Chapter 4

Author: Nameless
Henry peeked out from Mom's embrace, glaring at me with hostility.

"This is all your fault! You humiliated me in front of my friends, and you made the teachers chew out Lauren!"

As he spoke, he suddenly clutched his wrist, letting out a sharp cry. "Ouch!"

The watch strap on the luxury designer watch Dad had gifted him had snapped, and the face was about to slide off his wrist.

"My watch!" Henry gasped, immediately pointing a finger at me. "It was you! You slammed into me when Mom pushed you earlier! You broke my watch!"

I hadn't gone anywhere near him.

But that didn't matter. Lauren crossed the room in a few quick strides, grabbed me by the collar, and slammed me against the wall.

"Ethan, have we been too easy on you?"

Pain shot through my back when it struck the cold wall.

I looked at Lauren's face, twisted with anger, and felt the last faint bit of hope I'd still been holding onto finally disappear.

An entire year slipped away in the blink of an eye.

On the night before the SAT exams, I knocked on Lauren's bedroom door.

She swung it open, her brows furrowing the moment she recognized me. "What kind of game are you trying to play now?" she asked, her tone dripping with hostility.

I didn't answer and simply looked at her.

Then, without warning, I raised my hand and slapped myself hard across the left cheek. The crack echoed through the quiet hallway.

Lauren froze.

Before she could react, I whipped my hand back and struck my right cheek just as hard.

My face burned, but that physical ache was nothing compared to the torture I'd endured over the past 12 months.

"Ethan, have you lost your mind?"

Lauren finally snapped out of her daze, reaching out to pin my wrists.

I stepped back before she could touch me and continued to strike my own face.

One, two, three.

I didn't keep count of the blows. I only knew that the sharp stinging in my face gradually faded into a numb throb, and a distinct metallic tang began to pool in my mouth.

Lauren looked completely paralyzed by my reckless display. She stood frozen at the door, the irritation and disgust on her face slowly morphing into pure shock and panic.

I finally stopped once my cheeks had swollen into angry red welts and a thin trickle of blood began to seep from the corner of my mouth.

When I spoke, my voice sounded raspy and broken, much like a prisoner begging for mercy. "Lauren, I promise I won't cause any more problems for Henry."

I held her gaze and enunciated every word, "I'm begging you… Just let me finish my exams tomorrow. Please?"

My tone was calm, yet it carried a hint of exhaustion and despair.

Lauren's throat bobbed as she swallowed hard. Finally, she averted her gaze, forcing a single word through her gritted teeth, "Fine."

Once I had the promise I needed, I turned around and dragged myself back to the dark storage room.

The next day, I made it to the exam center without incident.

Henry never showed up, and neither did anyone else from the Hefford family.

Lauren had actually kept her word.

After I finished the final paper, I didn't go home.

Instead, I went straight to the train station, used the small amount of money I'd managed to save, and bought the cheapest ticket I could afford to somewhere far south.

Before boarding, I snapped my SIM card in half and dropped it into the trash.

As the train pulled away, I watched the city lights disappear behind me without a single shred of regret.

Then, two months later, I was dragging my suitcase up to the gates of my new college campus when a familiar voice sounded behind me.

"Ethan."

The vase hit the floor with a deafening crash and shattered into pieces."This is all Ethan's fault! Everything that's happened to this family is because of him!"Henry was completely hysterical, dragging his fingernails down the wall with an ear-splitting screech. "Why don't you love me anymore, Mom? Why are you believing all the trash he's feeding you? I hate him! She simply stared at Henry's face, twisted by jealousy and rage, until every trace of warmth disappeared from her eyes.It was no longer as though she were looking at her beloved son but at a piece of evidence. At that moment, Mom's phone, which she'd left on the living room coffee table, suddenly began to ring.Martha instinctively glanced at the caller ID.A second later, she frantically sent me a message. Mom had been lied to. For 18 years, Dad had made a complete fool of her.Once that possibility took hold, Mom couldn't get it out of her mind. The next day, she told Henry they were going shopping. Instead, she drove him to the most reputable DNA testing center downtown.Mom really did have him tested.Martha secretly messaged me afterward and included a blurry photo of Mom's car parked outside the testing center.According to her, Mom hadn't said a word during the drive home. Henry cried beside her the entire way, but she never tried to comfort him. Eventually, all she uttered was, "Be quiet."I read the message and replied, "Thank you."The wait for the results must have been agonizing for Mom.Over the next few days, my phone was unusually quiet, and even the online uproar seemed to lose momentum, as though someone had hit pause on the entire scandal. Henry had probably been frightened enough by Mom's sudden change in attitude that he no longer dared to stir up more troubl

Just as Dad's carefully staged interview managed to calm the storm slightly, an anonymous post started making the rounds on the campus forums and social media platforms. The title read, "The Truth About Dreston's New Academic Golden Boy, E.H. Talk About Biting the Hand That Feeds You."Whoever wrote it claimed to know our family intimately and laid out an elaborate story about an ungrateful impostor stealing someone else's life.According to the post, I had repaid my family's kindness by resenting my sickly younger brother, deliberately setting him up again and again, then running away from home and playing the victim in the media. By painting myself as the one who had suffered, I supposedly won public sympathy while dragging my family's name through the mud.Every line was carefully engineered to paint me as a twisted, ungrateful villain.I stared at the photo attached to the post. Henry was smiling brightly beside me, looking innocent and carefree, while I stood farther back i

Lauren had ignored every one of those moments when they happened. Now, each memory came back with such clarity that unease began creeping into her chest. She looked at Henry, who was still putting on his tearful performance, and for the first time, she asked a question she'd never once thought to doubt."Henry, on the day of the SAT exams… are you sure you didn't tear up your own admission ticket?"Henry's crying stopped abruptly.…Meanwhile, my new life was interrupted by a sudden phone call from an unknown number. I answered, and Dad's cold, familiar voice echoed from the other end, "Ethan, this is your father." His tone held no warmth, only the same unquestionable authority he'd always used with me. "You have ten minutes to get down to the campus gates."I hung up and blocked the number.Ten minutes?Dad seemed to have forgotten that the Ethan who obeyed his every command had already died on an operating table in my previous life.I didn't have time for them.
