Chapter 5

Author: Harper
Three days after my weapons access was revoked, I threw up violently in the bathroom for the second time.

There was nothing left in my stomach, but the sour bile kept coming. I braced myself on the sink. The mirror showed me how pale I was.

In my last life, I never got pregnant.

At least, not before I died.

When the doctor at the private clinic slid the test results across the desk, I stared at the words "seven weeks pregnant," and it took a long time for the news to sink in.

"Ms. Moretti?" the doctor said gently.

I looked up. "Are you sure?"

"It's confirmed. The gestational sac is in the right place. But you've had some mild cramping lately, so you need to rest."

She glanced at my file. "Would you like us to let the father know?"

"No," I said before I could think.

Then I went quiet.

The report was one thin sheet of paper, but it weighed a ton. Five years of loving him and hating him came crashing down on me all at once.

Luca and I had come so close to having a real home.

Not an alliance between two powerful families. Not a grand engagement ceremony. Not a ring or a new last name.

Sitting down together for every meal. Someone waiting up for you to come home at night. A child of our own.

I folded the report carefully and tucked it into my bag.

When I got back to my apartment, Luca was already waiting in the living room. He was sitting on the couch with a paper bag at his feet.

"Where were you?"

I tensed up. "Just out. Walking around."

He studied me for a few seconds but didn't push. He waved me over. "Come here."

I walked over.

Luca took a motorcycle helmet out of the paper bag.

I went still.

It was the one I'd cracked when I crashed my bike a few months ago.

"Wasn't the shell wrecked?"

"I had the shell replaced and the whole lining redone."

He put the helmet in my hands.

My fingertips brushed the faint scratches along the side.

They were the original marks.

"You kept the old scratches?"

"You said this was the helmet you wore the day you beat me in that race, so you'd never throw it out." Luca's voice was even. "I had them preserve the original scratches."

My eyes stung.

He always remembered the little things.

He could remember an offhand comment for years. That was exactly why I'd once been so sure he loved me deeply.

Then Luca reached into the bottom of the bag and pulled out a pair of tiny riding gloves, the kind made for a little kid.

My breath caught.

"What are those?"

"The store packed them in by mistake."

He slipped the gloves onto two of his fingers, and for once, he actually smiled.

"Can you believe how small they are?"

I couldn't take my eyes off those gloves.

Luca said it like it was nothing. "If we ever have a daughter, the first thing I'm doing is locking up her motorcycle keys."

My throat closed up.

"What makes you so sure it'd be a girl?"

"A boy can run as wild as he wants."

"Why?"

"A boy falls down a couple of times and learns what pain is."

He raised his eyes to mine.

"But someone like you? You'd break your leg and still hit the throttle."

I should have argued with him.

But the report in my bag felt red-hot, and my fingers were already reaching for the zipper.

"Luca."

"Hm?"

"If we have a kid someday," I said, holding his gaze, "are you going to decide everything for her too?"

He thought I was still stuck on our argument about the motorcycle keys. Luca came closer and pressed a light kiss to my forehead.

"If she's as reckless with her life as you are, my first priority will be keeping her alive."

A small smile tugged at his lips.

"Then she can yell at me all she wants."

My heart tightened with a mix of tenderness and dull pain.

I came this close to telling him I was pregnant.

That was when his phone rang.

When he got off the call, Luca's face had gone hard again. "The seating for the engagement banquet is set."

"And?"

"Viola will sit at the Moretti family table."

I didn't say anything.

He kept going. "Also, your weapons access won't be restored until after the engagement. And she'll represent the Moretti women at the next two public family events."

I slowly looked up.

"Who decided that?"

"Antonio."

"And you agreed?"

Luca hesitated. "It's only temporary."

"Sure."

I gave him a bitter little smile.

"Temporary. Again."

"Isabella, you're my fiancée. Not her."

"I know."

I set my bag aside. In the end, I never took the report out.

Luca frowned, looking me over. "Are you not feeling well?"

"A little."

He reached out to feel my forehead.

"Do you have a fever?"

"No."

"Then I'll have the doctor come over."

"I'm going in tomorrow." I looked at him. "I already made the appointment."

Luca nodded and didn't ask anything else.

That night, after he left, I went into the bathroom and found a little blood on my underwear.

It wasn't much.

But a chill spread through my whole body, and I called the clinic right away.

The doctor told me to come in early the next day for a follow-up appointment. If the bleeding got heavier or the cramping got worse, I was to go straight to the ER.

I put the appointment time in my notes app. Then I sat alone on the edge of the bed and looked at the tiny riding gloves Luca had left behind.

I never planned to use the baby as a bargaining chip to make him take my side or love me more.

I just wanted to know one thing. Baby or no baby, when I asked him to trust me, could he really choose to stand with me?

I put the test report in the box with the gloves.

Everything came down to tomorrow's checkup.

If it all came back fine, maybe I would tell him the truth.

A year later, Matteo and I got married by the ocean in Lisbon. The wedding was nothing lavish, but it was lively. White roses lined the way from the terrace down to the sand, and the long tables were packed with all kinds of people: rivals we'd met at the track, regulars from the garage, neighbors from up and down the street. The band played from the afternoon until deep into the night. There was no rigid family seating chart. No one decided who had to sit at the head table. And no one told me ahead of time which aisle a bride was supposed to walk down.I wore a white wedding dress with a worn black leather motorcycle jacket over it, and I rode my bike to the wedding.I was still wearing the helmet Luca had repaired for me back then.Matteo had asked me a long time ago why I didn't just get a new one.At the time, I only said I was used to it. It wasn't until later that I could honestly admit it was more than habit.I didn't have to wipe out every trace of the past to prove I was compl

Our plane landed in the States. We didn't go back to the Moretti estate. Colin picked us up and drove us straight to the cemetery, where the relocation crew was already waiting. When my father came hurrying over, I barely recognized him. In just two years, his hair had gone white at the temples, and he looked old and worn down."Isabella." His voice was low and rough as he said my name.I didn't beat around the bush. I held a stack of paperwork out in front of him. "Everything's in order. Today, I'm taking my mother with me."My father went pale, and there was something pleading in his eyes. "Is there any way you could leave her here?""Give me a reason.""I've visited her grave often over the years, too."I looked at him for a long moment."Back when she was so sick she couldn't get out of bed, on all those nights she needed someone the most, where were you?"My father's mouth opened and closed, but he couldn't come up with anything to say for himself.Just then, Rosa and Viola showed

Six months after Luca left, Matteo and I still hadn't talked about marriage. We entered races together, and we argued nonstop about how to tune our bikes. He thought my setups were way too aggressive. I complained that his were too cautious, always playing it safe.Once, in the middle of an argument, he slammed his wrench down on the workbench."Fix it yourself, then.""Fine, I will."Half an hour later, I realized I was missing a key part.He poked his head out of his shop next door. "Need any tips from me?""Get lost."Little by little, life turned into something steady and real.No one came to rescue me, and I didn't have to keep proving to everyone that I'd put the old hurt behind me.What finally made me want Matteo in my future was a completely ordinary night. The owner of a new shop down the street stopped by, carrying a newborn and a cake to celebrate the grand opening. The baby was a tiny bundle, swaddled up and sound asleep. The moment I took the cake box, my fingers locked u

Matteo and I had already backed up all the garage's security footage, and we'd reported the suspicious car's license plate to the police. That evening, as we were closing up, the strange car came tearing around the corner, going the wrong way down the street.Matteo immediately pushed me inside."Get in!"At the same instant, another car shot out from a side street and cut the strange car off.I knew at a glance that Luca was behind the wheel.Luca used his car to force the other vehicle away from the garage. Then the gunfire started. At that exact moment, my phone rang. I answered it."Call the police now," Luca said, his voice steady. "Shut the shop door. I'll lead them away."I held the phone, and for a second, none of it felt real. Before, the thing he'd said most often was "Stick to my plan."Now he was telling me, "Use your own judgment.""Luca—""Don't come out." After a brief pause, he added, "Not unless you decide for yourself that you need to."The line went dead.Matteo pull

Luca didn't set foot on the track. He waited on the sidelines the whole time, until I walked over to him myself.Up close, I could see how worn down he was. There were dark shadows under his eyes, and he'd lost a lot of weight."What are you doing here?"He swallowed."I found out the whole truth."That was the first thing he said. The second was, "I'm sorry."I didn't accept the apology.Luca didn't fall into his old habits. He didn't start by telling me how worried he'd been or rush to tear into Viola. Instead, he laid everything out for me, plainly, one piece at a time: the convoy recordings, the OB-GYN appointment records, the range sensor logs, and the proof of how the ambush route had leaked.By the end, his voice had gone low and rough. "You told me you needed to go to the hospital."And I was the one who chose not to believe you."When he was done, I just nodded."So now the truth is out."But the baby we lost isn't coming back."And the engagement is over. That can't be undone

  • Reborn Before Our Engagement, I’m Done With My Mafia Husband   Chapter 10

During my first month in Lisbon, I hardly slept through a single night.Whenever a motorcycle roared on the street below, it jolted me awake. Whenever a car suddenly accelerated around a corner, I'd instinctively scan for cover. Whenever I passed a pregnant woman on the street, my gaze would go to her hands, then quickly shift away.No one was pushing me to pull myself together, and I couldn't be bothered to prove to anyone that I was over it.In my second month, I rented a run-down old motorcycle repair garage. The roll-up door kept jamming, the paint on the walls was peeling, and the floor was covered in oil stains. But I loved it.No Moretti family rules. No shadow of Bellini power hanging over me.I decided when to open and when to close. I could fix bikes however I pleased.Matteo Costa, who ran the shop next door, first spoke to me because I'd parked my bike in front of his place. He crouched by my back wheel and studied it for a long time."Your rear brake's wearing unevenly."I
