Chapter 3: Divorce

Julian stared at me for a long moment. I could see the wheels turning behind his cold, calculating eyes, trying to figure out what game I was playing and why I had suddenly decided to give him exactly what he'd been asking for all these years. He leaned back in his expensive leather chair, steepling his fingers together in that arrogant way he always did whenever he thought he had the upper hand. A slow, mocking smile spread across his handsome face that made my blood boil with barely contained rage.

"Elara, Elara, Elara," he said, his voice dripping with condescension like honey laced with poison. He shook his head slowly, as if I were a child who had said something amusing and foolish. "What has gotten into you this morning? Did you hit your head while I wasn't looking? Because the woman standing in front of me right now is not the same woman who has been begging me to love her for the past seven years. I must admit, I am both confused and slightly entertained by this sudden change of heart."

I did not let the pain of his mockery show on my face, because I had already died once, already felt the worst pain a person can feel, and nothing he said to me now would ever hurt as much as watching him choose another woman over me while the world burned around us. I kept my expression neutral, my voice steady, and I met his gaze without looking away.

"I am not playing games with you, Julian," I said, my voice calm, measured, completely devoid of the desperation that used to color every word I spoke to him. "I have finally come to my senses. I have finally realized that I have been wasting my time and my love on a man who never deserved either of them. You have been asking for a divorce for years, and I was foolish enough to refuse because I thought somehow, someday, you might see me and love me the way I loved you. But I know now that will never happen, because you are incapable of loving anyone but yourself, and I am done waiting for a miracle that is never going to come."

Julian's smile faltered for just a moment. I saw a flicker of something dark and dangerous pass through his eyes, but he recovered quickly, and his mask of amused indifference slid back into place like it had never slipped at all. He picked up the divorce papers from his desk and examined them with a casual disinterest that made me want to scream, but I forced myself to stay calm, because getting angry would only give him the satisfaction he was so desperately seeking.

"You know, Elara," he said, tapping the papers against his palm thoughtfully, his voice taking on a mocking, playful tone that made my skin crawl with disgust. "I have been trying to get you to sign these papers for three years now. Every single time I brought them up, you would cry, beg, promise to change, to be better, to be whatever I wanted you to be. It was honestly pathetic to watch. I started to think you would never give up, that you would cling to this marriage like a drowning woman clinging to a piece of driftwood in the middle of the ocean. But now, suddenly, out of nowhere, you walk into my office and drop the papers on my desk like it's nothing, like seven years of marriage mean absolutely nothing to you. I have to admit, I am curious about what changed, because this is not the Elara I know, and I find that both intriguing and deeply suspicious."

My hands curled into fists at my sides. I had to take a deep breath to stop myself from slapping that smug, condescending look right off his handsome face, because I had never wanted to hurt someone as badly as I wanted to hurt him in this very moment. But I reminded myself that violence would not help me achieve my goals. I needed to stay focused on what really mattered: getting out of this marriage with as much money and resources as possible, so I could prepare for the apocalypse that was coming for all of us.

"I have finally realized that you are not worth my tears or my time or my love," I said, my voice coming out harder than I intended, "I have spent seven years of my life trying to be the woman you wanted me to be, and I have nothing to show for it except a broken heart and a mountain of regrets. But I am done with that now, Julian. I am done with you. I am done with this marriage. I am ready to move on with my life without you dragging me down like a stone around my neck."

Julian laughed, the sound cold, hollow, completely devoid of any genuine humor. He tossed the divorce papers back onto his desk like they were nothing more than worthless scraps.

"I do not believe you," he said, crossing his arms over his chest, "I have seen you cry and beg and grovel for my attention too many times to believe that you have suddenly grown a backbone overnight. This is a game, Elara, and I do not know what you are trying to achieve, but I am not going to play along with whatever scheme you have cooked up in that little head of yours. So why don't you take your papers and go home. We can pretend this little outburst never happened, and you can go back to being the pathetic, desperate wife I have always known you to be."

I felt something inside me snap at his words. I stepped closer to his desk and slammed my palms down on the table with so much force that the papers and pens and other objects on his desk jumped and rattled from the impact. Julian's eyes widened in genuine surprise, because I had never raised my voice at him, never slammed my hands on anything in his presence, and I had certainly never looked at him with the kind of cold, burning fury I was directing at him right now.

"I am not playing a game," I said, my voice low, dangerous. I leaned forward until my face was inches from his, "I am not pretending. I am not scheming. I am finally telling you the truth, Julian. The truth is that I am done with you. I am done with your cruelty, your manipulation, your complete and utter inability to love anyone but yourself. You have been asking for a divorce for years, and I am finally giving you what you want. If you do not sign these papers right now, I will make your life a living hell."

Julian laughed again, but this time his laughter was tinged with nervousness, and he tried to mask his discomfort by leaning back in his chair, affecting an air of casual indifference that did not quite reach his eyes.

"And what exactly are you going to do, Elara?" he asked, his voice trying to be mocking, but there was a slight tremor in it he could not quite hide. "What could you possibly do to make my life a living hell? You are nothing, Elara. You have no power, no influence, no connections that I do not control. You are a nobody. You have always been a nobody, and nothing you say or do will ever change that."

I smiled. It was not a warm smile, not a kind smile, but a cold, dangerous smile that made Julian's eyes narrow with suspicion and unease.

"You know what, Julian? You are right about one thing," I said, leaning back from his desk, crossing my arms over my chest, "I do not have power or influence or connections I can use against you. But I do have something else, something I think you will find much more valuable than any of those things. I have secrets, Julian. Secrets about you and your mistress and your secret child, and I know you would do absolutely anything to keep those secrets from becoming public knowledge."

Julian's face went pale. I saw fear flicker in his eyes for the first time, fear that told me I had finally found the leverage I needed to make him do what I wanted.

"I do not know what you are talking about," he said, but his voice was strained .

I let out a cold laugh, shaking my head slowly, watching him squirm in his chair as I delivered the final blow that would shatter his carefully constructed facade of control.

"Do you really want to play this game with me, Julian?" I asked, my voice calm, measured, completely devoid of any emotion. "Do you really want to pretend you do not know what I am talking about? I have evidence, photographs, emails, financial records that prove everything. If you do not sign these divorce papers right now and give me what I am asking for, I will make sure every single person in this city knows the truth about you and your precious little mistress and your precious little love child. I will destroy your reputation, Julian. I will ruin your business deals, your carefully crafted image, and I will make sure everyone knows exact

ly what kind of man you really are."

Chapter 5 : The geodeThe moment I stepped out of Julian's office building and into the warm sunlight of Veridia, I pulled out my phone and dialed my lawyer with trembling fingers. I needed to act before Julian found a way to block me from the money that was rightfully mine. Mr. Harrison answered on the second ring, and I did not waste time with pleasantries. Every second counted."Mr. Harrison, this is Elara Vance." My voice came out steady, urgent. I could hear the surprise in his tone; he was not used to me taking initiative with my finances. "I need you to liquidate the joint accounts Julian and I share, and transfer my portion into a private account only I can access. I want this done immediately, before Julian finds a way to freeze the funds."He was quiet for a moment, clearly processing. He knew how much I had always trusted Julian with our money, how I had let Julian handle everything because I was too afraid of his temper."Mrs. Sterling, I mean, Elara," he said carefully. "

I could see the war raging behind his eyes, the battle between his pride and his fear, the struggle between his desire to maintain control and his terror of losing everything he had worked so hard to build. He opened his mouth to speak, then closed it again, and I watched his shoulders slump slightly as he finally realized he had lost this battle, that I had finally found a way to beat him at his own game."Fine," he said, his voice cold, bitter, filled with barely contained rage. "I will sign your precious divorce papers, Elara. But I want you to know this is not over, and I will not forget what you have done to me today."He picked up a pen and signed the papers with quick, angry strokes, shoving them across the desk toward me without meeting my eyes. I felt a surge of triumph flood through my veins as I picked them up and examined his signature carefully to make sure it was valid.I then took a pen and signed my own nam

Chapter 2: Rebirth.I woke with a gasp that tore through my throat, my body jerking upright as if I had been shocked back to life. My hands flew to my chest, my face, my arms, and I was stunned to find myself whole and unbroken. No burns. No cuts. No crushing weight of concrete pressing the air from my lungs. My heart pounded so hard I could hear the blood rushing in my ears, and I looked around the room with wide, desperate eyes, trying to understand where I was and why I was not dead. The bedroom was achingly familiar. It was mine and Julian's, the room where I had spent countless nights crying myself to sleep while he claimed to be working late.Sunlight spilled through the windows in warm gold beams. Birds sang outside. I could hear the distant hum of traffic and voices, all the ordinary sounds of a city that had not yet been consumed by fire."This cannot be real." My voice came out hoarse and shaking. I threw off the covers and stumbled out of bed, nearly falling as my legs buck

  • Reborn Before The End .   The Death.

Chapter one: The Death The sky above Veridia burned orange, terror and screaming filled the streets like a symphony of agony I had never heard before. No one knew yet what was happening, whether this was a natural disaster or the start of something else entirely, something that defied explanation, but an unexpected apocalypse had just begun, and none of us understood it. I ran with my lungs on fire, pushing through crowds of panicked strangers, because I needed to find Julian before something happened to him. Buildings collapsed around me, chunks of concrete and glass raining down like a deadly storm. People shouted for loved ones already lost to the chaos swallowing our city.A woman grabbed my arm, her eyes wild with panic. "You cannot go that way, the whole block is coming down! You will die."I shook her off with more strength than I knew I had and kept running forward, because nothing mattered except reaching Julian. The heat was unbearable, the smoke thick enough to choke on,
