Winning Back the Wife

A week before our wedding, Damian Hale threw me a pre-wedding party at his family's private racetrack. His racing partner, Sienna Belmont, tossed a set of car keys into my lap. "Every bride should take a spin, right?" I wanted to refuse, but Damian slung an arm around me and said with a laugh, "It's just for fun. Sienna will show you around the track. You'll be fine." I let my guard down. But when I reached the third turn, I hit the brakes. Nothing happened. The car crashed through the barrier. My spine snapped, leaving me in a wheelchair. Three months later, I saw Sienna walk out of Damian's bedroom wearing my engagement ring. All he had to say was, "Avery, I need a wife who can stand beside me." Sienna wheeled me out to the rooftop terrace. "Want to know why your brakes failed?" With a smile, she released my wheelchair's brake and gave me a hard shove. I plunged 40 stories. When I opened my eyes again, I was back a month before the party. I called my father, who was out driving his cab. "Dad, before you became a cab driver, you were a championship coach. You trained some of the best racers in the business. Would you teach your daughter to beat one?"

Chapter 1
Half an hour later, his yellow cab, with more than two hundred thousand miles on the odometer, pulled up outside my apartment. My father leaned out the window and jerked his chin toward the passenger side."Get in."I had barely reached for the driver's-side door when he hit the locks."Passenger side.""Aren't you going to teach me?""Let's see if you have any potential in you."That night, Dad didn't take me to the racetrack. He picked up passengers as usual.Airport. Bar. Hospital. A motel on the outskirts...I rode shotgun all night as he took more than a dozen different routes through the city. By the end, I couldn't stop yawning. At one in the morning, a drunk suddenly stumbled into the road.I shut my eyes without thinking.Dad barely moved the wheel. The car slipped past the man without him even having to slam on the brakes."Did you see it?""See what?""His shadow moved before he did."Our next fare was headed to the airport. The car ahead suddenly changed lanes, but Dad had

The next week, Damian took me to the racing club his family frequented.A row of modified cars lined the underground garage, and the walls were covered with race photos.I counted under my breath. Sienna's name appeared 16 times. She sat at the bar in a black leather jacket. When she saw me, she let out a whistle."Well, look who showed up. I thought the smell of engine oil in here would drive you off."Several people around us laughed.Damian put an arm around my shoulders."Don't tease her."There was no reproach in his voice—only indulgent affection.Sienna hopped down from the bar and shoved a stopwatch into my hand."Since you're here, you can time us."As if I belonged on the sidelines, watching the two of them tear around the track.Damian already had his gloves on."Wait for me, baby. Two laps."I looked down at the stopwatch. In my previous life, they would talk about racing while I fetched water, took pictures, and waited for Damian.Sometimes people asked if I knew anything

Chapter 3
For the next ten days, I planned the wedding during the day and trained with Dad at night. When it rained, we went to the old industrial district. When it was foggy, we took the mountain roads.Once, at two in the morning during a downpour, I had just dropped off a passenger when the rear of the car suddenly fishtailed.I hit the brakes without thinking.Dad shouted from the passenger seat, "Let off!"I yanked my foot off the brake and steered into the skid.A few seconds later, the taxi was back in its lane.Dad glanced at me in the rearview mirror."That was more like it."It was the first time he'd praised me.And suddenly, something clicked.Sienna hadn't relied on driving skill alone to destroy me in my previous life.In fact, she'd barely needed any skill at all.She knew an amateur like me would panic. She knew that when the brakes stopped responding, I would keep slamming my foot down on the pedal. She hadn't needed any special technique. All she'd needed was one small push to

Chapter 4
On the day of the party, I slept until ten in the morning.Damian called three times in a row.His last message said, "Seven tonight. Don't make me hunt down a runaway bride."I sent back a smiling emoji.Dad came to pick me up that afternoon. He was still driving the same yellow taxi.I came downstairs in a short white dress and high heels. He stared at me for several seconds."You're wearing that?""Everyone expects me to look like someone who can't drive today. I have to play the part."He grunted and opened the door for me.For the past month, I had not touched a real race car.But I could already handle a skidding taxi in a downpour and read what the drivers around me were about to do.Dad's final lesson was never to compete with someone just to prove I had more guts."A lunatic isn't afraid of crashing. You have to make her think you're crazier than she is."By seven that evening, the private track was already packed.Sports cars lined the lot, and the music made my eardrums thro

The smile froze on Sienna's face."Swap?"I shrugged."Yeah. It's just for fun, so it shouldn't matter which car we drive."I stepped closer and held her gaze."Didn't you say friendship first, competition second?"The people around us immediately began to cheer us on."Swap!""Let Avery try Sienna's car too!""It's the bride's night!"I tossed her the keys to the red GT.Sienna caught them on instinct. Then she looked at the red car, snapped back to the moment and went pale."I'm not swapping!"The laughter around us faded.I pretended to be confused."Why not?""The silver GT is tuned to suit the way I drive. A beginner like you couldn't handle it.""That's fine."I pointed at the red car."Then you take this one. If a beginner like me can drive it, you shouldn't have any trouble."Her brows knitted together."I said I'm not swapping!"This time, even Damian frowned."Sienna. It's just a change of cars. What's gotten into you today?"She whipped her head toward him."I want to drive

Damian hurried over."Are you sure?"My father glanced at him."Get a mechanic to take it apart and check it."Two track engineers arrived within minutes.A little over ten minutes later, one of them stood up with a grim expression."The brake line has been tampered with. A routine low-speed test wouldn't catch it. But after repeated hard braking at high speeds, the system would quickly lose pressure."He looked toward the circuit."At tonight's speeds, the brakes would fail completely by the third corner."The entire track went silent.Everyone turned to look at Sienna. Her face went white."Why are you all looking at me? How do you know Avery didn't do it herself?"I folded my arms and laughed in disbelief. "You think I tampered with my car, then got behind the wheel to drive the course you set up?"Damian's expression darkened."Sienna, you went into the service area this afternoon, didn't you?"She whipped her head toward him."You suspect me?!""Answer me.""I check the cars befor

Sienna glanced over at me.Then, without warning, she swerved into my lane.A gasp rose from the stands.I eased off the gas at once. She cut in front of me, her rear bumper barely missing the front of my car.Dad said gravely in my earpiece, "She's getting rattled."Of course I knew.I had seen that move in footage from her previous races.Whenever someone threatened her position, she used her car to push them off their racing line.In the past, however, she had always left them enough room to recover. Not today. She wanted to beat me. More than that, she wanted me to crash.Just like in my previous life, when she had set up that friendly race to kill me.When I survived the crash, she pushed me off a building instead.Another corner.I was about to pass on the outside when she suddenly swerved toward me.The front of my car came within two feet of her rear bumper.I slammed on the brakes. The tires shrieked against the asphalt. The cheering in the stands stopped.Someone cursed, "Has

The next morning, Dad and I went to the police station to give our statements. The police had obtained all the footage from the race.It showed Sienna dangerously cutting me off several times. The final incident was the clearest. She had deliberately swerved into my line while I slowed down and backed off.The two cars never made contact. There was no question who was responsible for the crash. Sienna had lost control all by herself. The investigation into the red GT also produced results quickly. The service-area records showed that she had gone inside alone three hours before the party. She had stayed there for exactly fourteen minutes, and the cameras had been switched off for those same fourteen minutes. Then things got even worse for her.A young mechanic went to the police on his own."Three days ago, Sienna wired me 5,000 dollars. She told me not to inspect the red GT's braking system tonight."The transfer record was still on his phone. And Sienna hadn't completely deleted the

Damian's fingers closed tightly around the ring."Avery!"He grabbed my wrist."I said that, but I thought she only wanted to humiliate you by beating you badly. I swear, I had no idea she would tamper with your car or try something like that on the track."I pulled my hand free, my expression numb."And? As long as I wasn't actually hurt, everything you two did was fine?"His face went white.Sienna, lying in the hospital bed, suddenly let out a sinister laugh. She laughed until tears spilled from her eyes."Avery, who are you trying to fool? You chased Damian for six years, and the wedding is already planned. Can you walk away from this?"I turned my head and looked at her."That's what both of you thought. That's why you kept walking all over me."Her expression froze.I looked at Damian again and began listing everything he'd done: "She took over the wedding planning, took my car, and called me a trophy wife who belonged in the passenger seat in front of everyone. No matter what ha

Six months later, I won my first Rookie Touring Cup title.Dad stood below the podium and shouted himself hoarse.Around the same time, Sienna finally left the hospital. She appeared at the hearing in a wheelchair, having lost function in most of her body below the neck. The woman who had once been fearless on the racetrack now needed help even to move her wheelchair. The evidence from the investigation into the red GT was conclusive.Sabotaging my car also came with legal consequences.Every racing team cut ties with her.Her sponsors terminated their contracts, and her racing license was permanently revoked. As she was leaving the hearing, she suddenly called out to me, "Avery."I looked back. She stared at my legs."Happy now?"I looked at her."What are you talking about?""I can't stand up."Her eyes were red."Damian doesn't want me. My races, sponsors, and team are all gone! It's all because of you! And you have everything!"I was silent for a few seconds."Your crash was your o
