Chapter 2

Penulis: Fleur Lil
It was my choice that night that would determine who would become the future Don of the Conti Famiglia.

There were plenty who had assumed that Simone would spare my dignity and walk into the hall by my side. He, however, had his arm around Clodia's waist as he made a high-profile entrance into the hall.

In that instant, everyone's attention was drawn to them.

Clodia was wearing a matching dress in the same color scheme as Simone. She was donning a large pink diamond ring on her ring finger, with her neck covered in hickeys.

Those present instantly murmured with each other while the men exchanged suggestive, knowing looks. They were all speculating that Simone and Clodia had just emerged from sleeping with each other.

There were even some who whispered mockingly, "It's so pathetic. I mean, even with the absolute power to choose her husband, she can't hold onto Simone's heart."

In my past life, such humiliation would have caused me to break down in tears.

In this life, I didn't even bother looking up. I sat quietly in the head seat, gently swirling the glass of red wine in my hand, completely ignoring them.

Simone had been waiting for me to lose my temper and cause a scene, so my complete indifference left him strangely irritated.

He strode over to me and said, "You'd better drop this high-and-mighty act of yours, Eva. If you behave yourself tonight, I'll allow you to come into my room once the ceremony is over."

Clodia tugged at Simone's sleeve and asked in a spoiled manner, "Isn't having me in bed enough, Simone?"

Simone burst out laughing. He reached out to cup Clodia's chin and asked, "You're determined to wear me out, aren't you, you little vixen?"

I suddenly recalled my past life. Simone and Clodia had publicly humiliated me in the exact same way back then. I had trembled with rage, but Simone had only laughed, telling me he loved watching me go crazy with jealousy.

I merely felt utterly repulsed as I looked at them now. I actually laughed instead of getting angry this time. I set my wine glass and mocked him without hesitation, asking, "Who would ever want to step foot in your room?"

In that instant, everyone in the hall burst out laughing.

Simone was laughing the most out of everyone. "Do you not intend to choose me as your husband, Eva?"

He stared straight into my eyes, asking, "Who are you going to choose, then? You ought to know that there isn't a single soul in the Famiglia who doesn't know you love me to the point of giving up your own life, Eva."

He looked at me with pure derision. "Do you actually intend to pick Aldo, then? It's clear to everyone that this uncle of mine is nothing but a psycho who uses brutal methods and doesn't have a romantic bone in his body."

He looked at me with absolute confidence, asking, "Do you actually have the nerve to pick him, especially considering how weak you are?"

I suddenly thought of Aldo. I remembered that when I died in my past life, the very last thing I saw before closing my eyes was that terrifying man.

He eliminated all my pursuers on his own and ran into the hospital holding me, completely covered in blood. He shook violently in that moment from the terror of losing me, and despite his cold nature, his burning tears streamed down onto my face.

Upon seeing me lapse into silence, Simone assumed I was scared. He scoffed and asked, "What's the matter? Did fear finally catch up to you, Eva?"

Clodia sauntered over with a swing of her hips. "Eva probably recalled the rumors about Aldo."

She spoke in a cloying tone, deliberately raising her volume for the guests present. "It's common knowledge that Aldo is exceedingly vicious when eliminating people.

"It is also known that he abstains from women. I recalled that some reckless woman tried to seduce him once, and he had her drugged and dumped straight into the trashiest red-light district."

She covered her mouth and said with a giggle, "Eva would probably be tortured to the point where death would be a relief if she actually picked Aldo just to be spiteful."

In that instant, another wave of roaring laughter broke out among the guests.

In the meantime, sunlight pierced through the dark clouds, shining down on the estate's rose garden. Aldo took my hand, lacing his fingers through mine, and said, "It's all over now, Eva."Two months later, Aldo and I held the Famiglia's most lavish wedding at St. Corvyn's Cathedral. There were Capos from all over the country gathered here, and the Dons of all major Famiglias—including Novarria, Copperveil, and Lumenspire—were in attendance as well.Aldo pinned the Silver Wings Insignia, representing half of the Famiglia's empire, to my chest in front of the entire crowd during the wedding banquet. He announced, "Eva Moretti's words hold the exact same weight as mine from this moment on."Upon hearing that, everyone in the hall rose in applause.During the peak of the banquet, a former Soldato loyal to Simone hid among the staff with a dagger and moved toward me in the crowd.I reacted instantly when the knife was just inches from my neck, wrenching the knife away and driving it

Simone stared up at me, under the impression that owning up to his wrongs would save him from being killed."Lock him up in the third dungeon," I ordered coldly. It was situated in the lowest level of the compound's basement. It suffered from perpetual leaks and a bone-chilling dampness, with only rodents and maggots to keep a prisoner company. It was the very dungeon where I had been confined in my last life after Clodia's betrayal.Simone stayed locked away in there for three whole days without any food or water. He had nothing but the filthy runoff dripping through the cracks in the stonework.Aldo and I went to the dungeon on the fourth day.I held onto his arm as we stood at the edge of the dungeon. Simone was dressed in rags while bound by iron chains, his hair matted into greasy strands, and his face covered in filth. He instantly snapped his head up the moment he heard footsteps. When he caught sight of me, his eyes brightened. He then said hoarsely with cracked, bleed

I chambered a round, raised my arm, and fired a shot. The bullet pierced straight into Simone's thigh.Simone shrieked in pain, losing his grip on the sniper rifle as he tumbled from the window, crashing onto the shattered glass on the ground floor. His blood gushed from his leg, pooling with the broken shards of mirror on the floor. He stared up at me in absolute disbelief, saying, "Y-You actually shot me, Eva…"He ultimately managed to escape under the cover of his men as the gunfire drew to a close.Aldo walked over to me. His shirt was ripped in a few spots, though he was completely unharmed underneath. He pulled me into a tight embrace, his voice shaking slightly while saying, "I couldn't protect you in our past life, so in this life, I'll kill anyone who touches you."I went completely rigid after hearing him mention past lives. I shoved him back abruptly to look straight into his eyes, only to find him watching me closely. I noticed that the murderous intent from the gun

In less than three days, Simone lost all of his businesses and influence, and his followers either pledged loyalty to Aldo or were purged. It was the fourth day when word arrived that Simone had secretly contacted a Mundravian drug lord behind Don Conti's back. He wanted to trade a shipment of weapons for the capital needed to make a comeback.Aldo handed me the intel report, a cold smirk playing on his lips. "Simone is truly as malicious as he is stupid."I took the intel report and skimmed through it. "You should let him proceed with the trade."Aldo cocked his brow slightly.I added, "I'm going to handle the takedown personally."Simone's deal was scheduled to take place at a dockside warehouse at 3:00 am. He showed up with his crew, and the drug lord's men arrived as well. Their firearms were stored in the trucks.Just as the deal was about to proceed, the warehouse's rolling door was yanked open from outside.I stood in front of a dozen black armored vehicles, wearing a tr

Aldo drew his gun and pointed it at Simone.Don Conti stared at Simone's outburst, finally pushed to the point of disillusionment. "Throw him in the dungeon to make him sober up!"It was then that two burly Made Men stepped forward, grabbed Simone by the arms, and dragged him away.Simone struggled with all his might. "You can't give the ring to Aldo, Papa! I'm the one who Eva truly loves! You shouldn't let Aldo trick you, Eva! I'm the one who loves you the most!"Simone's howlings gradually faded away as he was dragged out of the main hall.Aldo brought me back to his private estate after the ceremony. It was a standalone manor with walls lined with an assortment of weapons, but the centerpiece of the room was a collection of photos of me.I realized then that Aldo had been observing me from the shadows the entire time.Aldo cornered me, his warm breath brushing against the crook of my neck. "You really aren't afraid of me at all?"He was renowned within the Mafia for his iro

Simone's expression turned somewhat unpleasant.I took the remote and pressed play, instantly turning on the screen in the middle of the hall. It showed high-definition footage from the second-floor landing from 30 minutes ago. Clodia's spiteful tone echoed across the hall, saying, "I'm already pregnant with Simone's child, so when the time comes, everything in this Famiglia will belong to me, Eva."Clodia then tried to shove me but missed completely, causing her to lose her balance and tumble down the staircase.Clodia's manipulative, deceitful behavior was laid bare for all to see. That footage finally ended, leaving the frame frozen on Clodia's contorted face.I turned to Don Conti and said, "As you can see, I no longer love Simone, Don Conti. He betrayed me and allowed a lowly bloodline to produce a scandalous illegitimate child. He is unworthy of my love and completely unfit to lead this Famiglia."Don Conti looked at the screen, his expression turning grim. "You did the r
