LOGIN“You fat ass, wake up.”
Clara heard the familiar voice calling her, followed by a rough shake against her shoulder.
Her eyes snapped open, and for several seconds, she could only stare at the ceiling above her, unable to understand what she was seeing.
The room was familiar.
The pale curtains, the bedside table, even the old crack running across the wall were exactly where she remembered them.
Her bedroom.
Clara's hands began to tremble as she touched her shoulder, almost expecting to feel the infected's teeth marks. There was nothing there.
Confusion overwhelmed her as she struggled to understand how she could be alive after everything that had happened.
For a terrifying moment, she wondered if she had somehow died and this was what came after death.
“I'm talking to you.” The voice made Clara freeze for a moment.
She slowly turned her head and saw Mark standing beside the bed.
Irritation rose inside her, but Clara didn't look away.
For years, she had lowered her head whenever Mark raised his voice. She had swallowed his insults, apologized when she had done nothing wrong, and convinced herself that keeping the peace was better than fighting back.
She simply stared at him, her expression hardening as resentment settled in her chest.
“What are you looking at?” Mark snapped. “Lower your gaze when I'm talking to you.”
Instead of answering, Clara turned her eyes toward the calendar hanging beside the door.
Her breath caught.
She stared at the date, then looked again, convinced that exhaustion had made her imagine it.
“No…” Her voice was barely a whisper.
She knew that date.
It was thirty days before the apocalypse.
How?
Then Clara remembered the final words she had whispered in the darkness, and her eyes widened as the realization struck her. Something had heard her. Something in that darkness had been listening.
Ding!
Clara froze.
A faint blue light flickered before her eyes. Then a transparent screen slowly materialized in the air.
[Apocalypse Survival System Activated.]
Every muscle in Clara's body locked. The words stumbled out before she could stop them.
“What are you?” she whispered.
What answered was a sharp jolt of pain across her face as Mark slapped her.
Her head snapped to the side, and a hot sting spread across her cheek.
“That’s to remind you who the boss is,” Mark said.
Clara slowly turned her face back toward him and stared at him without saying a word.
Then, with a calmness that seemed to surprise even her, she raised her hand and slapped him across the face.
The sound cracked through the room.
Mark froze, his eyes widening as he stared at her with one hand slowly rising to his cheek.
“Clara!”
She stepped closer, keeping her eyes fixed on his.
“Mark Thomas, the next time you lay a hand on me, I promise you’ll regret the day you were born.”
Silence settled over the room as Mark's mouth opened, yet no words came out. Clara didn't look away or lower her eyes. Her cheek was still burning from his slap, but she stood before him with a confidence he had never seen from her before.
For the first time, Mark seemed unsure of the woman standing in front of him.
The fire station came into view just before sunset. Clara watched it through the windshield as they drove along the familiar streets. After everything they had seen at the communications center, the sight of the station brought a brief sense of relief. They had made it back. But the feeling didn't last long. Her mind kept returning to everything they had discovered, the military transmissions, the BioGen facility, Genesis, and the infected they had fought inside the communications center.Stage Two.Clara tightened her grip on the steering wheel. She had spent most of her previous life believing she understood how the outbreak would unfold. She knew when things would become worse, when the infected would begin changing, and which threats would eventually appear. But this time, everything was happening differently. She didn't know how far ahead of her the new timeline had already moved, and that uncertainty frightened her more than she wanted to admit. The vehicle stopped inside the c
Clara leaned closer to the screen, barely blinking as the recording struggled to play. The sound came in broken pieces, buried beneath interference and bursts of distortion that made it difficult to understand what was being said.Derek adjusted one of the cables connected to the console.“Give it a second,” he said. The static suddenly cleared, and a man's voice came through the speakers.“...This is an emergency military transmission. Multiple containment zones have been breached.”Clara's eyes narrowed.Day three. She moved closer to the console, her attention fixed on the screen as the transmission continued.“Units are reporting unusual changes in infected behavior. Several infected have demonstrated increased speed and aggression. Some have also shown improved response to sound.”Clara's fingers slowly tightened around the edge of the desk.Improved response to sound. Her mind immediately returned to the infected they had just fought. She remembered the way one of them had sto
Clara kicked the door open. The first infected lunged through the doorway with enough force to shake the metal frame.Clara stepped aside as one of the survivors raised his weapon and fired. The bullet struck the infected in the chest, but instead of collapsing, it slammed into the wall, staggered for barely a second, then pushed itself upright.Clara's eyes widened.A shot to the body should have put it down. Before she could react, another infected rushed out of the room.Derek fired twice. The bullets struck its chest, forcing it backward, but it recovered almost immediately and charged again.“Back up!” Clara shouted. She swung her metal rod at its face. The blow knocked its head sideways, but the infected recovered far faster than she expected. It twisted toward her and swiped at her face.Clara raised her weapon just in time. The claws struck the metal with a sharp clang, the force driving her several steps backward. Her grip tightened as she realized how much force the creature
The large building stood behind a damaged security fence, its glass entrance partially shattered. Several emergency vehicles had been abandoned outside, their doors hanging open as if their occupants had left in a hurry.Clara's chest tightened. They had finally reached their destination.“Stop here,” she said. The driver brought the vehicle to a halt.Clara stared at the building for several seconds before turning toward the others.“Stay together,” she instructed. “We don't know what's inside.”Derek grabbed his weapon and stepped out of the vehicle.“I'll check the equipment room first,” he said.Clara nodded. “Stay close.”They approached the building carefully, their weapons ready. The main entrance had been damaged, but there were no bodies outside and no obvious signs of infected.Somehow, that made Clara even more nervous. She pushed the broken glass aside and stepped inside. The building was dark and silent.Rows of desks filled the main emergency station, many of them cover
The infected collapsed one after another as the survivors continued firing, their gunshots echoing between the abandoned buildings.“Keep shooting!” one of the men shouted.Another infected dropped onto the road, its body sliding across the asphalt before coming to a stop. Clara swung her metal rod into the head of another that had gotten too close, then quickly stepped back when two more rushed toward her.“Behind you!” Derek shouted.Clara turned just in time to see an infected lunging at her. She raised the rod and blocked its arms before driving her knee into its stomach. The creature staggered backward, giving one of the survivors enough time to fire a bullet into its head.“Got it!” the survivor shouted.Clara nodded, but she barely had time to catch her breath before another group of infected emerged from between the abandoned vehicles. Her stomach tightened. There were more of them now, and they were appearing faster than the survivors could bring them down.“There's too man
Clara woke before sunrise. For a moment, she remained still, staring into the darkness as the events of the previous day returned to her one after another. Clara pushed herself out of bed and reached for her clothes. She needed to leave before the station became too busy, especially when she still wasn't sure who she could trust. After dressing, she checked her weapons and opened her System Vault. She stored extra bullets inside, along with another metal rod in case she needed a second weapon during the mission. When Clara stepped outside, the compound was still quiet, with only a few survivors awake and preparing for the day. She approached the small group Marcus had been giving special training to.“I need a few people to come with me into the city,” Clara said. One of the men nodded. “Where are we going?”“The eastern side,” Clara replied. “I'll explain what we need when we get there.”She deliberately left out the real objective. The fewer people who knew about the communication
