Chapter 2

Autor: Nameless
Robert's POV

In that instant, the Quinlan family took a massive hit—thousands of employees were laid off, families were plunged into crisis, and widespread discontent broke out. Zachary had already fled abroad at that point, leaving Sophia to deal with the consequences.

In the end, thanks to me, Dad took a serious hit to plug the Quinlan family's financial hole. Sophia was disowned and nearly left homeless, but I used my remaining savings to get her back on her feet so that she could slowly build back her standing with Quinlan Group.

There were plenty in the business world who admired my decisiveness—so much so that one of the biggest names had even asked me to marry his daughter, saying that if I became his son-in-law, I would be the world's richest man for the next decade.

Everyone assumed Sophia would be overwhelmed with gratitude and that I would win her heart in the end.

I, however, knew that she didn't feel grateful to me at all. She held a grudge instead.

That was because I personally heard her phone call with Zachary.

Sophia resented me, thinking that if I had just finished the project before handing it to Zachary, none of this would have happened, nor would Zachary have fled abroad and forced them apart. She completely forgot that she was the one who stole the project from me in the first place.

I had warned her that the project had flaws, but she just brushed me off impatiently. "Zachary graduated from Capital Elite University too! Do you really think he wouldn't spot a problem with the project? You should just say it out loud if you're reluctant to hand over the project!"

Thanks to my influence, the Quinlans slowly welcomed Sophia back into the fold. David even reached out to me, proposing the marriage alliance that had been previously postponed.

I rejected the offer without hesitation. I knew from the start that Sophia loved Zachary.

I had no desire to chase a lost cause, nor did I want to bring pain to the person I loved. I figured I'd just take the hit alone rather than having two people trapped in misery.

I caught a strange illness that left me frail when I was still in elementary school, so people around me always called me a weakling.

There were a lot of boys in my class constantly looking for excuses to pick on me and show off their strength. They didn't stop even after receiving repeated warnings from the teachers. They would retaliate against me even more severely afterward whenever I reported them.

I was just about to end it all when a girl barged into my life. She acted like a neighborhood ringleader, leading a group of children to beat up my usual bullies and leaving them a warning.

"Robert is under my protection!"

I carried the memory of that girl with me from that day onward.

One day, David suddenly told me that Sophia hadn't rejected the idea and that she was actually the first one on board.

I suddenly felt my resolve wavering then. I figured that no one could have said no when their first love, the one they'd idolized since they were young, stood before them and asked for their hand in marriage.

It was only after we got married that I learned that David had kept the truth from me. Sophia had indeed agreed to the marriage, but only because Zachary's overseas business venture had failed, leaving him with massive debts.

It turned out that the Quinlans had offered to clear Zachary's debts and pass control of Quinlan Group to her, on the condition that she went through with the marriage alliance with me.

"Uh…"

I came back to my senses when someone suddenly patted me on my shoulder. I heard the chatter around me gradually thinning out because the wedding was about to begin, and the bride and "groom" needed to head off to get ready.

I turned around and saw a young man looking at me with a conflicted expression—or rather, looking at the boutonniere pinned to my chest that marked me as the groom. He had probably seen everything that had just gone down and wanted to say something comforting, but didn't know where to start.

I smiled faintly and patted him on the shoulder. I then took the glass from his hand and downed the drink in one go, all while he watched in surprise. "Thanks."

Robert's POVSophia looked frantic as she broke down in tears and told me that there was a problem with the project involving illegal and criminal activities. She actually hadn't filled me in on any details when she told me to come out here for the project. She had simply asked me to set up a company in my name to handle the liaison work here, while I was actually just handling minor tasks. Sophia tearfully asked me what we should do, but I just wiped her tears and promised I'd figure something out for her."You and I are tied together since we're married. If we don't sort this out right away, the Quinlan family will go under…" she muttered.I looked at her bloodshot eyes and felt a pang in my heart. I paced around for a while before making up my mind and turning to Sophia. "Why don't we get a divorce, Sophia?"Sophia was stunned. "Y-You want a divorce? W-What will happen to you if we get a divorce, Robert?"I studied her eyes carefully and smiled wryly. "It's fine, Sophia.

Robert's POVWhen Dad returned home, he immediately asked, "Are you alright, Robert?"I instantly felt a lump in my throat. I dropped all pretense before Dad and broke down in tears. He didn't pry, and I didn't explain anything either.Just like always, Dad supported me unconditionally, no matter what I did.…Sophia and I set our wedding date for May 20th, and all the preparations were well underway. However, the public reaction online was pretty bad, all because I ditched the previous wedding. It was pretty much wall-to-wall backlash targeting me."I found out that the man Ms. Quinlan was pursuing was actually someone named Robert Lister. He doesn't appreciate what he has at all, letting a woman pursue him twice!""I've heard that name before. Is he the Robert from the Lister family, the one that's about to go under?""I think that's him. It seems like he's just a freeloader living off a woman now. Where does he even get the nerve to act so high and mighty? He actually had t

Robert's POVSophia clung to me even tighter, looking just like a frightened kitten. She then said something that floored me completely. "I know you were reborn as well, Robert. I'm aware that I treated you terribly in our past life, but you already walked out on me at the wedding yesterday."Do you know what everyone is saying about me out there? Haven't you punished me enough already, Robert?"She sobbed uncontrollably, tears streaming down her face. "You used to shield me from everything, unable to bear seeing me hurt at all. You've already put me through so much. Haven't you gotten enough out of it, Robert?"So Sophia had been reborn too. It all made sense now. I slowly opened my eyes and let out a heavy sigh. "I'm sorry about screwing up your reputation by ditching the wedding, but I'm genuinely exhausted and can't do this anymore, Ms. Quinlan. Isn't this the perfect outcome for you and Zachary? You're free to give yourself completely to him now."I felt a wave of relie

Robert's POVI couldn't help but wonder if this was just some game between Sophia and Zachary, using me for their amusement. I also pondered the possibility of Sophia throwing a tantrum at Zachary, using me just to get under his skin.I was too stunned to speak. Sophia's face gradually paled as she realized I hadn't responded to her proposal. In the meantime, gasps broke out all around us.Just moments earlier, when Sophia popped the question, countless signs had lit up around us. There were signs everywhere reading, "Sophia Quinlan loves Robert Lister" and "Sophia & Robert Forever", while the solemn wedding march played in the background. Those present were all convinced that the woman before them was Sophia Quinlan, the rising star of the business world."Holy shit! You're actually right! That's actually Ms. Quinlan! Isn't the man supposed to be the one popping the question? Why is it the other way around? Do wealthy people just do weddings differently?""It seems like the wea

Third-Person POVMike had already taken off, leaving Sophia by herself, clutching the boutonniere tightly with an unreadable expression. She slapped Zachary's hand away when he came over to help her up. She glared at him with pure hatred and got back on her feet, morphing right back into that ruthless, cold-hearted CEO. She stared off into the distance, her eyes bloodshot and puffy yet still as piercing as ever. She looked as though she could spot Robert's whereabouts from miles out. "You can't run from me, Robert!"…Robert's POVI couldn't be bothered when all hell broke loose back on the luxury cruise ship. I was still treading and swimming through the waves, and despite being relatively close to shore, swimming all the way back would still demand a great deal of effort.I felt a slight twinge of regret—not for ditching the wedding, but for skipping the lifeboat just to show off. I still would have jumped into the sea if I had to do it all over again, though, just because

  • Reborn Groom Jilts His Cold Bride   Chapter 3

Robert's POVI walked down the hallway and strode out toward the deck under the bewildered stares of a few onlookers. I knew that being reborn on the day of my wedding had given me a second chance to choose differently. In my past life, I had lived for Sophia. So in this life, I wanted to live for myself. I couldn't care less about the childhood dream girl and being set on just marrying Sophia.…Third-Person's POVIn contrast to Robert's carefree attitude, the lively chatter at the venue began to fade. After all, the bride had already been waiting a while, yet the groom was still nowhere to be seen. Sophia stood on the stage, clenching her fists so tightly that her knuckles paled. To lighten the mood, the emcee kept cracking jokes. He then spotted the boutonniere pinned to Zachary's suit in the audience. He couldn't help but tease as his eyes brightened. "It turns out the groom was here all along, playing hide-and-seek with us! You should hurry up and come onto the stage!
