THE STEPMOTHER’S EYES

She arrived without warning.

I was in the main conference room going over the revised logistics numbers with two managers when the door opened and Chloe’s mother walked in. Elena. Perfect posture. Pearl earrings. The same calm, elegant presence she had always used to make every room rearrange itself around her.

The managers stood automatically. I stayed seated.

“Don’t let me interrupt,” Elena said, smiling. “I only came to see my daughter. They told me she was on this floor.”

Chloe wasn’t on this floor. Chloe was across the city at a lunch I had already confirmed she would attend.

Elena knew that.

She had come for me.

I dismissed the managers with a short nod. They left quickly, closing the door behind them. The conference room suddenly felt too large.

Elena walked to the opposite side of the table but didn’t sit. She simply looked at me.

The silence stretched.

“You’ve lost weight,” she said finally.

“I’ve been busy.”

“So I hear.” Her gaze moved over my face, my hands, the open documents in front of me. “Your father says you’ve taken a stronger interest in the company’s smaller holdings. That’s new for you.”

“People change.”

“Do they?”

She said it lightly, but her eyes didn’t match her tone. They were steady. Measuring. The same eyes that had watched me for years while she played the role of the gracious stepmother who never overstepped.

In the original future those eyes had watched me lose everything without once looking surprised.

Elena pulled out a chair and sat down slowly. She folded her hands on the table. The movement was graceful, deliberate.

“Chloe is worried about you,” she said. “She says you’ve become distant. Suspicious. Harder to reach.”

“Chloe worries about many things.”

“She worries about her sister.” Elena tilted her head slightly. “And I worry about my husband. He doesn’t need tension in the house. Not at his age. Not with the board watching every shift in the family.”

There it was.

The soft warning dressed as concern for my father.

I met her eyes and held them. “Then Chloe should stop spreading stories about my mental state. That would lower the tension considerably.”

Elena’s expression didn’t change. But something behind her eyes sharpened.

“Stories,” she repeated. “Is that what you’re calling them?”

“Yes.”

She studied me for a long moment. The kind of look that peeled back layers. I forced myself to stay still under it. Breathing even. Hands relaxed on the table. No blinking too fast. No looking away.

In the original timeline I had always broken first under that stare. I had filled the silence with explanations. Apologies. Soft defenses that only made me look weaker.

This time I let the silence work for me.

Elena was the first to speak again.

“You’re different,” she said quietly.

“Am I?”

“Yes.” She leaned back in the chair. “The girl I knew would have already started explaining herself. She would have asked if she’d done something wrong. She would have tried to smooth things over.”

“Maybe that girl got tired.”

Elena’s mouth curved slightly. Not a smile. Something closer to interest.

“Chloe thinks the hospital changed you,” she said. “I think it’s something else.”

My pulse stayed steady, but only because I forced it to.

She couldn’t know.

There was no version of events where Elena Laurent knew about the future I had seen. She was calculating, not supernatural. Whatever she sensed, it was instinct. Observation. The same cold talent she had always used to stay three steps ahead of everyone in the family.

Still, the way she looked at me made the skin along my arms tighten.

“I should go,” I said, closing the folder in front of me. “I have another meeting.”

Elena stood when I did.

For a second we were the same height across the table. Her perfume was the same expensive scent she had worn for years — clean, floral, impossible to forget.

“Be careful, Ariana,” she said softly. “Girls who change too quickly make people nervous. And nervous people become dangerous.”

I held her gaze. “I’ll keep that in mind.”

She watched me gather the documents. Her eyes never left my hands.

At the door I paused and looked back.

“Give Chloe my regards,” I said. “I heard her lunch was canceled. I’m sure she’ll be free to see you now.”

A very small flicker moved through Elena’s expression.

Then it was gone.

I left the conference room and walked straight to the elevators without looking back.

Only when the doors closed and the elevator started moving did I let my shoulders drop half an inch.

Elena had always been the more dangerous of the two.

Chloe was emotion. Impulse. Hunger.

Elena was patience.

And patience had just looked at me like it was already revising its plans.

ETHAN’S FIRST MISTAKEEthan called me three times before noon.I let the first two ring out. On the third I answered.“We need to talk,” he said. His voice sounded rough, like he hadn’t slept. “In person.”“I’m busy.”“Five minutes. I’ll come to you.”I looked at the clock on my desk. “You have until I finish this call with legal. After that I’m leaving the building.”He was waiting in the lobby when I came downstairs. He looked worse than he had at the birthday party. Shirt slightly wrinkled. Eyes restless. The confident man who had tried to announce a wedding date in front of half the industry was gone. What remained looked cornered. We stepped into one of the smaller meeting rooms near the lobby. I didn’t sit.“Say what you need to say.”Ethan dragged a hand through his hair. “Chloe thinks you’re moving assets behind the family’s back. She’s convinced you’re trying to freeze her out of the logistics chain and anything connected to it.”I kept my face empty. “Chloe thinks a lot of

A MESSAGE FROM THE PAST**The message arrived at 2:17 a.m.I was still awake, sitting at the desk in my apartment with the logistics reports open and a cold cup of coffee beside my hand. The city outside the window had gone quiet in the way it only did in the middle of the night. My phone screen lit up.Unknown number.I almost ignored it. Spam calls and empty threats had become common since the rumors started moving through the company. But something about the timing made me open it.One line.No greeting. No name.“You still keep the blue notebook in the second drawer of your bedside table. The one with the broken clasp. In the original timeline you burned it the night before the court hearing.”My hands went still. The blue notebook.I hadn’t thought about it in weeks. It was an old thing from university — cheap cardboard cover, bent metal clasp that never closed properly. I used to write lists in it. Stupid ones. Things I wanted. Things I was afraid of. After I woke up in this tim

CHANGING THE CHARITY DINNERThe charity dinner was held in the grand ballroom of the Harcourt Hotel.Same crystal chandeliers. Same string quartet. Same silent auction tables lined with things only the wealthy pretended to need. In the original timeline, this night had been one of the first quiet disasters. I had smiled too much, deferred too often, and given Board Member Richard Langley the exact impression he later used against me.Tonight I arrived alone. No Ethan. No Chloe hovering at my elbow. Just a black dress, clean lines, and the knowledge of how this evening was supposed to go.Langley was already near the bar, laughing with two other board members. In the original future, he had approached me during the main course, asked pointed questions about my "recovery," and later told half the table that I seemed fragile under pressure. That comment had followed me for months.I didn't wait for him to find me.I walked straight to the group."Mr. Langley," I said. The conversation pa

THE FATHER'S BLIND SPOT I found my father in his study after nine. He was still in his work shirt, glasses on, reading glasses low on his nose as he went through a stack of printed reports. The lamp on his desk cast a yellow circle over the papers. Everything outside that circle looked darker than it should have. I knocked once and stepped inside. "You're still awake," he said without looking up. "So are you." I didn't let his words cool before I replied. He smiled slightly and took the glasses off. "These numbers from the logistics division don't look better than you said. You were right to flag them." I sat down across from him. The leather chair felt too large. For a moment neither of us spoke. The clock on the shelf ticked the way it had since I was a child. "I've been meaning to talk to you," I said. He leaned back. "About the restructuring?" "About Chloe." His expression shifted. Not much. Just enough to tell me the subject already bored him. "What about her?" I ch

CHLOE’S POISONI heard the first rumor in the women’s lounge on the thirty-second floor. Two wives of board members stood near the mirror, speaking just loud enough to be overheard.“—still not herself after the hospital. Chloe says she stares at nothing for long stretches. Sometimes she doesn’t answer when spoken to.”“Poor thing. And the way she spoke to Ethan at the party… that wasn’t normal.”“Chloe’s worried she’s heading toward another episode. She didn’t say it directly, of course, but you can tell.”I stepped out of the stall, crossed to the sink, and washed my hands slowly. Both women went silent.I met their eyes in the mirror and smiled politely.“Ladies.”They murmured greetings. Their reflections looked away first.I dried my hands and left. The poison was already moving.By afternoon it had reached the lower executive floor. An assistant who used to greet me with real warmth now spoke too carefully, like I might break or lash out. In the elevator, two managers from fina
