Chapter 5

Author: Little Pumpkin
Melissa's livestream had already drawn over 100 thousand viewers. The screen was flooded with comments, all condemning me.

"This woman is pure evil."

"We need to expose her and destroy her reputation!"

Melissa sat in front of her tent, her eyes red, and her hair deliberately messy. She sniffled into the camera. "Thank you, everyone, for your concern. I didn't sleep at all last night. Every time I closed my eyes, I imagined Max crying out in the forest.

"I just don't understand why Lauren is so cruel. We're all colleagues, after all. Even if she didn't want to lend me her drone, she could've just said no. Why did she have to destroy Max's only chance of survival?" She cried as she spoke.

Right on cue, Greg appeared in frame, handing her a tissue. "Melissa, don't be sad. That woman isn't worth it."

He then turned to the camera. "Don't worry, everyone. We already made Lauren sign a compensation agreement. Once we're back in the city, we'll drag her to Melissa if we have to, and make her kneel and apologize to Max!"

The comments erupted again.

"She must kneel and apologize!"

"Post a picture of her. We'll make her pay!"

Melissa bit her lower lip, pretending to hesitate. "I don't know… She may be awful, but she's still a colleague. I just hope she realizes her mistake, pays for my emotional damages and Max's value. If she apologizes publicly, maybe I won't press charges."

Watching her put on a show made my stomach churn. Not only was she demanding compensation, she was playing the saint while trampling on my dignity.

Then, Mr. Woodruff leaned into the camera and cleared his throat. "Hello, netizens. I'm their supervisor. Our company has zero tolerance for employees like Lauren, who destroy team harmony and lack basic morality. Once we're back, I'll immediately file for her dismissal."

Approving reactions flooded the screen, and Melissa couldn't hide the smile on her face.

But just as the livestream insults reached their peak, a piercing siren rang outside the campsite. Soon, several off-road vehicles marked with the words "Forest Police" and "Department of Forestry" roared into the campsite. The headlights blared straight at Melissa, blinding her and forcing her to squint.

Doors slammed open. Uniformed officers jumped out, their expressions grim as they strode toward the crowd.

Greg shrank back, stepping aside.

Mr. Woodruff froze. "Officers, what's going on here—" he stammered, but was shoved aside before he could finish.

The lead officer scanned the group, holding up a bloodstained dog collar. His voice cut through the livestream's speakers. "Who is the owner of this Mastiff?"

Melissa's eyes lit up at the sight of the collar. She didn't even put down her phone, immediately raising her hand. "Me! I'm Max's owner! Officer, where is he? Is he okay?"

The officer fixed his gaze on her and raised the collar. "Your dog broke into the core area of the national nature reserve and killed three endangered wild Key deer on the spot. You are required to come with us for the investigation. Prepare to face criminal charges and financial compensation."

My phone buzzed with a notification. It was a message from the company group chat. The financial crimes case had reached its verdict. Mr. Woodruff was convicted of embezzlement and bribery by non-state personnel, the sums enormous. He was sentenced to three years in prison, with all illicit gains confiscated.Word spread that his wife filed for divorce the same day, taking their child and moving back to her parents' home.As for Greg, his record of sexual harassment and misconduct left him completely finished in the industry. Last I heard, he had gone to work at a shady factory out of town. Because of his dishonest behavior there, his coworkers beat him up, leaving him with a broken leg.All those who had once tried to crush me had fallen into the holes they had dug themselves.I kept my phone away and hailed a cab. "To City Hospital, please."Half an hour later, carrying a basket of fresh fruit, I walked into the hospital's recovery ward.Pushing the door open, I saw my dad sit

Melissa suddenly lifted her head and glared at me. Her eyes burned with both hatred and desperation."Defendant Melissa Schubert, you are charged with endangering protected and endangered wildlife. Do you have anything to say in your defense?"The judge's stern voice echoed through the courtroom.Melissa's body shook violently. She collapsed to her knees inside the defendant's box, tears and snot streaming down her face. "Your Honor, I'm innocent! It was an accident. Max is my everything. How could I send him to his death? I loved him too much. I just wanted him to experience nature…"She sobbed, then turned toward me, her voice shrill. "Lauren, speak for me! We were colleagues. You know how much I loved Max. Why would you use a fake video to destroy me? You're trying to kill me."Even now, she tried to guilt-trip me."Objection! The defendant is out of control. Her remarks are manipulative and hostile." The prosecutor rose immediately. The judge struck the gavel. "Objection sus

Inside the detention center, Melissa had gone mad, desperate to earn leniency to reduce her sentence. She reported to the police that Mr. Woodruff had taken kickbacks and bribes from suppliers during company procurement projects over the past two years. She even revealed that the so-called team-building camping trip had been organized through an unlicensed, shady travel agency he had hired to line his own pockets. The police followed the trail, and Mr. Woodruff was quickly taken from his home by the financial crimes unit.Next was Greg.Melissa exposed how he had constantly fawned over her at work, and even accused him of abusing his position to harass two female interns. Those interns, who had previously stayed silent out of fear, now stepped forward to file police reports.Greg, already detained for obstruction and misconduct, suddenly faced new charges of sexual harassment. This "dog-eat-dog" spectacle spread quickly through the company. Everyone was shocked, and the way they

The dark cloud that hung over me in my past life was finally torn apart by my own hands. That afternoon, I requested half a day off and took a cab to the Forest Police Department.I was received by the officer who had led the team yesterday. "Miss, you came at the right time. We were just about to ask you to confirm some details."He poured me a glass of water and gestured for me to sit. "Melissa refuses to admit she deliberately let her dog into the reserve. She insists the dog broke free on its own, and that she had no idea. If it's negligence, the sentence and bail will be different."I sipped the water, a cold smile tugging at my lips. "Of course she won't admit it. But, officer, I came today to deliver her a gift."I pulled a flash drive from my bag and handed it over."What's this?" he asked, puzzled."My drone may have been destroyed when it was kicked into the lake, but it had a real-time cloud backup feature." I calmly met the officer's eyes and continued, "Before it fe

Melissa's mother lunged at me, trying to grab my hair. "You little bitch! You ruined my daughter's life!"I had been ready. I stepped aside, and she stumbled, crashing into a potted plant."You dare dodge?" Melissa's father roared. He tried to rush forward, but two security guards intercepted him immediately."This is company property. Cause more trouble and we'll call the police!" the head guard barked.Melissa's mother scrambled up, leaves stuck in her hair, and pointed at me. "Police? Go ahead, call them! My daughter is locked up, facing hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines, and you're standing here free?"Then, suddenly, she shifted completely, dropping to her knees and clutching my leg. "Lauren, please. I'm begging you. You had that drone, didn't you? Why didn't you use it sooner? If you had helped Melissa find Max sooner, he wouldn't have killed those deer, and Melissa wouldn't be in jail. Tell the police it was your fault, that you didn't look after the dog properly an

I locked eyes with Mr. Woodruff and spoke slowly. "This matter will be properly handled by the company's legal department and the police."The officers' expressions hardened. One of them shot Mr. Woodruff a cold glance before turning to Melissa, who was still sprawled on the ground. "The evidence is clear. Take her away."Two officers stepped forward and pulled Melissa up. The handcuffs snapped shut around her wrists with a sharp click.Melissa broke down completely. Her hair hung wild as she struggled and screamed at me. "Lauren Brooks! You set me up! You knew there were Key deer in the forest, didn't you? You refused to lend me the drone on purpose."Looking at her twisted face, I leaned closer, my voice low enough for only her to hear. "Yes. I knew. And I also know… your life is over."The police cars roared out of the campsite, leaving behind clouds of dust. Melissa's cries echoed through the valley. Her livestream chat had already turned against her, filled with curses and s
