Serena’s POV

My fingers locked around the glass mug so tightly the porcelain cracked.

UNKNOWN: I know you remember the rain, Serena. See you in thirty days.

The words burnt into my retina. The freezing rain. The locked steel door. The sound of claws tearing through sheet metal. Someone else knew. Someone else had survived or died beside me in that ruined timeline and returned with their memories intact.

Jonas? No. My mind raced through the possibilities, eliminating them with cold, analytical precision. Jonas was an arrogant narcissist, but he wasn't an actor capable of hiding that kind of knowledge behind a mundane text about business law outlines.

Leo McLauren? The shadowy strategist who had operated from the upper tiers in my past life. Or was it someone entirely new? an anomaly created by my regression?

"Serena?" Maya’s voice broke through the deafening roar in my ears. She was staring at my hand, her eyes wide with alarm. "Your coffee... you're going to break the cup!"

I swallowed the metallic taste of fear, forcing my hands to loosen. "Sorry," I muttered, setting the cracked mug onto the coaster with a steady hand. "Just... slipped."

I deleted the message, blocked the unknown number, and shoved the phone deep into my pocket. Paranoid panic was a luxury for people who had time to waste. Whoever this phantom was, they thought sending a cryptic message would freeze me in terror.

They were wrong. It only made me work faster.

By 1:00 PM, I had set my financial plan into motion.

Sitting in a corner booth at a quiet off-campus diner, my laptop screen flickered with confirmation pages. I applied for every instant personal loan available to a twenty two year old student, maxed out four credit cards, and drained my emergency savings. Within two hours, I had accumulated nearly forty five thousand dollars.

In thirty days, paper money would be worthless trash cluttering ruined streets. Right now, it bought survival.

I placed discreet orders for high-density composite body armor, Kevlar gloves, military grade water filtration units, tactical hatchets, and six months' worth of freeze-dried rations. I set the delivery destination to an industrial storage unit on the city's western periphery ,far enough from the downtown metro rifts, but accessible when the world broke.

My phone buzzed again. A text from Jonas:

JONAS COLE: Serena? Where are you? The study group has been waiting for forty minutes. You said you’d bring the outlines.

I stared at his name, my expression unreadable. In my past life, I would have apologized, grabbed my notes, and run across campus so Jonas could pass his exams without lifting a finger.

I closed the laptop, stood up, and headed toward the university. It was time to clear the board.

The university courtyard was flooded with afternoon sunlight. Students laughed on the lawn, drank iced coffees, and debated midterm topics, completely unaware that in four weeks, this peaceful campus would become a mass grave.

As I approached the administrative building to submit my formal withdrawal paperwork, a familiar silhouette detached itself from a group near the fountain and jogged over to intercept me.

Jonas Cole.

He wore a stylish jacket, his hair neatly combed, sporting the same bright, trustworthy smile that had coaxed dozens of desperate survivors into fatal traps.

"Serena! There you are," Jonas said, stepping directly into my path. He forced a look of gentle concern. "I tried calling you. Is everything okay? You missed the study session."

Looking at him standing here unblemished, warm, untouched by blood or rain, sent a wave of icy adrenaline through my nerves. Every combat instinct screamed at me to close the gap, crush his larynx, and take my revenge right here on the grass.

My knuckles twitched inside my coat pockets. But I forced my pulse down. Killing him now meant prison before the apocalypse even began.

"I was busy," I said, my voice flat and devoid of warmth.

Jonas blinked, caught off guard. Usually, I was soft spoken, accommodating, and quick to reassure him. He forced a light laugh. "Busy? Serena, the midterm is on Tuesday. We need those outlines. You know how important this grade is for my internship."

My outlines. My labor. He had always viewed me as an asset to harvest.

"I didn't finish them," I said, meeting his eyes directly. "And I won't be finishing them."

Jonas's smile flickered, a split second flash of annoyance breaking through his charm before he covered it up. "What do you mean? You promised to help us. We’re supposed to stick together, remember?"

Stick together. The hypocrisy tasted like ash.

"I'm withdrawing from the university, Jonas," I said calmly. "I won't be coming to classes, and I won't be helping your study group."

"Withdrawing?" Jonas stared at me in total shock, his voice rising. "Are you out of your mind? You have a 3.9 GPA! You're throwing your degree away over what? A bad mood?" He reached out, his hand moving to grab my forearm in a patronizing hold. "Serena, come on. Let's sit down and talk—"

Before his fingers could touch my jacket, I shifted my footing.

It was a minimal, flawless execution of combat spacing. I slipped out of his reach, my grey eyes locking onto his with an intensity so dark, so predatory, that Jonas froze mid step.

The air between us felt suddenly freezing. Jonas swallowed hard, an involuntary shudder running through his shoulders. For one brief second, he didn't see a quiet classmate; he saw something dangerous.

"Do not touch me, Jonas," I whispered, each word sharp as a razor. "And do not contact me again."

I turned on my heel and walked away, leaving him standing alone in the middle of the crowded quad, gaping in silence.

By 6:00 PM, my withdrawal was processed, the storage unit lease was signed, and I stood in the middle of a rented private combat conditioning room on the edge of town.

The room was equipped with heavy bags, pull-up rigs, and free weights. I pulled off my sweater, revealing a black tank top, and faced the wall mirror. My arms were slender, my core soft, my breathing slightly elevated from just climbing the stairs. This body was far too frail to handle Tier-1 beasts, let alone whatever regressed entity was stalking me from the shadows.

"If my physical vessel breaks, Devouring won't save me," I muttered.

I set a timer for two hours and began.

Weighted squats until my thighs burned like fire. Explosive push-ups, core stability planks, and relentless striking drills against the heavy bag. Every impact against the leather echoed the horrors of my past life: the cold rain, the locked door, the tearing of metal.

Faster. Stronger. Harder.

When my lungs burned and sweat drenched my forehead, I forced my body through twenty more reps. I dropped to my knees twice, gasping for oxygen, but dragged myself back up every time.

As the timer hit zero, a bright crimson interface window expanded in front of my face:

*REGRESSION QUEST PROGRESS UPDATE*

*TASK: PHYSICAL FITNESS LEVEL 1*

*PROGRESS: 15% -> 22%*

*STAT BOOST APPLIED: +1 STAMINA, +1 AGILITY*

Warning: High physical strain detected. User muscle density is adapting to Temporal Muscle Memory.

A warm, invigorating current flooded through my limbs, melting away the buildup of lactic acid in seconds. My lungs expanded freely, and my muscles felt denser, far more responsive.

I wiped the sweat from my eyes, staring at my reflection. Cold, sharp, unyielding.

Suddenly, the smart lock on the private gym's front door gave a sharp electronic click.

Unlocking.

I hadn't reserved the room past 8:00 PM, but the facility was supposed to be completely automated and empty.

I stepped back silently, my newly boosted agility kicking in as I picked up a heavy steel weight plate from the rack, my thumb tracing its edge.

The heavy reinforced door swung open slowly.

A tall man stepped into the room. Broad shoulders, tan skin, black hair, and a dark leather jacket over a tactical shirt. A jagged scar ran along his right forearm.

My breath caught in my throat. Jackson Hale.

In my past life, he was the elite, shadow stepping security contractor who worked alone because he believed groups were a death sentence. But right now, thirty days before the System was supposed to exist, he wasn't wearing casual civilian clothes. He was wearing a concealed tactical holster under his jacket, and his dark eyes swept the room with the practiced speed of a trained killer.

His gaze locked directly onto mine.

Jackson didn't look confused. He didn't look like a customer who walked into the wrong room. He reached inside his jacket, pulled out a sleek silver device that scrambled the room's surveillance cameras, and let the heavy door slam shut behind him.

"Serena Blake," Jackson said, his voice low, gravelly, and entirely calm. "You're a hard person to track down."
