"To new beginnings, and bulletproof prenups," Frederick said, his voice dripping with pure, unadulterated smugness.

He tapped his crystal champagne flute against Rose’s. The delicate chime rang clearly through the sunlit, impeccably decorated living room of their secret Crestview mansion.

Rose let out a melodic, mocking laugh, taking a long sip. She leaned back against the plush velvet sofa, running a hand through her perfectly styled hair. "Honestly, Frederick, I was terrified yesterday. I thought she was going to leave us on the street."

"Kacey is a workaholic, Rose, not a genius," Frederick sneered, adjusting the cuffs of his silk shirt. "She was too busy staring at quarterly projections to notice I was draining the subsidiary accounts for four years. She took the company, sure. But we walked away with five million in untraceable cash and a six-million-dollar estate in the most exclusive zip code in the city. Let her have her pathetic little tantrum."

"It really is sad," Rose sighed, her lips curling into a wicked smile. "I heard she panic-sold her company to Gordon Pierce for half its worth. She ruined her own empire just to get away from us. She is probably crying in a hotel room right now, realizing she is all alone."

A sudden, violently loud blast of a air horn shattered the peaceful morning.

Frederick jumped, spilling champagne down the front of his silk shirt. "What the hell is that?"

The manicured silence of Oakwood Lane was instantly pulverized by the deafening, earth-shaking roar of heavy diesel engines. The floorboards of their mansion actually vibrated.

Rose gasped, rushing to the massive bay window. "Frederick! Look!"

Frederick stormed over, wiping his shirt. His jaw dropped.

A fleet of eight massive, blacked-out demolition bulldozers and transport trucks was rolling aggressively onto the pristine, emerald lawn of the estate directly across the street. The elegant iron gates of the neighboring property had already been torn down.

Parked right in the center of the chaos, gleaming under the morning sun, was Kacey’s midnight-black sports car.

Kacey stepped out, her designer coat catching the wind. She didn't look like a woman mourning her marriage. She looked radiant, lethal, and entirely in control.

Beside her stood a man who looked completely out of place in the neighborhood of tech billionaires and old money. He was toweringly tall, his shoulders broad and corded with thick muscle beneath a fitted black tactical shirt. Faint, jagged scars lined his forearms. He held a steel clipboard, but his dark, predatory eyes were locked intensely on Kacey.

"Are you sure about these blueprints, Ms. Winston?" Forrest Noah’s voice was a low, gravelly rumble that easily cut through the noise of the idling engines. "You are asking for twenty-inch thick, titanium-reinforced steel walls. You want an independent, closed-loop geothermal grid, blast-proof retractable shutters, and a military-grade water filtration matrix."

"I am paying your firm double your highest premium, Mr. Forrest," Kacey replied coolly, her eyes scanning the massive property. "I expect precision, and I expect it finished in exactly two months."

Noah smirked, a slow, dangerous expression that transformed his rugged face. "I run a black-ops engineering firm, Ms. Winston. We build fallout shelters for paranoid dictators and underground armories for private militaries. I can build it. But this isn't a luxury remodel. You are building a fortress designed to withstand the end of the world. What exactly do you know that I don't?"

Kacey finally turned to look at him, meeting his dark, calculating gaze without flinching. The chemistry between them crackled, sharp and instantaneous.

"A complete paradigm shift is coming, Mr. Forrest," Kacey whispered, her tone carrying the chilling weight of a woman who had already died once. "Can you deliver my sanctuary, or should I hire someone else?"

Noah stepped closer. The absolute authority radiating from her was intoxicating. "Demolition of the existing structure will be finished by noon. We pour the reinforced concrete tonight."

"Kacey!"

The furious, sneering shout echoed across the asphalt.

Kacey did not even turn her head. She kept her eyes on Noah as Frederick marched across the street, his face flushed red with arrogance, Rose trailing closely behind him with a smug, mocking smile.

"Following us now, Kacey?" Frederick barked, stopping at the edge of her new property. He crossed his arms, looking her up and down with deep disdain. "Are you really that desperate? You panic-sell your own company for pennies, and now you're stalking us?"

"It is just pathetic, Kacey," Rose chimed in, her voice artificially sweet and venomous. "We know you are hurting, but buying the house across the street to spy on us? You are embarrassing yourself. We won, Kacey. Just move on with your life before you look even more unhinged."

Kacey slowly turned to face them. She looked at the two people who had once locked her out in the freezing snow and watched her die.

She didn't scream. She didn't cry. She just smiled. It was a terrifying, hollow smile that made the hairs on the back of Frederick’s neck stand up.

"Spy on you?" Kacey laughed softly. "Frederick, you overestimate your own worth. I bought this lot because it has the highest elevation in the city and sits directly on a stable bedrock fault line. You two just happen to be the local pest infestation."

Frederick’s face contorted in rage. "You arrogant bitch, you think you can just—"

He took an aggressive step toward Kacey.

He didn't make it to the second step.

Noah moved with a speed that defied his massive size. He didn't throw a punch. He simply stepped directly into Frederick's path, his broad chest entirely blocking Kacey from view. Noah looked down at Frederick with eyes as cold and dead as shattered glass.

"The lady is conducting private business on private property," Noah said. His voice was barely above a whisper, but it carried a promise of immediate, extreme violence. "Take one more step toward her, and I will shatter your jaw in three places."

Frederick froze, all the blood draining from his face. He looked at Noah’s scarred arms and the absolute lack of hesitation in his eyes. He swallowed hard, stumbling backward and bumping into Rose.

"You're insane, Kacey," Frederick stammered, his voice pitching high with cowardice. "You're surrounding yourself with thugs! You're going to bankrupt yourself building whatever this garbage is!"

"Let's go, Frederick," Rose muttered nervously, tugging at his sleeve and refusing to make eye contact with Noah. "She isn't worth our time. We have a beautiful home to enjoy."

"Exactly," Frederick sneered, desperately trying to salvage his pride as he backed away. "Enjoy your little construction site, Kacey. We'll be inside, drinking champagne."

Kacey watched them retreat across the street, her smile widening into something truly sinister.

"Enjoy it while it lasts," Kacey murmured softly, the freezing apocalyptic wind from her memories already howling in her mind.

Noah stepped back to her side, watching the pathetic couple scurry into their mansion. He looked back down at Kacey, his interest entirely piqued. "Enemies of yours?"

"Just future corpses," Kacey replied casually, turning her attention back to the blueprints. "Now, Mr. Forrest. Let us discuss the thermal insulation for the viewing deck. I want to make sure my windows remain perfectly clear when the temperature outside drops to fifty below zero."

Frederick paced the length of his lavish executive office, his hands pulling frantically at his perfectly styled hair. The morning sun poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows, but he felt freezing cold."She has the video, Rose," Frederick stammered, his voice cracking with pure panic. "She has the video. Do you understand what that means? The morality clause! The prenuptial agreement is airtight!"Rose sat on the edge of the leather sofa, aggressively biting her thumbnail. Her perfectly applied makeup from yesterday was long gone, leaving her looking hollow and frantic. "Frederick, calm down. Kacey is emotional right now. If you just talk to her, maybe bring her some flowers—""Flowers?" Frederick whirled around, his face pale and slick with nervous sweat. "Are you out of your mind? You saw her eyes last night. • Reborn As The Apocalypse Queen   The Day I Died

"Please. Frederick , please open the door." Kacey’s voice was a ragged, broken wheeze. She slammed her frostbitten, bleeding fists against the reinforced polycarbonate glass of the bunker. The apocalyptic blizzard howled behind her, tearing at her emaciated body. The global temperature had plummeted to fifty below zero. Every ragged breath felt like inhaling shattered glass, freezing her lungs from the inside out. Her skin was turning a sickly, mottled purple, and she could no longer feel her legs. On the other side of the impenetrable door stood Frederick , her husband of four years, and Rose, her best friend since college. They were bathed in the warm, golden light of the bunker’s entryway. Both of them were wrapped comfortably in plush cashmere sweaters. Frederick swirled a glass of expensive red wine, a mocking smirk resting on his handsome face. He leaned toward the silver intercom panel on the wall. "You always were too loud, Kacey," Frederick ’s voice crackled through the e
