The Game

The guest house was not a guest house.

It was a glass villa behind the main mansion in the Hamptons, surrounded by pine trees, with a fireplace that was already lit when we arrived. It smelled like wood and sea salt and him.

Alexander carried me inside and placed me gently on the large cream-colored sofa. He knelt to take off the hospital slippers someone had given me. His hands were careful.

"You should rest. I'll get you clothes," he said, his voice still a little hoarse from the car ride. He had barely spoken the whole way, his knuckles white on his armrest whenever he looked at me.

"Alexander, wait."

He stopped at the doorway.

I sat up, the blanket falling from my shoulders. I was still in the thin hospital gown, my hair a mess, no makeup, bruises fading on my arm from the IV. I had never felt less beautiful and never felt more powerful.

"Don't you want to see the look on Daniel's face when he realizes he's been betrayed?" I asked.

He turned slowly.

I continued, my heart pounding so loud I was sure he could hear it. "He deceived me. He used my amnesia. He brought his first love into my home and told my son to call her Mom. If he can deceive me, then why can't we deceive him in return?"

Alexander's eyes darkened. "What are you saying, Sarah?"

"I'm saying I don't want to just disappear quietly and file for divorce like a good girl," I said, standing up. My legs were still weak but I forced myself to walk to him. "I want him to feel what I felt. I want him to know what it feels like to think he has everything under control, and then realize the woman he erased is the one holding the knife."

I stopped right in front of him. I had to look up. He was so much taller than Daniel. So much more solid.

"He thinks I'm still in that hospital bed, confused, believing Lisa is my best friend," I whispered. "He thinks he won. What if we let him keep thinking that?"

"Revenge is a dangerous game, Sarah," Alexander said quietly, but he didn't step away. "Especially with a man like Daniel. If he finds out—"

"He won't find out," I said. "Not if we're careful. I will go back to being his wife. The confused, obedient wife. And at night... I will be yours. Let him suspect. Let him go crazy trying to prove it. But he will never find evidence."

"Let him get angry," I said. "I am no longer afraid of his anger. I have nothing left to lose. Unless... unless you don't want to be part of this."

I was playing a dangerous game too. I was offering him something I had never offered any man before — not just my body, but my rage, my plan, my broken trust.

He stared at me for a long time, and I saw the war in his eyes. The gentleman who had taken care of me in the hospital versus the businessman who had been waiting five years and the man who wanted me.

Finally, he reached out. Not to kiss me, but to cup my face with both hands, forcing me to look at him.

"Do you know what you're asking?" he asked.

"I know exactly what I'm asking," I said. "I'm not asking you out of gratitude. And I'm not confused from the accident. My memories are back. Every single one. I know who you are, Alexander King. And I know who I am now. I am a woman who has decided to play his game back. For the first time in five years, I want to choose something for myself."

That did it.

He kissed me.

It wasn't gentle like I expected. It was desperate, like a man who had been holding his breath for five years and was finally allowed to breathe. His hands slid from my face into my hair, and he pulled me against him.

I kissed him back with all the anger and hurt and newfound freedom inside me. I wasn't thinking about Daniel or Lisa or Ethan. For once, I was thinking only about me. What I wanted.

He lifted me again, and this time it was different. This time I wrapped my legs around his waist, my arms tight around his neck. He carried me past the living room, down the short hallway, to the bedroom where the bed was already turned down.

He laid me down softly, his body hovering over mine, his eyes asking one last time if I was sure.

I answered by pulling him down to me.

What happened next was not just about revenge. It was about reclaiming. Every touch felt like he was erasing Daniel's cold, careless touches from my skin and writing something new, something that was mine.

The fire crackled outside the bedroom door. The city lights were far away. In that glass house, there was only us.

A long time later, we were lying together, his arms around me, my head on his chest, listening to his heart beat fast and steady, when my phone rang.

We both froze.

I had left my old phone at the hospital. This was the new phone Alexander's assistant had brought — but Daniel had somehow gotten the number. Probably from the hospital records. He listed himself as my emergency contact.

On the screen: _Daniel Foster_

Alexander tensed. "Don't answer."

"No," I said, a slow, cold smile forming on my face. "I need to answer. If I don't, he will suspect even more. I need to sound like the wife he thinks I am."

I picked up, putting it on speaker, and let my voice become weak and confused again — the amnesiac Sarah. I quickly pulled the blanket up to my neck, hiding everything.

"Hello?" I said, breathless, small.

"Sarah! Where the hell are you?!" Daniel's voice exploded from the phone, angry and panicked. "The nurse said you discharged yourself! You have amnesia! You can't just leave the hospital! Where are you? Is someone with you? Did that bastard Alexander King take you?"

Alexander's eyes flashed. He pulled me closer, his hand tightening on my waist. I could feel his anger, but I put a finger to his lips. _Don't make a sound._

"I... I don't know," I whimpered into the phone, playing my part perfectly. "I was scared... I didn't want to stay there... A kind nurse helped me... I'm in a hotel... alone..."

"Alone? Sarah, you are being ridiculous! Come back right now! Ethan is asking for you! Lisa and I are worried sick!"

At the mention of Lisa's name, I felt a wave of nausea. Alexander felt it too. He started to trace slow, soothing circles on my bare shoulder under the blanket, trying to calm me down. His touch was warm, intimate.

"Daniel... my head hurts..." I said, letting out a small, involuntary gasp as Alexander's fingers brushed my skin, and as the stress of the phone call made my body shiver.

On the other end, Daniel went completely silent.

Then: "What was that sound?" he asked, his voice suddenly sharp, suspicious. "Sarah? Are you... are you with someone? Who's there with you? Sarah! I heard someone breathing!"

My heart stopped.

I looked at Alexander, my eyes wide, a silent question. _What do we do?_

Alexander looked at the phone, then at me, and a slow, dangerous smile spread across his face. He leaned back, away from the phone, and mouthed one word: _Lie._

I took a deep breath and forced a confused laugh.

"Daniel, don't be silly," I said, my voice soft and innocent. "It's just the TV. I'm watching TV in the hotel room. There's no one here. Why would you think that? I would never..."

I let my voice trail off, like I was too hurt to even finish.

There was a long pause. I could hear Daniel breathing hard on the other end. He wanted to believe I was lying. He wanted to accuse me. But he had nothing. No proof. Just a sound.

"...Okay," he finally said, his voice low and suspicious. "But I'm coming to get you tomorrow. Don't go anywhere. Do you understand?"

"Yes," I whispered. "I'll be waiting for you."

And I hung up.

Alexander stared at me. "You were perfect."

I looked down at the phone in my shaking hand. "He suspects now," I said. "He heard something. He knows something is wrong."

"But he can't prove it," Alexander said, pulling me back into his arms. "And that's what will drive him crazy.”

Daniel started to follow me.I knew because Alexander told me first."He hired a private investigator," Alexander said on the phone. His voice was low, calm, like he was telling me the weather. "A cheap one. A man named Mark. He has been outside your house since 6 a.m."I was in the kitchen, making Ethan's lunchbox, pretending to be the perfect mother. Lisa was watching me from the doorway, her arms crossed, her eyes sharp."Are you scared?" I asked Alexander, my voice barely a whisper.Alexander laughed — a deep, dangerous laugh. "Sarah, I am Alexander King. I have been followed by better men than Mark. The question is... are you scared?"I looked at Lisa. She was smiling. She thought Daniel following me meant he still loved me. She thought he was protecting me.She had no idea Daniel was following me because he thought I was cheating."No," I said. "I'm not scared. Let him follow me. Let him waste his money. He will find nothing."And that became our new game. The next morning, I di

Daniel did not trust me.I knew it the moment he came home that evening with a box of my favorite pastries and a smile that did not reach his eyes."Sarah, I made a reservation," he said, placing the box on the table like a peace offering. "Just the two of us. For tonight. To celebrate you coming home."Lisa, who was sitting on my sofa, feeding my son grapes, froze. "Daniel? Tonight? But you said we were going to—""We were going to stay in," Daniel cut her off sharply. "Plans changed."I saw it. The crack. For the first time, Daniel was choosing me over Lisa, not because he loved me, but because he wanted to watch me. He wanted to test me. He wanted to see if I would slip.I smiled sweetly. "A date? That sounds lovely, husband."But inside, my heart was screaming. Tonight was the night Alexander was supposed to meet me.I had hidden my second phone in the laundry basket, under the clean towels. As soon as Daniel went to shower, I grabbed it and typed with shaking hands:_Can't tonig

  • Reborn After Betrayal: My Ex-husband Rival's Spoils Me    The Night He Started Watching

Daniel locked my door that night.I heard the click. I heard his footsteps go downstairs. I heard Lisa whispering, "Is she asleep?" and Daniel whispering back, "Let her sleep. She's sick."Sick. That was what he called me. now. Sick. Confused. Broken. He had no idea that the sick, confused wife he had just locked in was sitting in the dark, smiling, holding a second phone in her hand.I waited until the house went quiet. The next morning, I woke up in Alexander's bed and for three seconds, I forgot everything. The sheets smelled like him. Wood and sea salt. His arm was heavy across my waist. The fireplace was still glowing faintly. For three seconds, I was just a woman who had slept well for the first time in five years. Then my phone buzzed._Daniel Foster: I am on my way. Send me your location. Now._My stomach dropped.Alexander opened his eyes. He looked at the message over my shoulder and his jaw tightened."He's coming," I whispered."Let him come," Alexander said, sitting up. "He won't find you here.""He will if I don't send him a location," I said. I was already out of bed, my legs still shaky, looking for my clothes. "I told him I was in a hotel alone. If he comes to this villa and finds me here, it's over. He will have his evidence."Alexander watched me dress. His eyes were dark, possessive, but he didn't try to stop me. He understood the game now. This was not just revenge anymore. This w

  • Reborn After Betrayal: My Ex-husband Rival's Spoils Me    No Longer His Wife

"Who... who are you? And who is Daniel?"I watched Alexander's face in the dim hospital light. He had just woken up, his black hair slightly messy from sleeping in the chair, his shirt creased. For a man who looked like he owned half of Manhattan, he looked surprisingly human right now.His eyes - those sharp, cold eyes that everyone at Foster Jewelry was afraid of searched my face with a worry that felt too personal."You don't remember again?" he asked softly, standing up. He didn't come closer. He gave me space, and I hated how much I appreciated that. Daniel never gave me space. He just took.I shook my head, letting my lip tremble. It was surprisingly easy to act broken when you had just been broken for real. "I had a dream... a scary dream where everyone was lying to me. A man said he was my husband but he was with another woman. And a little boy... a little boy called that woman Mommy. It felt so real."Alexander's jaw tightened. I could see a muscle jumping there."It wasn't a
