Chapter 4

Author: Perfect Timing
My sister stumbled into view, disheveled and breathless.

It had been a long time since I'd last seen her, and Judy no longer resembled the refined, glamorous person she'd once been. Exhaustion clung to her like dust, making her look at least ten years older.

I'd heard the rumors: in order to raise Phillip into a future "big boss," Judy—who once refused to lift even a finger—quit her job and devoted herself entirely to serving him. No wonder Ronald and Phillip were decked out head to toe in designer brands, while she walked out in an oil-stained apron, traces of chopped vegetables still clinging to the fabric.

And yet, despite all the hopes she'd pinned on her son, he was dreaming of replacing her with a prettier mother.

When Judy saw Ronald holding that young woman's arm so intimately, she snapped. Instead of going after her cheating husband, she lunged at the young woman.

"I'll kill you, you shameless homewrecker!"

Sensing trouble, Phillip darted aside and hid behind a row of cl

  • Reborn: Getting Back My Real Son   Chapter 10

Soon after Axel started college, Nate and I moved to a new city and began a new chapter in our lives. To make our retirement years more comfortable, we agreed to buy a villa in the suburbs. After more than a decade of hard work, purchasing a villa barely caused us any pressure. In this new city, without Axel nearby, Nate and I finally stopped holding back and threw ourselves into our careers with complete freedom.Another five years passed.During those five years, I rose to the highest position in my field, reaching the peak of my career. Nate retired early, happily embracing his peaceful life with nothing more than a fishing rod in hand.More than once during that time, we considered laying out an easier path for Axel—opening doors, arranging connections, paving shortcuts. But to our surprise and delight, he was nothing like the Phillip from my previous life. Without relying on us at all, Axel and a group of exceptional classmates founded a studio while still in college. With s

My parents knew full well they hadn't been proper grandparents to Axel all these years, so they kept their heads down, quietly picking at their food in embarrassment. My in-laws, on the other hand, couldn't stop praising Axel. But when their eyes drifted over to my sister, confusion flickered across their faces."Cindy," one of them asked, "how come I never knew you had an aunt?"I smiled."Aunt? No, she's my sister."I couldn't blame them for the mistake.Years of overwork had drained every ounce of life from Judy. She'd aged long before her time. Deep wrinkles carved across her face, and large patches of her hair had already turned white. No amount of makeup could cover the exhaustion etched into her features.Sitting beside my mother, she looked so worn out that they could've passed for siblings if you didn't look closely. While everyone chatted idly, I picked up a glass of wine and sauntered toward Judy.Ever since she walked into the banquet hall, she'd been radiating res

  • Reborn: Getting Back My Real Son   Chapter 8

If not for my sister's prophecy that Phillip would someday become a big boss, Ronald would have divorced her long ago. After taking first place several times, Phillip became something of a local star.A few television interviews later, he rediscovered the sense of superiority he'd enjoyed in his previous life.He would stroll past me with his report card in hand, using every opportunity to mock me for "abandoning" such a brilliant child—what a terrible mistake I'd made, according to him.Unfortunately for him, every time he came gloating, he always happened to run into Axel returning home from school. At that time, Axel was in middle school and knee-deep in his rebellious phase—his temper exactly like his father's. He excelled academically, but he also led a group at school and had a reputation that made teachers and students alike tread carefully around him.He usually kept a cold, brooding face, but it always melted away when he stepped into our home and saw me and Nate. And s

"That's it, you little brat. I'm calling your grandmother right now. If you sneak out in the middle of the night again, I'll break your legs myself," Nate scolded.Phillip struggled wildly, shouting at the top of his lungs."Mom! I know you're reborn too. Hurry up and explain it to Dad!"I rolled my eyes so hard they nearly stuck, then opened the door and motioned for Nate to toss him outside.'You're not my son. Why on earth should I deal with you?' I thought.Nate slammed the door shut. Phillip tried to push his way back in, only to get knocked backward by one of Axel's punches. That night, Judy apparently came to drag Phillip home. She was convinced I was trying to "steal her precious son" again and made a scene outside our door for hours.Too bad for her, the soundproofing in our building was excellent. We didn't hear a thing—and we slept like babies.Over the next few months, Phillip took every chance he could to sneak away and bother our family whenever Judy wasn't watchi

Nate gave Axel's shoulder a satisfied pat. "Talking big isn't enough. Starting tomorrow, I'm watching you. We're doubling your study load."I smacked Nate lightly on the back of the head."Don't put too much pressure on Axel."Even so, it wasn't that I doubted Axel's abilities. I had tutored him myself—I knew exactly where he stood. He was gifted and willing to work hard. Given time, I didn't know whether he would become a prodigy among his peers, but he certainly wouldn't turn out poorly.I just didn't want him pushed too far. That night, after finishing my skincare routine and preparing to rest, the doorbell suddenly went off like it had lost its mind. The moment I opened the door, a figure lunged forward and wrapped himself around my leg."Mom!"Phillip's eyes darted rapidly, his expression full of eager flattery—completely different from the arrogant boy I saw at the mall earlier. The abrupt shift made my brows knit together. I tried pulling him off me."What are you doin

The moment I mentioned Phillip, Judy completely lost control. She ignored every warning I tried to give her and instead latched onto the wrong idea entirely."I get it now. You're jealous of my future villa, aren't you? You want to take Phillip back!"I was speechless. I didn't even bother responding and turned to leave.I hadn't expected that simple movement to set her off."Cindy! Even you think you can walk all over me? Don't you dare!"With a shriek, she grabbed a nearby clothing rod and charged at me.Before I could dodge, a smaller but much faster figure rushed in front of me and slammed into her with full force.Axel might still be young, but his little body was already solid. Judy wasn't prepared for the impact—he knocked her straight off her feet, sending her crashing to the ground. Then he planted himself in front of me, using his not-yet-grown frame as a shield."Don't you dare bully my mom."His voice made my sister's expression flicker. She stared at Axel for a
