Chapter 4

Author: Grassland
Natania crushed my watch under her heel before slapping me across the cheek.

"You idiot! Are you trying to get us all in trouble? You just can't stand seeing us do well, can you?"

The slap left me momentarily dizzy, my ears ringing at the force. After I recovered, I demanded through gritted teeth, "If there's nothing fishy about this factory, why won't you let me call the police? Could it be that you guys are planning something illegal here? And that's why you're afraid of the police getting involved?"

The moment I saw Natania's eyes dart away guiltily, my heart sank to the bottom of my stomach.

So, she was in cahoots with Zachary!

She was well aware that the whole reason I was brought here was so I would be brutally killed by the equipment, then everyone could get a share of the compensation money!

However, Zachary wasn't the slightest bit panicked. He insisted, "The Fuller family is the wealthiest family in the city! As if there's anything we can't handle! I'm just worried that the police coming to investigate will delay everyone from getting to work.

"Will you be able to reimburse them for every second spent not earning money? Besides, we already signed a contract stating that we'll only get to intern at my family's company after graduation if we work the full two months!"

Enraged, our classmates surged forward and began shoving me.

"You piece of shit! You just want to ruin everything for us!"

One hard shove sent me crashing to the floor, my head bashing against one of the machines. A sharp pain shot through me.

Stomping on my head, Zachary cried out in a self-righteous fashion, "We can't let him ruin our bright futures! I suggest we have him sign a contract stating that he'll have to pay each of us six thousand dollars if he leaves this factory. That way, he won't have the guts to leave anymore!"

My eyes widened at his words.

"That's illegal! That sort of contract isn't viable in the eyes of the law!"

Chuckling maliciously, Zachary brought a hand-written contract over and thrust it in my face.

"As long as you sign it, why wouldn't it be viable? Adrian, could it be that you're feeling guilty about something, and that's why you don't dare to sign it?"

Natania and a few others seized me and forced me to grab a pen.

"Zachary just wants you to give us a guarantee. It's no big deal. As long as you don't leave, nothing will happen, so just sign the contract!"

"Adrian, Zach is simply looking out for us! There's a limit to our patience, you know!"

My hand was forced closer and closer to the paper, and in an act of desperation, I lunged toward a nearby beaker of acid.

Knocking the beaker over, I dipped my hands into the spilled acid. In an instant, the acid had corroded my hands.

Relieved at finding a way out of this, I spoke in a trembling voice. "With my hands like this, there's no way I can sign the paper, nor do I want to!"

A frosty look entered Zachary's eyes as his lips curved into a sneer. Ripping the paper to shreds, he said coldly, "I originally thought that having you sign this would be enough to serve as an assurance to the others, but it now seems like I have to resort to drastic measures."

With that said, he fished out a syringe from his bag and stalked closer to me.

"This is a special drug my family came up with specifically to deal with disobedient people like you. Once it's injected into someone, that person will be reduced to a docile simpleton who only knows how to repeat the same motion over and over again."

My teeth chattered in fear as I struggled wildly.

However, Natania and the others gripped my arms tightly, not allowing me any room to resist.

Just as the needle was about to plunge into my arm, the loud wailing of police sirens rang out from the outside.

Instantly panicking, Natania and Zachary fled and were gone in the blink of an eye.

Meanwhile, I seized this opportunity to escape the factory and ran as fast as I could to the airport.

Thankfully, the flight was slightly delayed, and I was able to make it onto the plane in time.

Natania also stepped forward to say, "I can vouch for the truth! He's just jealous that I'm in a relationship with Zachary, so he made a false police report to waste the police force further!"Brad's parents also piped up, "This is all just a misunderstanding, officer! We're the victim's parents, and we've already confirmed that what happened here in the factory was nothing but an accident!"With everyone speaking up in his defense, Zachary stuck his hands into his pockets and strolled toward me with a smug expression."Officer, shouldn't this person receive some sort of punishment for making a false police report? Why don't you take him away with you when you leave with the body? People like him deserve to be locked up for a few days. A little suffering will teach him not to lie again!"Our classmates eagerly agreed. When my parents moved to protect me, they were held back by the group, which refused to let them get close to me.I laughed and laughed till tears threatened to fall

At that moment, the wailing of police sirens rang out in the distance, growing closer and louder. Worried that Zachary would run, the others were quick to seize and restrain him. However, Zachary suddenly tossed his head back and guffawed before yelling, "If I'm thrown into jail today, then none of you will be able to get off scot-free either! You bunch of cowards, if it weren't for me giving you this opportunity, would you all have been able to get any money?"Let me tell you, the only way everyone can avoid having this murder become a stain on their records is to stand with me and say that Brad's death was an accident. In that case, I'll share some of the insurance payout with all of you."That's all you're after, isn't it? Money? So work with me, and not only will you get a share of the money, but you won't get a criminal record either. It's a win-win situation for us all, don't you agree?"The two boys restraining him started to shake when they heard the mention of a criminal

Brad's parents charged forward and joined in the beating, their grief and anger fueling each blow."300 thousand! Despite your young age, you actually murdered an innocent in cold blood, all for the sake of money! Today, we're taking you down with us! You'll pay with your life for my son!"Zachary and Natania glared at me, their bodies battered and bruised."Adrian, this is all your doing, isn't it?"Realizing that the cat was out of the bag, Natania trembled with fear, though that didn't stop her from mouthing off."Your son was just stupid, and that has nothing to do with us! He was the one who disregarded our warnings and touched random machines. He only has his own clumsiness to blame!"Spitting out a mouthful of blood, Zachary gritted his teeth and roared, "Adrian Locke, if you had been the one to die back then, everyone would've been happy now!"My parents snatched up a brick and made to whack him with it, but I stopped them. Clapping my hands, I said with a smile, "You su

Subsequently, I tossed the insurance policy forms everyone had signed two months ago at the manager."The more, the better? Then please explain to us why these forms were mixed in with the job application forms. It's as though you were deliberately trying to mislead us! This contract is clearly a trap from the start!"The manager panicked and tried to run, but I had the others shut the factory doors."I have no interest in finding out what exactly your connection is to Zachary Fuller for now. However, I'm giving you one chance to call him and tell him to come back right now! Tell him that another classmate has gotten into an accident, so there's a massive insurance payout waiting for him to sign off on!"Realizing that he was vastly outnumbered and that I had blackmail material on him, the manager hastily took out his phone to call Zachary.I noticed that the name he had saved Zachary under was "Big Client". This only confirmed my suspicion that he and Zachary were in cahoots with

It wasn't until we were back in our house that my worried parents asked me about what was going on.Hence, I told them about everything that happened two months ago."Fortunately, I managed to call the police, who arrived in time. Otherwise, I wouldn't have been able to escape. Now, the problem is to think of a way to make Zachary pay for his actions."Despite that, I was more worried about my classmates right now. They were so driven by greed that the only reason they hadn't reported Brad's death to the police yet was that they were worried about leaving a mark on their records if they were detained. In my previous life, they had been more than willing to give false testimonies for Zachary for the sake of money. Who knew whether they would turn on me again in this life if Zachary offered them some benefits in return? Thus, I couldn't fully place my trust in them. I had to find someone who would be firmly on my side.In other words, I had to seek out the insurance company involve

As it turned out, Zachary was willing to do anything for the sake of money. Some of the more emotional girls started to cry."Brad was still alive when he was caught in that machine and brutally mangled to death! Adrian, we've been waiting here for you for the entire month! You have to settle this matter today!""He was accepted into one of the top universities in the country! But because of your heartlessness, he's dead now!"Instead of getting angry, I laughed. Zachary was quite adept at absolving himself of all responsibility."Someone was killed, but instead of going to the police, you're coming after me? What's the point? You bunch of brainless sheep! Back then, all Zachary had to mention was the high salary, and you all were already clamoring to go work there! Didn't any of you think it was strange at the time?"Oh, I bet Zachary didn't tell you this either. Those application forms you filled in? Those were simply accident insurance policies he tricked you all into signing.
