Chapter 2

Author: Fortune Mind
Silence descended upon our surroundings as everyone processed my words.

Shane's expression darkened. He was seconds away from losing his temper when I raised my voice again and interrupted him.

"However, Mr. Carlton is the ultimate decision-maker of the company. You have given your special assistant, Ms. York, full authority over the proceedings of this event, and she insists on taking the risk to impress your client. As your subordinate, I don't have the authority to interfere with your decision."

I took two steps back and pointed at the treeless, concrete square outside the cemetery.

"I don't want to get in the way of your preparations for Mr. Paulson, so I'll be heading to the safe zone over there. From now on, Mr. Carlton and Ms. York have full authority over the ceremony. I, Jennifer McQuinn, will not interfere no matter what happens."

I turned around after I was done speaking and didn't spare them another glance as I made my way over to the concrete square.

Valerie let out a mocking laugh from behind me. She clicked her tongue and sneered, "What a coward. She'll never make it big that way. Forget about her, Shane. She's just upset that I'm doing such a good job helping you. Let's have a grand feast once Mr. Paulson signs the contract!"

Shane scoffed. "Let her go wherever she pleases. What a boring woman. Valerie, double-check the positions of the candles. Make sure that all of them are lit when Mr. Paulson gets here."

I walked to the edge of the concrete square and found a position that was in the surveillance camera's blind spot. I then saved the recording and transferred a high-quality version of the video to the cloud.

I scoffed as I looked at the people who were still bustling about on the mountain, making the final preparations.

They could do as they pleased. The bigger the fire, the better.

A few luxury cars appeared on the winding mountain road and slowly drove into the cemetery at around 2:00 pm.

The car door swung open to reveal the tycoon, Edward Paulson. Seven to eight bodyguards clad in black surrounded him when he got out of the car.

Edward was in his 60s. He had traveled to Arlana during his younger years to make a name for himself. Now that he had achieved tremendous success, he prioritized the state of his family's geomancy and his late ancestors' peace above everything else.

Shane immediately fixed an amicable smile on his face when he noticed Edward's arrival.

Valerie also rushed toward Edward and exclaimed, "You're finally here, Mr. Paulson! Look, I specially prepared a grand ceremony to welcome you back to your home country. You can properly pay your respects to your ancestors as well."

She pointed at the mountains of candles that were placed all over the ground and proudly continued, "I commissioned the oldest candlemaker in the country to craft those candles. Each one of them is handmade. They're perfect for today's ceremony. I'm sure your ancestors will appreciate the gesture!"

Edward frowned slightly. Although he did place great importance on the ceremony, he was still a businessman who had experienced much of the world.

He looked at the candles that were stacked up so high that they were nearly touching the branches of the pine trees. He then took note of the howling winds billowing through the mountain.

"Isn't there… a little too many candles?" he asked hesitantly. "The winds are quite strong today, and we're surrounded by trees. Is it safe to light so many candles?"

Shane was just about to explain when Valerie pulled a lighter out of her pocket.

"You don't have to worry about a thing, Mr. Paulson! We have to make sure that the fire is blazing! After all, the bigger the fire, the more sincere your feelings are! Also, I specially hired a geomancer to let me know when's the best time to light the candles. We can't miss it!"

Edward and his bodyguards were given no time to stop Valerie as she snapped the lighter open and moved toward the candles closest to her.

The fire immediately began to spread to the surrounding candles. With a loud roar, the flame suddenly shot skyward, reaching well over six feet.

It was already a windy day, but the draft blowing through the mountain was especially strong that day.

The candles continued to burn brilliantly, the columns of flames licking higher and higher into the sky.

When a strong gust blew past, some of the smaller candles that weren't secured to the ground toppled over and rolled away.

Shane was still oblivious to the mounting crisis unfolding before him. Wanting to support Valerie, he cheered and applauded her, shouting, "Look at the blazing fire, Mr. Paulson! Look at how the flames are reaching toward the sky! I'm sure that your ancestors will be able to feel your sincerity!"

My company began to grow rapidly with Edward's endorsement.I abandoned Shane's style of drinking and putting on an act to convince clients to sign a contract. Instead, I molded my company into a professional organization that was well-versed in geomancy and the law.Business was booming. It only took two years for my company to make a name for itself in the industry. After receiving several hefty investments, I also successfully turned my business into a public-listed company on the stock market.Occasionally, I would run into former colleagues during high-class business dinners. As we conversed, the topic of conversation would sometimes stray toward Shane and Valerie. They had turned into laughingstocks and cautionary tales in the industry.Apparently, Valerie's life was a living hell in the women's prison. She only knew how to put on airs and sow seeds of discord in other people's relationships, so she couldn't get along with the other convicts, who preferred using their fists

I visited Shane and Valerie in the detention center the day before they were transferred to prison.I saw Valerie first through the thick, shatterproof glass. It was obvious that she was having a hard time in the detention center. Her hair, which she used to style meticulously, was frizzy and full of knots. She had deep bags under her eyes, and her complexion was pallid. She was almost unrecognizable.Valerie threw herself against the glass when she noticed me sitting in the visitor's chair. She slapped it repeatedly and wailed into the phone."Jennifer! I've learned my lesson! I really have! No normal person would be able to survive here. They've been harassing me every day!"Please hire a good lawyer for me to appeal my sentence. I don't want to be imprisoned for seven years. I'll be in my 30s when I finally get out. My life will be ruined!"I quietly looked at her ugly, crying face, having no desire to pick up the phone at all.Shane was brought out next. He was dressed in a

Shane finally snapped back to reality when he felt the icy handcuffs around his wrists. He thrashed around frantically and turned to shout at me."You can't be so cruel, Jennifer! I'm your husband! We've been married for five years. Are you just going to stand by and do nothing while I'm hauled off to jail? Delete the video! Tell them that it's fake! Please, I'm begging you!"I felt nothing but repulsion as I looked at Shane's ugly, pleading expression.I was confident that he never once considered that I was his wife of five years when he pushed me into the ocean in my past life.I stepped forward and pulled out another two documents that I had prepared beforehand from my bag, slapping both against his chest."The first document is a divorce agreement. The second document is a contract that I'm relinquishing all my shares."I stared into his eyes as I continued, "Sign the documents, Shane. I don't need your despicable lifestyle or your useless company."A defeated look flickere

I pointed at the signatures on the documents and coldly explained, "Officers, these are receipts for the candles that were purchased for the ceremony. You can clearly see that Valerie was responsible for purchasing them, and Shane approved them."I turned to glare at Shane, who was still acting unreasonably. "Although I was the nominal supervisor of the event, I didn't use a single penny of the project's funds to buy the candles. I also didn't sign any of the purchase orders."From the very beginning, the two of you were the ones who decided to buy an excessive amount of candles just because you wanted to impress the client."Valerie turned deathly pale as she stared at the receipts. She shrieked as she took a step backward, shaking her head wildly. "No! I didn't sign those documents! You forged my signature to frame me, Jennifer!"Besides, so what if I did buy them? It's not illegal to buy candles! You have no proof that I started the fire!"Meanwhile, as Shane stared at his sign

Silence descended upon the interrogation room the moment the words left my lips.Shane's hands on the table stiffened. A hint of disbelief and panic flickered in his eyes, but he swiftly composed himself. He then leaned forward and tried to snatch the tablet from me.Fortunately, he had no choice but to shrink back when the police officer reacted immediately and barked at him to stop.Shane gritted his teeth and hissed, "Drop the act, Jennifer. You weren't even on the mountain. What evidence could you possibly have?"He turned to look at the officer and hastily exclaimed, "Don't believe her lies, officer! She's been wanting to steal the company's funds ever since our relationship became strained. Whatever evidence she has was probably made with AI. She's nothing more than a madwoman!"Valerie also stopped her crocodile tears when she realized that Shane was slandering me. She fixed a pained expression on her face and said, "Jennifer's a terrifying woman, officers. She was the supe

Valerie was still angrily barking out orders when the wails of a fire truck cut through the air and echoed throughout the mountain. The local department of forestry had immediately leaped into action.Several fire trucks and off-road cars with the words "Forest Rangers" spray-painted onto the sides turned on their sirens and sped up the mountain. The massive fire burned for over three hours.Dozens of firefighters and armed police officers worked together to bravely put out the fire. It was incredibly difficult, but with their combined efforts, they managed to stop the fire before it could spread toward the deeper parts of the mountain. However, hundreds of acres of forest around the cemetery had been burned until there were only ashes left. It was hard to estimate the economic and ecological damages.Shane and Valerie had followed the terrified employees when they escaped down the mountain. They weren't even given time to catch their breath when a few forest rangers appeared on
