Chapter 3

Author: Bobu
Everything unfolded as I had anticipated. The men whose secrets I controlled came forward to court my favor.

Under pressure, they gave me critical intelligence about the Victor Family's resources.

They had no choice now but to become my most loyal men.

"Don, the Victor Family's leader has requested negotiations with you."

I agreed.

In my previous life, the Victor Family had negotiated with Andrew too. That meeting ended in his absolute defeat.

But everything was different now.

The Victor Don was named Burke. He was young and handsome in the photographs.

He was said to be formidable. After rising from the bottom, he had brought his entire family to heel in only a few years.

When Burke heard I was the new Don, he demanded to meet with me personally.

Burke. I was sure I had heard the name before. It stirred a vague sense of familiarity.

But I could no longer remember why.

Once the meeting with the Victor Family was arranged, I went home.

Andrew still had not returned. He must have been rescuing his first love.

For that matter, I would not have minded if Lilith died.

If she died, Andrew could not blame me this time. I had already taken his power; that alone would make his life unbearable.

If she lived, I would strip him of his power and then destroy his love as well.

After showering, I lay down in my bedroom. Soon, the front door opened and two people entered.

I knew Andrew had returned with Lilith.

I stepped out of the bedroom and watched Andrew in silence.

He was carrying Lilith in his arms. She was completely unharmed, though clearly shaken by what had happened.

"Ella, the ceremony went well, I take it?"

Without so much as acknowledging me, he gently settled Lilith on the sofa, then came straight toward me.

"I'm back. Lilith is fine. She's just a little shaken."

He strode up to me as if everything were settled and spoke with the condescension of a man granting a favor.

"You've done enough. Now give me the Don's ring. I'll take over from here."

He held out his hand and waited for me to hand over power meekly the way I had in my previous life.

I gave a soft, mocking laugh and lifted my chin.

"Andrew, have you misunderstood something?"

His face stiffened as I held his gaze. "I am the Family's sole Don now. The way you're speaking to me already crosses a line."

Vincenzo soon took Andrew away, bringing the ordeal to a temporary end.Andrew had retained some support within the Family, but after this, everyone who had secretly backed him was purged. Finally, my grandfather confronted Andrew's parents and laid the surveillance footage of his infidelity before them. The marriage agreement was swiftly canceled. When I met Andrew's parents, they were still trying to salvage it.A connection to me was their only chance to maintain their standing within the Family.I faced them without mercy."This is not your decision. There was never a marriage, only a title. More important, Andrew not only cheated on me but attempted to rape me. The marriage is impossible."With that, the matter was over for good. After Andrew's parents left, my grandfather regarded me with open admiration. He approved of how I had handled everything."Ella, I've heard you and Burke get along well, and the Victor Family wants a deeper partnership. Why not take this opportunity to m

I tapped my forehead and cursed myself for being foolish.I was the Don now. With Burke's support, deeper cooperation between the Victor Family and mine was certain. Everyone stood with me.Who would believe a man no one respected?Besides, Andrew was the one cheating. I had plenty of surveillance footage to prove it.What a joke.Andrew called again. This time, I answered and put him on speaker.Across from me, Burke thoughtfully began recording the call. The moment the line connected, Andrew erupted."Ella, get out here now!"His roar barely stirred me. I felt nothing for Andrew now, and I had made that painfully clear. How could he still imagine he could control me as before?"Andrew, you have no authority to give me orders.""You are my fiancée!"Andrew roared. I laughed at the sound of him."Only your fiancée. We aren't husband and wife. Besides, don't you love Lilith? You certainly don't love me."Andrew fell silent. He could not deny it. Lilith was his first love, and from the b

How could he have a photograph like that? Why was he showing it to me now? If it became public, our partnership with the Victor Family would certainly collapse. Then my own Family would question my right to the position of Don.I stared at my face in the photograph, unable to hide my disbelief.I fought to contain my emotions, but Burke saw every one of them."That must be you, Miss Ella, cutting through everyone in your path."I ignored Burke. All I could think about was where he had obtained the photograph.Burke had already read my thoughts. He took a sip of coffee, put away his phone, and said evenly, "If you're wondering how I know, I'll be a little sad. I took that photograph myself."I froze, spilling the coffee I had just lifted across the table.Burke reacted instantly. He offered me a handkerchief; when I did not respond, he gently wiped up the coffee in front of me himself."Miss Ella, don't be so shocked. Have you really forgotten? Think carefully. Where have we met?"When

I knew how badly Lilith wanted that token. She had entered Victor territory because her younger brother was in danger there.Worried for him, she had forced her way in and been captured.I bore Lilith no personal grudge. It was not her fault Andrew had never gotten over her.I treated her well for one reason: the more at ease she felt in our home, the closer and more intimate she would become with Andrew. That prospect no longer frightened me.Lilith beamed at me.With the token, she could visit her brother without fear.Andrew clearly knew none of this. Lilith's smile only made him suspicious. He snatched the token from her hand and inspected it, afraid I had given her something dangerous.I laughed."It's only a free-passage token. Do you truly think I would hurt someone?"I stepped forward, took the token from Andrew, and returned it to Lilith. "This token is special. Even the Don will honor it. Carry it, and you won't have to worry about danger."Lilith smiled and clutched the toke

Ignoring Andrew's glare, I rose and spread my hands with a helpless shrug."I was only trying to comfort your first love. I'm not going to hurt her. The Family needs me now, so I have no time to bother with either of you."Having said it, I walked straight to my own room, shut the door behind me and paid no more attention to the two of them outside. My words finally unsettled Andrew. He knocked on my door. "You still haven't told me what happened with the Family. What is going on? You had better not destroy everything."I lay on the bed with no intention of opening the door.Destroy the Family? Hah. Which one of us had abandoned it at its most dangerous moment to rescue an outsider?Andrew, if you had faced those problems yourself, could you truly have solved them?Go take care of your first love.Your time for despair would come.I put on my noise-canceling headphones. I did not want to hear another sound from outside.Tomorrow's meeting with Burke was what mattered most.I had only j

Andrew was stunned. He had never imagined I would speak to him that way.My emotions barely stirred. I glanced at Lilith beside him.Their bond had begun long ago.Andrew had reportedly endured a dark period within the Family when he could trust no one. Lilith had remained at his side throughout it.Then Andrew rose through the ranks, only to be forced apart from Lilith by his alliance marriage to me.Andrew had always seen himself as a sacrifice to the Family. Unable to challenge anyone else, he vented his resentment on me.In my previous life, I assumed I was failing him somehow and did everything I could to satisfy his demands.Looking back, I had been a fool. It had never occurred to him that the Family had sacrificed me too.In the end, after I truly fell in love with him, he had me tortured to death without a moment's hesitation. As I lay dying, he had even told me why."Ella, do you know why I treated you so well after I became Don?"You killed my Lilith.
