Lila's POV

The closer we came to my home, the tighter my fingers curled around Elias's.

I hadn't realized how much I dreaded seeing the house again until its familiar gates appeared at the end of the street.

The guards had secured the property. Two stood outside the entrance, while several others moved around the garden, examining the ground and speaking quietly among themselves. The gate that had been left open earlier was now firmly shut.

Lila's POVThe closer we came to my home, the tighter my fingers curled around Elias's.I hadn't realized how much I dreaded seeing the house again until its familiar gates appeared at the end of the street. The guards had secured the property. Two stood outside the entrance, while several others moved around the garden, examining the ground and speaking quietly among themselves. The gate that had been left open earlier was now firmly shut.Everything looked almost normal. That was the worst part. The flowers were still blooming along the pathway. The curtains still hung behind the windows, and the front door had been closed. Anyone passing by might have thought nothing unusual had happened here. But I knew better. My mother had nearly died inside that house.Elias noticed my hesitation.“We don't have to go in if you're not ready.”I looked at the doorway.“I need to see what they found.”He didn't try to persuade me otherwise. He simply kept hold of my hand as we approached.Inside,

Lila's POVI didn't know when I had stopped crying. One moment, I was clinging to Elias as though he was the only thing keeping me from drowning, and the next, I was sitting beside him with my face buried against his shoulder, too exhausted to produce another tear.My head hurts. My throat felt raw, and my eyes burned every time I blinked.I couldn't remember the last time I had felt so utterly helpless.Elias hadn't moved away.He sat beside me on the bed, one hand resting over mine while the other occasionally brushed the hair away from my face.He hadn't tried to fill the silence with empty promises, and I was grateful for that. I wasn't sure I could bear hearing someone tell me everything would be fine when none of us knew whether it would be.My mother was still somewhere in this palace, fighting for her life. And I was doing nothing. The thought made my stomach twist."I should be with her."My voice sounded strange, almost unfamiliar after hours of barely speaking.Elias looked

Lila’s POVThe last thing I remembered clearly was the blood. It was everywhere. On the floor beneath my mother. On the front of her blouse. On the hand that had once held mine whenever I was frightened as a child. After that, everything became a blur.I remembered Elias calling for help. The sound of hurried footsteps, the arrival of guards, and someone kneeling beside my mother to check whether she was still breathing.I remembered being asked something, though I couldn't recall what. I remembered Elias answering for me when I couldn't seem to make my mouth work. And I remembered him lifting me away when the healers arrived.I hadn't wanted to leave her.I didn't know if I had said it aloud or merely thought it, but I remembered fighting against the hands guiding me away from her.I remembered the desperate need to stay beside her, as though my presence alone could keep her from slipping away.Someone told us she was alive.Barely.That was the word that had followed me all the way

Lila’s POVWe were nearing my house when I noticed the gate.It was open. Not slightly ajar, as it sometimes was when my mother had gone into the garden to water the plants. It stood wide open, one side pushed inward as though someone had forced their way through without bothering to close it afterward. My steps slowed.Something about the sight unsettled me.My mother was careful about the gate. She always made certain it was shut, especially when I wasn't home. After Victor's recent visit and the threats he had made about the house, she had become even more particular about securing the property. She would never leave it like this. Not without a reason.“Lila?”Elias was still speaking, but his voice seemed to come from somewhere far away.I stared at the open gate. The garden beyond it looked undisturbed at first glance. The familiar shrubs stood along the stone path, and the curtains inside the house were drawn. Nothing appeared broken from where I stood.Yet the unease in my stom

Lila’s POVI was beginning to suspect that spending time with Elias was becoming a habit.A dangerous one, certainly. An inconvenient one, without question. But a habit nonetheless. We had barely left the restaurant when he began telling me about the rest of his day, as though we had been doing this for years instead of stumbling into an uncertain arrangement neither of us had bothered to define.“I have a meeting with my father and the council before noon,” he said, walking beside me with his hands tucked into the pockets of his coat. “Then, I have to review the reports from the western territories. There are complaints about trade routes, a dispute between two pack leaders, and a rather lengthy document concerning the reconstruction of the northern watchtower.”I glanced at him. “That sounds terrible.”“It is.”“You're the Crown Prince. Surely you're used to it.”“Being used to something doesn't make it less terrible.”I laughed under my breath. He looked at me with an expression of

Lila’s POVFor a few minutes, we ate in relative peace.Or at least, we would have, if Nate and Drake had possessed even a fraction of the ability to remain silent."So," Nate began, leaning back in his chair, "what have you been doing lately, Lila?""Working on a few things.""What sort of things?""Personal matters.""Very mysterious.""Very private," Broody corrected."Thank you, Broody.""Don't thank him," Drake said. "He enjoys being right.""I enjoy silence," Broody replied. "Yet here you are."Nate waved a hand. "Ignore him. He was born grumpy.""And you were born without a sense of self-preservation.""That's what makes life exciting."I shook my head, smiling despite myself. Then, Drake glanced at me."You're awfully quiet." He observed.I opened my mouth to answer, but Elias spoke first."She didn't sleep well."My head snapped toward him.Excuse me?Nate's eyes widened with immediate interest while Drake's eyebrows rose. Even Broody looked up from his plate.I could feel my
