The coffee cup felt warm between Maya's hands, a stark contrast to the cold hatred that settled in her chest the moment Adrian walked into the café.

In her past life, Maya had spent every spare moment pleasing Adrian and his family. She had cooked, cleaned, and handed over her savings, only to be pushed into a pack of rabid monsters while Adrian and Vanessa locked the door and laughed.

When Maya returned thirty days before the apocalypse with her spatial dimension intact and her $120 million inheritance unlocked, her first instinct had been to hide—to immediately buy a fortress, raise the drawbridge, and cut off the world.

But as she sat quietly in Sector 4's Café Flore, a colder realization had taken root.

A fortress was a cage if you built it out of fear. If she hid away right now, she would spend her remaining pre-apocalypse days looking over her shoulder. She didn't need to run from Adrian. She needed him to come looking for trouble—completely convinced that his old tricks of emotional manipulation still worked—so she could crush his ego for good.

When the café door chimed, Maya didn't flinch.

Adrian walked in like he owned the place, smoothing the cuffs of his jacket. He had spent the last two days trying to contact her after being kicked out of the penthouse and losing his sedan key.

"Maya," Adrian said, stepping into her space with practiced charm and sliding into the leather booth opposite her. "You look tired, sweetheart."

It was his standard opening move: pretend to care while subtly trying to make her feel weak and unstable.

"Adrian," Maya replied, placing her cup down without making a sound. "What do you want?"

"I came here to give you a chance to explain yourself," Adrian said, leaning across the table with fake pity. "You threw my mother into the rain. You took my car keys. I know you're overwhelmed by everything going on, but acting out like a child isn't going to solve anything."

He reached across the table, extending his hand to cover hers—a gesture meant to force submission.

Maya didn't pull back. She looked down at his hand, feeling absolutely nothing. In the past, that touch would have made her feel guilty. Now, it felt like touching cold plastic.

"You think I'm acting out, Adrian?" she asked softly.

"I know you are," he murmured, fixing her with an intense, manipulative stare. "You're hurt because I haven't proposed yet. But we can put all of this behind us. If you apologize to my mother, buy her medicine, and give me back the car, I'll forget about the scene you made at the hotel."

It was a masterclass in gaslighting. In under two minutes, he had rewritten history: his parasitic leeching was forgotten, and her self-preservation was labeled a "temper tantrum."

Maya slowly slid her fingers out from under his palm.

"I didn't leave because I was hurt, Adrian," she said, her voice clear and ice-cold. "I left because I finally saw what a pathetic coward you are."

Adrian's smile tightened. "Maya—"

"You came here today because you thought I was terrified of you," Maya continued smoothly. "You thought if you caught me alone, you could manipulate me back into being your unpaid servant."

She leaned back in the booth, crossing her arms.

"You have no power over me," Maya said, looking straight into his eyes. "You only had power when I believed you cared about me. Now that I see you clearly, you're just a broke, arrogant leech telling small lies."

Adrian's face flushed a deep crimson as his composure completely cracked. "You think you can survive without me?! You're an orphan with no family! You'll come crawling back on your knees begging me when you run out of money!"

Maya didn't flinch. She watched his desperate outburst with complete detachment.

She picked up her bag, placed a twenty-dollar bill on the table, and stood up.

"Keep the change, Adrian," she said softly. "You're going to need it."

She turned her back on him and walked out into the afternoon air. As she stepped into her waiting vehicle, she rested a gentle hand over her lower belly, feeling the faint, quiet beat of her baby's life.

She didn't need to hide yet. She was going to spend every remaining day building her wealth and watching Adrian sink deeper into ruin.

The heavy autumn rain turned the pristine glass facade of the Sovereign Heights Residential Tower into a blurred silver sheet. Located in Sector 4’s most affluent district, the high-rise was a monument to luxury—and for the last two years, every single cent of its $8,500 monthly rent had come directly from Maya’s sweat and blood. In her past life, Maya had lived in a cramped, drafty studio apartment near the industrial docks while funding this exact four-bedroom penthouse for Adrian, his ungrateful mother Beatrice, and eventually, his mistress Vanessa. Beatrice had claimed her "weak heart" couldn't handle low-rise air quality, while Adrian had insisted he needed a prestigious address to "build corporate connections."Maya stepped out of the rear passenger seat of a black, bulletproof armored SUV.She wore a sleek dark leather trench coat, her black hair pulled back into a high, flawless ponytail. She had thought modesty and submission would earn her love. It had only earned her a push into a pack of hungry monsters. Not anymore. The grand marble archways of the Grand Sovereign Hotel glistened under warm crystal chandeliers. It was the premier venue in Sector 4, where corporate tycoons and high-society elites gathered to negotiate multi-million-dollar deals over vintage champagne.Maya glided through the revolving glass doors, her heels clicking rhythmically against the polished stone. She wore a tailored white wool coat over a simple black dress—outfits she had bought years ago and kept tucked away for special occasions. The emerald jade ring hung heavily against her collarbone beneath her coat, pulsing with a faint, reassuring warmth. At a private corner table in the lounge sat three men in immaculate charc

The last thing Maya felt was the jagged snap of her collarbone beneath the weight of a rotting, rabid jaw.She remembered the freezing rain blinding her vision, the slick asphalt burning against her torn knees, and the iron reek of human blood pouring down the gutters of Sector 4. She remembered clutching that tiny black medical pouch to her chest like a sacred relic—the medicine she had crawled through hell to retrieve for Adrian’s dying mother. And, above all, she remembered the smooth, pristine surface of Adrian’s metal door. The way it clicked open just enough for his hand to snatch the pouch from her trembling fingers. The soft silk robe wrapped around Vanessa as she stepped into view, a glass of wine held casually between her manicured fingers. And the cold, calculated weight of Adrian’s hand planted square against Maya’s shoulder.“Meet the love of my life, Vanessa. You were really useful right up to the end.”Then came the push. The fall. The sound of his door slamming shut an
