Chapter 2

Autor: Julian Rowan
“The system also shows that someone used his account to open the final bid at 8:47 pm.”

The screen flickered, then changed. One by one, the evidence appeared—the access logs, account activity, and file-opening records… Each timestamped and impossible to ignore.

I had indeed been on this floor that afternoon, but I had been in the conference room next door, completing a video signing on behalf of Issac.

The access-control system simply marked the entire floor as the project area. As for that account, I had never logged into it.

The compliance officer pushed a screenshot of a bank account across the table toward me.

“An affiliated company under Henry’s name received 20 million dollars today.”

The account listed me as the ultimate beneficial owner. However, the account had been opened using the name I had before the Peay family adopted me.

Dad's expression darkened completely. “Hand over your phone, computer, and bank accounts. All of them.”

“Sure. Go ahead and investigate.”

I looked around the room and continued.

“But my phone must be sealed in the presence of representatives from both the Peay and Grant families, then handed over to an independent third party with no ties to either side. Until then, no one is to access my devices privately.”

Charles planted both hands on the table. “Henry, every day this investigation drags on, the financing costs and damages will only increase.”

I replied, “That’s precisely why, with so much at stake, the evidence cannot be handed over to anyone who may be involved.”

I finished speaking and looked toward the compliance officer. His Adam’s apple visibly bobbed.

Dad slammed his hand against the table. “If you have nothing to hide, why won’t you let us investigate?!”

A few notification sounds rang out at the same time across the conference room. An official letter from Grant Corporation had been sent to every director’s phone.

Until both sides had jointly verified the evidence, no one was permitted to access, delete, or alter any records on the devices in question.

Right then, another message from Elizabeth appeared: [Don’t let anyone touch the original device.]

I turned off my phone screen.

For the first time, I saw the smile fade from Charles’ eyes.

When I returned to my office, I opened the electronic evidence-preservation page I had set up in advance. Every piece of original data connected to me had already been synchronized and submitted to an independent third party for preservation.

In this life, that USB drive had never passed through my hands.

If Charles still wanted to pin the crime on me, he would have to tamper with something else.

The more records he altered, the more traces he would leave behind.

…

The next morning, I walked into the executives' dining hall. Several people who had been sitting together immediately picked up their trays and moved to another table.

As I passed by, a conversation drifted into my ears.

“Charles is an adopted son too, but he knows how to take responsibility for the company.”

Charles happened to walk in from outside and glanced at everyone. “The investigation isn’t over yet. Don’t talk about my brother behind his back.”

Then he carried his tray over and sat down across from me.

“I’ll take responsibility for the project’s losses for now. Once you’re cleared, I’ll personally return your position to you in front of everyone.”

I looked up at him. “When did my position become yours to decide whether I get back?”

His hand stopped in midair, and the room fell silent.

Charles slowly set down his cutlery. “I’m trying to save you some dignity.”

I looked at him and replied in a calm voice, “You took my position from me, and now, you’re talking about saving me some dignity? That’s a little ridiculous, Charles.”

At 10:00 am, an emergency board meeting was called.

The bank that provided financing to Peay Corporation issued a final ultimatum. Within 24 hours, Peay Corporation had to have someone take responsibility.

Otherwise, the bank would reassess whether to continue extending credit to the company.

Claiming it was necessary to protect the company, Dad suspended all of my project authority. He stripped me of my position and froze the family benefits I had accumulated over the years. He even revoked my right to attend board meetings.

Finally, the announcement of the Peay and Grant families’ marriage alliance was put on hold.

I opened the disciplinary order.

“The investigation hasn’t even started. Why am I the only one whose authority has been suspended?”

Gideon and Aaron cooperated with the investigation and accepted responsibility for their respective roles. Those involved from Stark Corporation were also held accountable. The project that had originally been compromised was put back out for bid.Peay Corporation and Grant Corporation made it to the final round once again.Someone asked me if I was worried history would repeat itself. I only replied, “Procedures exist to keep people from gambling on the assumption that they’ll get away with it.”This time, both teams reviewed and confirmed the bid together. Every step was witnessed. No one could take the documents away alone, and no one could bypass the rules simply because of who they were. When the results were announced, we won the project with a reasonable bid, not by ten thousand dollars more, and not to prove that it had belonged to me in my previous life.We won because our proposal was simply the better one this time. After the celebration dinner, I returned to the o

Charles stared at me. “What are you talking about?”“Nothing.” I had already found the answer in his expression. He leaned back in his chair. “Henry, are you feeling pretty satisfied with yourself now? Dad has lost his position, and I’m sitting here. Peay Corporation and the Grant family’s project are all yours. You finally have everything.”I looked at him calmly. “You still think we were fighting over the same thing.”“Were we not?”“No. What I wanted was for everything I did to be mine to answer for, and for no one to force me to confess to something I never did. What I wanted was for you to never again be able to use the word ‘brother’ to put your crimes in my hands.”Charles let out a cold laugh. “Without Elizabeth, you couldn’t have done any of this.”I opened the evidence index. The USB drive was sealed because I had demanded it.The third-party evidence preservation was something I had arranged in advance. The original records were something I made him sign with his o

After news of Dad's suspension from Peay Corporation became public, Stark Corporation immediately issued a statement. They claimed they had not known anything about the leaked bid. The 20 million dollars, they said, had simply been a legitimate consulting fee. After reading the statement, I told my secretary, “Turn Aaron’s chat records over to the project owners.”The messages showed that Stark Corporation’s contact had not only confirmed the receipt of our bid but had also discussed with Charles how to make it look as though I had received the money. The scheme was simple. They knew our number, then they bid 10,000 dollars more. The final step was transferring the money into my account. That was the entire plan. Anyone could understand it.The project owners quickly announced that Stark Corporation’s winning bid would be suspended and that the entire bidding process would be reviewed.Representatives from Stark Corporation came to see me. They were willing to compensate us for

I asked, “So he has to hurt me before you’ll call it a crime?”Dad lowered his voice. “Henry, you’ve already won. Your position, your inheritance rights, Peay Corporation… They’ll all be returned to you. Why do you have to destroy him?”I suddenly felt exhausted. In my previous life, I spent my last breath trying to understand why he had never been willing to hear my explanation. In this life, I finally knew the answer. It was not that the evidence had been insufficient; it was because I was the one being accused, and the person who had actually done wrong was his biological son.“Call a board meeting tomorrow.” I rose to my feet. “You can repeat what you just said in front of everyone.”…The next day, Peay Corporation’s board convened again. This time, there were no reporters.Dad sat at the head of the table, looking as though he had aged years overnight.I played the recording from the abandoned archive building.Charles admitted in his own voice to fabricating the ban

“Sign a statement admitting that you instructed Aaron and Gideon to frame me, then hand over the original evidence. If you do as I say, I’ll give you this letter back.”I glanced at the statement. “Do you really think I’m going to sign this?”“You will.” Charles raised his phone. Dad's number was displayed on the screen. “Dad already agreed. As long as I keep this matter under control, he’ll protect me. I’m his only biological son.”When he said the words biological son, a long-suppressed pride finally surfaced in his eyes.“Everything in the Peay family is supposed to be mine. You were nothing more than a replacement he chose when he didn’t have a son.”I did not argue. I simply asked, “So you copied the bid and framed me because Dad told you to?”“Of course not.”He gave a cold laugh. “He wouldn’t have the nerve, but he’ll clean up the mess for me. Just like yesterday, when he could throw you out with a few fabricated records. Then he can use the entire Peay family to put me

I stared at those words for a long time without saying anything. It turned out Charles was not an adopted son like me. He was Dad's biological son.Back then, Lovina’s identity could not be made public, so Dad used an adoption arrangement to bring him into Peay Corporation. No wonder he sided with Charles without hesitation every time a choice had to be made. It was not because Charles was more obedient, and it was not because I was somehow less of a Peay. It was simply a matter of them sharing the same blood.Elizabeth looked at me. “What are you going to do?”I closed the file. “We keep this out of the public eye for now.”She raised an eyebrow. “You’re not going to use it?”“Charles leaked the bid and framed me. The evidence we already have is more than enough. I don’t need to prove whose biological son he is to prove that I committed no crime.”His parentage could explain Dad's favoritism, but it could not lessen anyone’s guilt.I returned to the temporary office and too
