the guy who filmed me while I was changing!"

The entire room went silent. Callum looked just as stunned as everyone else. The color vanished from his face as he stared at Elara. "I didn't do that!"

I was the only one who wasn't surprised. I'd already watched this performance once before. The difference was that this time, Callum had never set foot in the gym. We could prove it.

I frowned, putting on a look of complete confusion. "Filmed you doing what?"

Elara's tears only came faster. She was clutching a phone so tightly her knuckles had gone white. Her voice trembled as she sobbed. "I was changing in the locker room at the gym when someone pushed a phone through the gap in the door.

"I freaked out. I ran outside, and Callum was right there. He got away before I could stop him, but I managed to grab his phone."

She held it out to one of the officers. "The video is still on here. I'm not making this up… I know Callum gets amazing grades. I know everyone thinks he's going places.

"But does that mean I'm supposed to stay quiet about what he did? Because if girls are expected to put up with this just because the guy has a bright future, what happens to the next girl who tries to speak up?"

My eyes settled on the phone, and my expression hardened.

It was Callum's backup phone, the one he only used for studying. He normally kept it in his desk drawer in the classroom. In my previous life, that phone had been the evidence no one could argue with.

Callum grabbed my hand. His fingers were ice-cold. "Liv, I didn't do it. You believe me, right? I swear I never filmed her…"

Just like before. All he knew how to do was keep insisting he hadn't done it.

Last time, there was nothing I could do to help him. This time, I simply looked up at Elara. "You said Callum filmed you. What time did this supposedly happen?"

Elara faltered. Clearly, that wasn't the question she'd been expecting. However, she recovered quickly, tears still running down her cheeks. "The timestamp on the video says 7:32 am."

A laugh slipped out before I could stop it. It was the exact minute Callum had signed his treatment record in the nurse's office.

One of the officers looked at Callum, his expression turning serious. "A report has been made, and you've been specifically identified. We'll need you to come down to the station while we look into this."

The officers were just about to take Callum with them when Mr. Wycliffe slapped a medical form down on the desk. "Hold on."

He stared at Elara. Then, slowly and distinctly, he asked, "You're absolutely sure this happened at 7:32 am?"

Callum, on the other hand, was remarkably calm. He just looked over at me with twinkling eyes. "Liv, the prize money should come through soon. So, I can finally get you that new phone."For a second, I couldn't say anything. Then, I smiled and nodded. "Okay. I'll hold you to that."Suddenly, I remembered my previous life and the phone he'd never gotten the chance to buy me. I remembered the future he'd never gotten to live, and all the bright days he'd never gotten to see. This time, he was getting them all back.Later, the school held a special awards ceremony for Callum. The principal publicly apologized for the school's initial handling of the accusation. He announced that the school would tighten its security procedures, improve student education on legal rights and responsibilities, and put stronger safeguards in place to ensure that accusations were investigated fairly. The applause from the audience filled the auditorium.Callum stood onstage—shoulders straight and head h

Sunlight spilled across the courthouse steps, bright enough to sting my eyes. At last, I'd gotten some measure of justice for the Callum I'd lost in my previous life. However, I understood something now. Real justice wasn't hearing the people who hurt you say they were sorry. It was making sure the people who deserved a future were still here to live it.And Callum was.Two weeks later, his injuries had healed well. The doctor said he would make a full recovery and wouldn't have any trouble with sports once he was back on his feet.Callum, however, had absolutely no patience for recovery. He was still on crutches, and somehow that hadn't stopped him from studying every chance he got.One afternoon, I opened his bedroom door and found him sitting at his desk, his injured leg propped up while his right hand flew across the page, working through another equation.I marched over and plucked the pen straight out of his fingers. "Callum Veyne. You're supposed to be recovering."He loo

Her father, Jaxon Winslow, was just as desperate. "We'll compensate you—whatever amount you think is fair. Just give us a statement saying you've forgiven her."I stared at them. Suddenly, I was back in my previous life. I could see Mom and Dad in the school office, begging them to investigate properly. I remembered begging the teachers to believe that Callum hadn't filmed anyone. No one had shown us mercy then.Elara had cried. Dorian had stood there looking disappointed. Elara's parents had pointed at mine like they were the ones who should be ashamed. "You raised a sick little creep, and you still have the nerve to come here asking for sympathy?"If anything happens to our daughter because of this, your entire family will pay for it!"We did. My parents lost their son. Then, they lost any reason to keep going. The memory turned my voice to ice. "No."Seraphine only cried harder. "She's 17! She has her whole life ahead of her. You can't let one mistake ruin her future!"I loo

That broke me. The tears came before I could stop them. The investigation moved faster than I'd expected, mostly because Dorian and Elara had been far too confident. They'd assumed that as long as Callum showed up at the gym, everything else would fall neatly into place. So, they hadn't bothered covering their tracks nearly as well as they thought. The cameras outside the gym filled in most of the missing pieces. At 7:15 am, Elara entered the locker room with her classmate, Maren Quillan. At 7:17 am, Dorian appeared at the gym's side entrance. He didn't go inside. He just waited. At 7:20 am, he left Callum's backup phone outside the locker room door, then quickly walked away. At 7:24 am, he called Callum and asked him to come to the gym to pick up his notes. It was the same call I'd overheard in the car. Then, at 7:30 am, Elara came running out of the locker room in tears, clutching Callum's phone. Right on cue, she started screaming that someone had secretly filmed her. There

However, every word carried through the room."Dorian, I've never done anything to hurt you. When you needed my competition notes, I gave them to you. When you couldn't figure something out, I stayed and walked you through it."When you told me your family couldn't afford the entry fee, I paid it for you. So, why are you doing this to me?"Dorian went rigid.Callum's eyes were red now—not because he felt sorry for himself, but because he finally understood what kind of person he'd trusted."You called me this morning and asked me to go to the gym. Was this already waiting for me? If I hadn't gotten hurt… would everyone be convinced I did it by now?"Dorian's lips parted, but no answer came.I looked at my brother, and something deep in my chest ached. In my previous life, Callum had died without ever getting the chance to ask that question. This time, he finally had.The hallway footage came through soon after. Mr. Wycliffe set a tablet down on the desk. The timestamp in the c

"Tell them we need the hallway footage from this morning."The change in Dorian's face was immediate. Elara glanced at him without thinking. It lasted less than a second. However, that was all I needed. They were scared.Ten minutes later, the school's dean, Lucian Harrowby, arrived at the nurse's office. He came in looking furious, clearly ready to tear into Callum before he'd even heard the full story.Mr. Wycliffe stopped him by handing over the treatment record. "Mr. Harrowby, Callum was here in the nurse's office at 7:32 am. Elara says he was filming her at exactly 7:32 am."Mr. Harrowby froze. He looked down at the record, then at Elara. "What is going on here?"Elara started crying harder. "Mr. Harrowby, I swear I'm not lying. I just got the time wrong. I was terrified. I wasn't thinking straight. I didn't know what to do."She really knew how to cry. Every tear seemed to fall exactly when she needed to. Yet, this time, no one rushed to take her side—not when her story wa
