Scarlett waited behind the car as Marcus finished his conversation with Ron.

A while later, there was a muffled sound and it was over. Marcus came to meet Scarlett, wiping the blood on his hands with a handkerchief.

Scarlett stared at the blood splattered on his clothes and wondered for a moment if Marcus had tortured Ron a bit.

In the end, she decided it was not her business. It was not like she cared about either of them.

Scarlett paused at the tone they spoke about the settlements with. Why did Garren sound upset?“Are the settlements not a good thing?” Scarlett asked bluntly.Garren shook his head though Scarlett could not see him.“They are technically alright. Good location. Food. Water. Air conditioning. It just rubs me the wrong way…Like why would random people go out of their way to care so much for strangers?”Shirley nodded. “Yes, there has to be some kind of catch but most people are not willing to look past the benefits—”“Including Garren’s parents?” Scarlett added, understanding the picture now.The couple has a real point. This was the apocalypse, a very non-ideal time to be thinking of others or playing superhero. Yet the founders of these settlements had decided to take care of literal strangers with no benefit to them. The more Scarlett thought about it, the less it made sense.Maybe one or two humanitarian groups would make sense but it sounded like there were multiple, popping up aro

“Water,” Donna whispered as she blinked into consciousness.Lee helped her sit up slowly, holding the water bottle to her lips. Donna drank greedily and would have finished the water if Claire had not told her to stop.“Take it easy,” Claire said. “You have been unconscious for quite some time now.”It took Donna a few minutes to remember what had happened. When she did, she started to look around with alarm.“The fire,” she gasped out, her chest heaving. “The girls. Where are they? Did they get out?!”Lee let out a small sigh. “They all died. Only Claire and Nica made it out.”Donna let out a strangled sound and instantly burst into tears. Everyone remained silent around her, letting her cry to her heart’s content.Scarlett doubted that Donna had formed some kind of bond with the girls and suspected that she was crying out of guilt. That because she was involved in Maplewood, even if she had betrayed the gang, she was involved in their deaths. After a few minutes, she stopped and wip

They all waited but there were no more explosions.Leon decided to risk it and go closer to the window to check.“What is it?” Scarlett asked, her heart pounding in her chest.“The electric poles,” Leon replied a moment later. “They fell and exploded. I can see a fire in the distance. I’m not sure if it is because of the heat or the plants.”Scarlett paused and pinched the bridge of her nose. These days, it was just one problem after another.“How about the wall?” Lee asked, going over to Leon’s side. “The explosion hit pretty hard…oh, there are no scars.”That was when Scarlett remembered that the exterior of her house was fortified. The base’s fortified features must be protecting the house in the real world as well. She explained all of this to them and they sighed in relief.“At this point, I should probably stay in the base forever,” Nica said, curling up on one of the couches.Scarlett smiled and they all headed into the base to sleep.Early the next morning, they got started on

And cases of jewelry.“We will meet here in three days,” Marcus said. “I will try to get in touch with the settlements during that time and figure out a deal.”Scarlett nodded and Marcus entered his car to drive off. Scarlett made sure that he had gone a significant distance before putting the items in her pocket space. The car she had come with had been one of the cars that the Maplewood gang members in her building used to use. Lee had given her the keys. She could have taken her mod

Scarlett’s hand instantly flew to her gun. She dropped to a squat, pulling down Marcus beside her.Marcus trembled all over but remained quiet.Scarlett peeked around the side of the car to get a closer look at what was happening. Two men stood opposite each other, one holding a sashimi knife over the other. The man who was on the floor clutching his bleeding sleeve.“You said that we would split the loot if I led you here,” the bleeding man hissed. “What the hell are you doing now?”The attacker scoffed, leaning down to grip the man’s chin tightly with his fingers. “And since when did I take orders from you? Who do you think you are?”“You would not even know about the supplies without me—”As the victim’s voice started to rise again, the attacker slapped him, pointing the knife at his neck. “Be quiet, you bastard! Are you trying to give us away?”Marcus replayed the voices in his head until he was sure without a doubt.“Ron,” he whispered.Scarlett’s head snapped back for a moment.

Marcus almost did not expect Scarlett to come. For starters, getting to each other in the first place was going to be a nightmare.Everyone was prowling the streets like zombies, looking for what to eat and drink. While there was still running water in some homes, many pipes had started to melt in the heat, especially in homes that were on the older side. The weather returning to normal had lured the people into a false sense of safety and hardly anyone thought to stock up on food as they had done during the cold. The money they had been trading for was now useless. And having learned from the period of the cold, no one was willing to reveal that they had supplies. In just a short while, society had been reduced to a hellscape.Marcus was currently hiding behind his car that had a tarp over it. Whenever he heard movement or voices outside the park, he would duck until they left.Scarlett found him in that position, squatting against the ground.“Hey,” she greeted softly and he jumped.
