Nicole arrived at the lawyer's office at eleven forty-five, fifteen minutes before the deadline.

Evelyn was already seated beside her lawyer when he entered. He looked irritated, his expensive watch flashing beneath the office lights as he dropped into the chair opposite her.

“You couldn't handle this privately?” he demanded.

Evelyn didn't look up from the documents in front of her. “We're handling it privately. That's why we're in a lawyer's office instead of arguing on social media.”

The tremor lasted only a few seconds, but nobody inside the maintenance building moved until the walls stopped shaking.Evelyn watched the ceiling seam. A thin line of dust had fallen from it, but the crack had not visibly widened.“Everyone away from the windows,” she instructed. “Keep the exits clear.”Damien's team checked the interior walls and doorframes. They found no immediate sign of structural failure, though nobody could guarantee the building would remain safe if another strong tremor struck.“We need an alternative,” Damien said when he returned. “The storm has damaged several roofs around this compound. We can't keep moving people from one building to another without knowing what we're walking into.”Evelyn agreed. They needed a location with open ground, but the wind made exposed areas dangerous. The best option was a sturdy structure surrounded by enough space to keep people away from falling walls, trees, and power lines.A volunteer who had worked nearby before the di

The next gust hit before they could agree on where to go.The shelter roof groaned. A sharp metallic screech followed as another section of gutter tore loose, striking the ground outside. People screamed and crowded away from the entrance.“Stop pushing!” Evelyn shouted. “There is room for everyone if you move in order.”Damien and his team cleared a path through the room, directing people toward the rear exit. Evelyn checked the area beyond it through a narrow window. The exit opened onto a small paved courtyard bordered by low walls, with no tall trees or visibly damaged buildings immediately beside it.It was not ideal, but it offered a safer route away from the failing awning.“We move through the courtyard and follow the inner path,” she said. “No one goes toward the main road until we've checked it.”Damien nodded and sent two volunteers ahead to inspect the passage. They returned quickly, confirming that the gate was open and the path clear of fallen cables. The evacuation bega

Evelyn went through the names of everyone who had entered the shelter. The missing woman was not among them. Her husband, a thin man named Michael, paced near the wall, repeatedly looking toward the entrance. Every time the wind struck the building, he flinched.“She was helping an elderly couple,” he said. “I came inside with the children. I thought she was right behind me.”“Did you see which direction she went?”“Toward the western gate.”Evelyn turned to Damien. “We need to check whether the elderly couple made it inside. They may know where she went.”Damien called two volunteers over and described the couple. One recognized them immediately. They had arrived shortly before the worst of the storm, but neither had seen Michael's wife.Michael pressed both hands against his face.“I should have waited for her.”“Blaming yourself won't bring her back,” Evelyn said. “We need information before we decide what to do.”She asked everyone who had entered from the western side whether the

The wind grew strong enough to send people scrambling for cover.A plastic canopy tore free from its supports and skidded across the sports field. Evelyn ducked as one corner flew past her shoulder, then shouted for the volunteers to stop trying to hold the remaining canopy upright.“Leave it! Get everyone away from the poles!”They moved quickly, guiding families toward the open concrete shelter beside the field's changing rooms. The shelter was a low structure with a solid roof, but Evelyn did not allow anyone to crowd beneath its outer awning. She had seen what falling metal could do, and she refused to let panic decide where people stood.Damien helped move the elderly residents first. His staff carried the medical bags and blankets while other volunteers led children in small groups.A hard gust struck the shelter's entrance. Dust swept through the field, stinging Evelyn's eyes. She pulled her scarf over her nose and checked that the people behind her had followed. Then came the

By late afternoon, Evelyn realized they could not keep everyone on the sports field much longer. The injured needed proper treatment. Children were hungry, elderly residents were growing weak, and the open ground offered little protection from the heat. Worse, the nearby buildings continued to shed pieces of concrete whenever the ground shifted.Damien had managed to organize several groups of volunteers, but their supplies were limited. The clinic had stopped accepting minor injuries, and the nearest hospital was unreachable by the usual roads.“We need transport,” one of his men reported. “The western route is open for now, but a fallen utility pole is blocking the eastern junction. We can't move a large vehicle through there.”“How many people need urgent medical attention?” Damien asked.“Seven that we know of. Two may have fractures.”Evelyn studied the rough map spread across a folding table. The western road connected to a smaller district with a health center. She remembered t

By midday, the sports field had become a temporary refuge for hundreds of people.Evelyn had stopped counting them. Every few minutes, another family arrived carrying whatever they had managed to save. Some came with suitcases. Others carried sleeping children, bags of clothes, or nothing at all.The injured rider had been moved to a nearby clinic after Damien's team confirmed that one side road remained passable. Two volunteers accompanied him, while the rest stayed behind to help the growing crowd.Evelyn was checking the route map when a woman hurried toward her.“My husband is trapped in our shop,” she said. “The building hasn't collapsed, but the entrance is blocked. Please, you have to help me.”Evelyn looked up. “Where is the shop?”“On the western road, near the old bus stop. He went back for our supplies after the first earthquake. Then the ground shook again.”A familiar weight settled in Evelyn's chest.People were already risking their lives for things they could replace.
