Chapter 8

Auteur: Perfect Timing
Sure enough, Shirley let out a thunderous scream.

Right then, I hung up the call. I didn't doubt for a second that, in less than 20 minutes, everyone who attended my wedding reception would know I had won 50 million dollars, including Beatrice.

Benedict looked completely puzzled. "Didn't you say we should keep the win quiet? Why tell her now?"

He was right. I had said that indeed, but there had always been a condition attached to it.

I had been cautious because I didn't want Beatrice to notice anything unusual, but the circumstances had changed since she could barely keep herself afloat.

"Because… I'm letting someone swing the axe instead."

Besides, people lived on pride. It was now my turn to bite back. Beatrice would receive tenfold the pain for what she had done to me on my last wedding day.

Just as I expected, Shirley, our resident tattler, managed to spread the news of my lottery win to everyone within ten minutes flat. She even told our middle-school math teacher.

Just as I expected, Shirley eventually reached out, spamming me with messages."Lucy, where did you go?""About what happened before, I'm sorry, okay? Beatrice is insane!""Are you busy now? Why aren't you replying?"From her many messages, I could tell exactly how desperate she was becoming. What I needed to do was string her along. I ignored her messages completely, but kept posting vacation photos on my Instagram stories. For every story, I set the visibility setting so that only she could see it. After all, she was notoriously the biggest tattler in our school. Soon enough, everyone else would find out what she knew.By the time I posted my fifth story, Shirley finally cracked. She didn't even bother texting me. She went straight to a video call. This time, I picked up without hesitation."Lucy, I've been texting you. Why didn't you reply to a single one of my messages? Are you busy?" she asked."Huh?" I blurted. "Weren't you the one who—"Before I could finish my senten

The calmer Beatrice tried to sound, the more terrified I felt. I had answered the call with speaker mode on, so Benedict, sitting beside me, heard everything clearly. He instantly accessed our home surveillance system on his phone, and sure enough, she was standing right outside our door. Her gaze was vicious, and she gripped a knife just as she had in our previous lives. At that moment, a chill ran down my spine. Thankfully, I had collected my prize without anyone else knowing. Otherwise, I would've been in deeper trouble.Irritated by my silence, Beatrice pressed on. "Lucy, where are you? Have you forgotten that we used to be the best of friends?""Apparently, we aren't, as of yesterday," I said, then hung up.From the surveillance footage, I saw her furiously kicking my door, leaving a huge dent. But that was just the beginning. All the money she had blown through ahead of time was starting to come back and crush her.For my own safety, I spent a small fortune hiring a

I held the phone slightly away from my ear, but I could still hear her screeching, "It was you, wasn't it? You did something, knowing damn well what's about to happen. Did you swap out my lottery ticket?"Faced with my silence, she sounded more anxious than before. "Answer me! Say something!"I cleared my throat. "Did you even give me the ticket? How could I have swapped your ticket out if I never touched it? Oh, right. You did say that we'll go our separate ways yesterday. Don't worry. I'll stick to that."I hung up, then immediately blocked her on every possible channel. Of course, Beatrice wasn't about to give up so easily. She called again from several new numbers. I eventually got fed up and just switched my phone off altogether.Benedict had overheard the call and was left puzzled. "Honey, didn't you say that the ticket won you 50 million dollars in your previous life? Why didn't she win anything… in this one?"I pressed my lips together, then pulled a slightly crumpled

Benedict was fuming. He stepped forward to reason with Betarice, but I held him back.Beatrice noticed this and sneered. "That's more like it. It's time you learn your place. You and I? We're not even on the same level anymore. The next time you see me, remember to close your eyes. Who knows if you'd get jealous and attack me?"A few guests around her cheered and fawned over her."Beatrice, I knew from our school days that you were destined for greatness. Look at you now! I was right!"Jane Miller looped her arm through Beatrice's, her tone dripping with sarcasm. "I've always disliked Lucy. If I hadn't heard you were coming, I wouldn't even have bothered attending this stupid wedding!"Ironically, even Aunt Sylvia joined in the praise, mingling with the crowd. "Beatrice, remember me? I didn't let you play with Lucy back then because I knew she'd ruin your good fortune. I knew she wouldn't amount to anything!"Surrounded by the people fawning over her, Beatrice was helped inside.

I smiled dryly in response. "How kind of you to tell me not to worry, you backstabber."The manager's face paled at my words. But shortly after, he snorted and signaled two staff members to toss my wedding photo out. I couldn't catch it in time, so it landed face down on the floor. As I bent to pick it up, Beatrice stomped on the photo, right where my face was. I looked up and met her scornful gaze. "Back when you had it better than me, you looked down on me at every chance you got. Now, it's finally my turn to stick it in your face! I'm finally rich—as I should be!"I clenched my jaw. "I looked down on you? When did that ever happen?""Playing dumb, huh? What were you thinking when you gave me that diamond ring in front of all my friends, huh?" she questioned, pressing her foot harder on the photo and twisting it around. "Just admit it—you were trying to show off!"I burst into laughter. So, that was when Beatrice started despising me. It was no wonder she had reduced contact
