Chapter 3

Author: Northern Slumber
It was the third year after the divorce and my third year back in the workforce.

The project I was in charge of brought in a huge profit. With my bonus, I signed up Lucas for the piano and painting classes he'd always wanted.

In this life, I prioritized both his material and emotional needs. I didn't want his incomplete family and unfulfilled material needs to leave him feeling so vulnerable that he would one day be easily swayed by superficial affection.

I never imagined I'd run into Serena again three years later, right outside Spark Academy.

She looked just as surprised to see us. Her eyes fell on Lucas' clothes, and she curled her lip in a sneer. "Caspian, look at you playing big spender and wasting all that money on his extracurriculars. Are you actually trying to turn trash into something successful?"

Lucas had just been about to call out "Mom", but he decided to swallow his words. He looked at her puzzledly, as if he couldn't understand why his biological mother harbored such malice toward him.

I frowned and warned her in a low, dangerous voice, "Lucas is your flesh and blood, Serena. Even if you don't love him, you don't have to be vile."

Over the last three years, I'd been preparing Lucas for this. I was terrified that, as a sensitive kid, he'd trap himself in the impossible quest of "making Mom love me" or turn into a people-pleaser just to earn her approval.

So, the first lesson I taught him was to accept that Serena didn't love him.

Coming to terms with a parent's lack of love was one of the hardest lessons that even adults couldn't master. But I wanted Lucas to know that he wasn't born to please anyone, nor did he need to respond to anyone's unprovoked cruelty.

Over the three years, he'd grown remarkably in every sense. Faced with Serena's venomous words, he showed a momentary flicker of hurt before straightening his back and firmly telling Serena, "I'm not trash. I'm my dad's son, Lucas Poole."

She let out a disdainful laugh and continued hurling insults, "Caspian, for the sake of our seven-year marriage, let me give you a piece of advice.

"Some kids are just born with bad genes and are beyond saving. No matter how much effort you put into cultivating him, you'll just raise an ungrateful brat.

"So, don't be surprised when you work yourself to the bone, only to raise an ungrateful brat with no self-respect who runs off with some street thug."

Suddenly, a child's voice interrupted us. "Dad?"

It was Talia, whom I hadn't seen for three years.

The moment she called out to me, Serena went on full alert mode and scooped her up into her arms. "I'm warning you, Caspian. The judge gave her to me, so don't even think about snatching my genius daughter away."

That was the reason Serena had blocked every visitation attempt for the past three years.

Talia looked exactly as I remembered, with an innocent face, wide, beautiful eyes, and a mouth that knew how to lie best.

A bad feeling crept in. Why was Serena here with Talia?

When I voiced that question, Serena smirked confidently. "We're here to learn, of course. What else do you do at Spark Academy?

"My daughter inherited the best of my genes, and she's way smarter than kids her age. I heard they just opened a programming class here, so I brought her here to check it out. We have to start these skills early since she's going to aim for the top universities in the future."

I was horrified. "Talia's only three years old! Have you lost your mind?"

After hearing what Lucas said, I finally understood what all those years of hard work were for. This neighborhood did have efficient security. He turned to me hesitantly after Serena was kicked out. "Dad, was I too harsh?"I shook my head and smiled. Over the past few years, he'd always had complicated feelings toward Serena. On one hand, he resented her irresponsibility as a mother, but on the other, blood ties made it hard for him to ruthlessly cut her off. When I thought about it, the same thing went for Talia and me. Even after learning about the truth of my past life, I still couldn't help but think about the moment she chose to let go of my hand and fall."You did the right thing, Lucas. Kinship is the most complicated thing in this world. You have to love yourself first. Everything else comes second."…That September, Lucas left for university in Berylon.Serena, who'd disappeared for some time, suddenly appeared downstairs at my office. She looked worn down and lifeles

Serena was rushed into the ER.As a result of the trauma from my past life's celebration party, I'd specifically instructed the staff not to have any sharp metal cutlery in the hall, so the tool Talia had used to stab Serena was just a plastic cake knife. It caused internal injuries to the spleen, but nothing life-threatening.Lucas' celebration party ended in absurd chaos.I felt sorry for him and offered to throw another party, but he just said it was fine. He told me he'd had a dream lately. In the dream, he was married with kids, but he had no education or a job, and spent every day walking on eggshells around Serena, turning into a man he didn't recognize."Now that I have a new life, this is more than enough, Dad. I'm content," he said.…After the incident, Serena seemed to realize that she'd lost everything, so she turned her focus back to Lucas and me. This was the first time in her life that she realized she had a son.She started cornering Lucas on his way home and t

Talia's words hit Serena like a thunderclap. "What are you saying, Talia? H-how could you think that of me? I'm your mother, the one who loves you most, and I've been hoping you'd succeed.""Stop lying to yourself, Serena," Talia snapped. "You never loved me. You loved the talent you imagined I had."Look in the mirror. As a loser and a middle school dropout, you're always dreaming of having prodigy children. You're the biggest fool on this planet!"Talia roared into the microphone, letting it all out.Serena finally snapped. "I've misjudged you, Talia. You still have Caspian's inferior genes, and there was never any hope for you to be talented."I raised you all these years, fed you, and cared for you, but you're nothing but a disappoint—"Something in her words struck Talia's nerves. Like a madwoman, Talia lunged forward, grabbed the cake knife, and drove it straight into Serena's abdomen.Once, twice… Blood immediately spread across Serena's body. Talia exerted all her stre

The lights went out with a click. The entire hall, along with the giant screen that had yet to load the score, was plunged into darkness.Serena burst out cursing. "What are you doing, Caspian? You can't handle losing to me, so you're playing dirty tricks, aren't you? I'm warning you—get those lights back on now!"What did that blackout have to do with me?I comforted the startled Lucas, and just as I was about to get up and check, a crackle of electricity came before the lights flickered back on.Talia was standing not far away, like she'd just rushed in, still catching her breath. The moment Serena saw her, she forgot all about holding me responsible for the blackout and dragged Talia over to introduce her to the crowd."Everyone, this is my top-scoring daughter, Talia Poole!"When we check, don't be surprised if her score doesn't show up right away because the top students always have their scores hidden."Any minute now, the top universities will be calling me and offering

Ten years passed in the blink of an eye. Lucas was successfully enrolled in his dream university. His grades weren't outstanding, but over the decade, he'd grown into a well-rounded young man. He found his passion in Art and Design and was accepted through the early admission track. At the celebration party, Serena arrived uninvited. She launched into a tirade of ridicule aimed at Lucas and me, the same tired old scripts about inferior genes and how he was destined to be a mediocre talent for the rest of his life.To be honest, I never cared about turning my children into prodigies. Even when I raised Talia in my past life, I only tried to correct her dangerous habits. Her admission to a top university back then was the result of her own hard work. But seeing Lucas break the trajectory of his past life to grow up healthy and happy was everything I could possibly ask for. When Serena saw that neither Lucas nor I would engage with her, she dropped a bombshell that Talia had sat for

"So what if Talia's three?"Serena was completely lost in her fantasy of raising a prodigy. "They say you can see a child's future at three and their character at seven. Talia's gifted, so I'm not going to waste that!"To be honest, besides programming, I've also signed her up for Apex Mathletes, computer science, and early childhood physics competitions. Not everyone is as mediocre as your son, Caspian."I felt my blood boil. "That's just forcing growth! Talia's only three, so what she needs right now is basic life skills and a healthy sense of self, not this overload of classes. Her body can't handle the strain!"I'd raised Talia for years in my past life, so I knew her better than anyone. The vacant look in her eyes and dull focus were clear signs that her system was on overload.I recalled a rumor I'd heard from a mutual friend, that Talia had pushed a boy in her class into a pond and nearly drowned him during a class trip, costing Serena a fortune in settlements. I couldn't
