Chapter 3

Author: Fortune Mind
Edward's expression twisted. He pointed at the candles that were rolling away, yelling at his bodyguards to put the fire out.

In the next second, the candles rolled out of the cemetery's fire prevention zone and into the piles of dried leaves that littered the forest floor.

It had been months since it last rained, which made the pine leaves extremely flammable. It only took seconds for the leaves to catch fire.

The fire began to spread rapidly, not only on the ground, but also up the trees.

Valerie didn't panic at all when she noticed that one part of the forest was on fire. On the contrary, she felt as if the atmosphere had become even more lively. She sprinted toward the tombstone and lit up the two extra-large candles that she had placed there as well.

Unfortunately, in her excitement, she knocked over one of the candles after lighting it.

The candle rolled in the direction of the forest that wasn't on fire yet. Its massive size added to its momentum, making it roll too fast for anyone to catch up to it and put it out. The candle crashed against the roots of a tree, setting it ablaze.

In the span of a few seconds, the entire pine tree forest was on fire.

The flames shot toward the sky thanks to the howling winds, creating thick clouds of black smoke that covered the entire cemetery.

The surrounding temperature rose rapidly.

The solemn cemetery had transformed into something completely different.

"This is insane! You've lost your mind!"

Edward choked on the thick smoke, hacking out violent coughs. Tears and snot ran down his face.

Through the smoke, he watched with wide eyes as the flames spread across the mountain before moving back in their direction. It engulfed the white marble tombstone that belonged to his ancestors, leaving cracks and scorch marks on the surface.

His entire body shook from fury. He shoved Shane, who was trying to support him, aside and screamed, "Are you paying respects to my ancestors or trying to burn them? Where the hell did you get the guts to start a fire in a forest? I paid you to host a simple ceremony, and this is what you came up with?"

Shane was completely flabbergasted. His mind went blank as he watched the flames continue to set the mountain alight.

He removed his jacket and tried to put out the fire, but he was forced to retreat when a scorching wave of heat washed over him. The ends of his fringe had also been burned to a crisp, emitting a foul stench.

"P-Please let me explain, Mr. Paulson! This is just an accident! I'll call someone to put out the fire now!" Shane stammered.

"Get out of my sight! I'm terminating our partnership!"

Edward looked absolutely haggard as his bodyguards dragged him down the mountain. Right before he got into his car, he turned toward Shane and let out a furious shout.

"Not only am I going to terminate our partnership, but I'm also going to file a lawsuit against you! I'm going to sue you for destroying my property and ruining the state of my family's geomancy. I look forward to seeing you locked behind bars for a long time!"

The strength fled from Shane's legs as he watched Edward's fleet of cars disappear into the distance. He nearly fell to his knees.

On the other hand, Valerie, who was already acting arrogantly before, wasn't scared in the slightest. On the contrary, she rolled her eyes and clicked her tongue.

"Mr. Paulson doesn't know a good thing even when it's right under his nose. We prepared such a grand ceremony for him out of the goodness of our hearts, yet how did he repay us? By turning on us and hurling baseless accusations at us!"

Shane stomped his feet in frustration and roared, "Shut your mouth! Our partnership was worth ten million dollars, but now it's all ruined!"

Valerie scoffed and pursed her lips nonchalantly. "So what if it's ruined? It's not a big deal. We just burned a few trees and that stupid tombstone, right?

"So what if the mountain's on fire? He's rolling in money, so he can definitely afford to build a bigger and better cemetery for his ancestors. It's totally unreasonable for him to overreact like that. As expected, the richer they are, the more difficult they are to deal with."

The other employees stared at Valerie as if she had lost her mind.

However, Valerie seemed to be oblivious to their disbelieving stares. She pointed at a few of them and barked out her orders.

"You! Don't just stand there and watch. Hurry and grab a few branches to put out the fire. Why do I have to teach you something as simple as that? All of you are utterly useless."

The employees exchanged glances with one another before they looked at the fire that had spread across the mountain. The wall of flames was over 30 feet tall.

No one was brave enough to send themselves to their deaths.

My company began to grow rapidly with Edward's endorsement.I abandoned Shane's style of drinking and putting on an act to convince clients to sign a contract. Instead, I molded my company into a professional organization that was well-versed in geomancy and the law.Business was booming. It only took two years for my company to make a name for itself in the industry. After receiving several hefty investments, I also successfully turned my business into a public-listed company on the stock market.Occasionally, I would run into former colleagues during high-class business dinners. As we conversed, the topic of conversation would sometimes stray toward Shane and Valerie. They had turned into laughingstocks and cautionary tales in the industry.Apparently, Valerie's life was a living hell in the women's prison. She only knew how to put on airs and sow seeds of discord in other people's relationships, so she couldn't get along with the other convicts, who preferred using their fists

I visited Shane and Valerie in the detention center the day before they were transferred to prison.I saw Valerie first through the thick, shatterproof glass. It was obvious that she was having a hard time in the detention center. Her hair, which she used to style meticulously, was frizzy and full of knots. She had deep bags under her eyes, and her complexion was pallid. She was almost unrecognizable.Valerie threw herself against the glass when she noticed me sitting in the visitor's chair. She slapped it repeatedly and wailed into the phone."Jennifer! I've learned my lesson! I really have! No normal person would be able to survive here. They've been harassing me every day!"Please hire a good lawyer for me to appeal my sentence. I don't want to be imprisoned for seven years. I'll be in my 30s when I finally get out. My life will be ruined!"I quietly looked at her ugly, crying face, having no desire to pick up the phone at all.Shane was brought out next. He was dressed in a

Shane finally snapped back to reality when he felt the icy handcuffs around his wrists. He thrashed around frantically and turned to shout at me."You can't be so cruel, Jennifer! I'm your husband! We've been married for five years. Are you just going to stand by and do nothing while I'm hauled off to jail? Delete the video! Tell them that it's fake! Please, I'm begging you!"I felt nothing but repulsion as I looked at Shane's ugly, pleading expression.I was confident that he never once considered that I was his wife of five years when he pushed me into the ocean in my past life.I stepped forward and pulled out another two documents that I had prepared beforehand from my bag, slapping both against his chest."The first document is a divorce agreement. The second document is a contract that I'm relinquishing all my shares."I stared into his eyes as I continued, "Sign the documents, Shane. I don't need your despicable lifestyle or your useless company."A defeated look flickere

I pointed at the signatures on the documents and coldly explained, "Officers, these are receipts for the candles that were purchased for the ceremony. You can clearly see that Valerie was responsible for purchasing them, and Shane approved them."I turned to glare at Shane, who was still acting unreasonably. "Although I was the nominal supervisor of the event, I didn't use a single penny of the project's funds to buy the candles. I also didn't sign any of the purchase orders."From the very beginning, the two of you were the ones who decided to buy an excessive amount of candles just because you wanted to impress the client."Valerie turned deathly pale as she stared at the receipts. She shrieked as she took a step backward, shaking her head wildly. "No! I didn't sign those documents! You forged my signature to frame me, Jennifer!"Besides, so what if I did buy them? It's not illegal to buy candles! You have no proof that I started the fire!"Meanwhile, as Shane stared at his sign

Silence descended upon the interrogation room the moment the words left my lips.Shane's hands on the table stiffened. A hint of disbelief and panic flickered in his eyes, but he swiftly composed himself. He then leaned forward and tried to snatch the tablet from me.Fortunately, he had no choice but to shrink back when the police officer reacted immediately and barked at him to stop.Shane gritted his teeth and hissed, "Drop the act, Jennifer. You weren't even on the mountain. What evidence could you possibly have?"He turned to look at the officer and hastily exclaimed, "Don't believe her lies, officer! She's been wanting to steal the company's funds ever since our relationship became strained. Whatever evidence she has was probably made with AI. She's nothing more than a madwoman!"Valerie also stopped her crocodile tears when she realized that Shane was slandering me. She fixed a pained expression on her face and said, "Jennifer's a terrifying woman, officers. She was the supe

Valerie was still angrily barking out orders when the wails of a fire truck cut through the air and echoed throughout the mountain. The local department of forestry had immediately leaped into action.Several fire trucks and off-road cars with the words "Forest Rangers" spray-painted onto the sides turned on their sirens and sped up the mountain. The massive fire burned for over three hours.Dozens of firefighters and armed police officers worked together to bravely put out the fire. It was incredibly difficult, but with their combined efforts, they managed to stop the fire before it could spread toward the deeper parts of the mountain. However, hundreds of acres of forest around the cemetery had been burned until there were only ashes left. It was hard to estimate the economic and ecological damages.Shane and Valerie had followed the terrified employees when they escaped down the mountain. They weren't even given time to catch their breath when a few forest rangers appeared on
