Chapter 3

Author: Julian Rowan
Dad frowned deeply. “Every piece of evidence we have points to you."

I said, "The USB drive was originally in Charles’ custody, and his team prepared the final bid, so why is he still allowed to take over the project?”

Charles immediately rose to his feet. “You can suspend my authority too. I’ll abide by the board’s decision.”

He said it without hesitation, as though he genuinely did not care about power.

However, Dad waved a hand. “Now, stabilizing the situation is what matters most. Charles knows the project inside and out. Effective immediately, he’ll take over the Investment Division and handle the fallout.”

The appointment papers were quickly distributed to everyone in the room.

My team, my office, and all the project files were handed over to Charles as well.

“I object to this appointment.” I pushed the document back across the table. “Please record my objection in full, along with the voting results, in the official minutes.”

Dad’s voice turned cold. “You’re in no position to question the board.

"Whether I have that right is determined by the company’s bylaws, not by your word.”

No one in the room spoke up for me.

However, under everyone’s watchful eyes, the secretary still recorded my objection in the minutes.

After the meeting, Charles caught up with me at the elevator. “Henry, this wasn't something I fought for.”

I pressed the elevator button. “Did you refuse it?”

He was silent for half a second. “The company can’t be left without someone in charge.”

I looked at him. “So you get to take over the benefits, while I take the blame.”

His voice dropped. “The 20 million dollars, the account login records, and the file access logs all point to you. You owe Dad an explanation, at the very least.”

I said, “When the original records come in, I’ll explain everything.”

“The original records won’t save someone who’s already lost everyone’s trust.”

The elevator doors slowly closed.

Through the narrowing gap, I saw him standing outside, looking perfectly calm as though he had already settled comfortably into my old position.

When I returned to my office, my nameplate had already been removed. The security told me I could only retrieve my personal belongings under escort.

Charles was already sitting in my chair, flipping through the list of team members I had been working with for the past three years. When he saw me enter, he closed the file.

I ignored him, opened a drawer, and took out the old fountain pen my mother had left me. Engraved on the inside of the pen was the identification number of the orphanage where I had lived before I was adopted.

Charles’ gaze lingered on the numbers for a second. It was brief, so brief I almost thought I had imagined it. I slipped the pen into my pocket and walked away.

…

When I returned to the Peay residence, two suitcases were already waiting in the foyer. My clothes and personal belongings had been packed with meticulous care, as though someone had prepared them long ago.

The butler kept his head lowered. “Sir says it wouldn’t be appropriate for you to remain in the main house while the investigation is ongoing.”

I did not touch the suitcases. I walked straight to the study.

Dad, Charles, and the group’s legal counsel were all there. A separation agreement lay on the desk.

I was to resign from all my positions, forfeit my family benefits and inheritance rights, and dissolve my engagement with the daughter of the Grant family.

The final clause required me to acknowledge that I alone was responsible for the project’s losses.

Dad pushed a fountain pen toward me. “Sign it, and I’ll hold off on calling the police for now.”

I flipped to the final page. “If the evidence is already sufficient, why not report me directly?”

I closed the agreement. “I’m not signing.”

Dad slammed his hand against the desk. “Henry, do you really intend to drag the entire Peay family down with you?”

“The person dragging the Peay family into this isn’t me.”

Dad said nothing more. He simply ordered someone to escort me out.

As I left the study, Charles followed. It was not until we reached the end of the hallway that the warmth finally disappeared from his face.

“Do you really think Elizabeth will turn against the entire Peay family for you?”

I stopped in my tracks.

“You’re hoping she won’t look into it because once Grant Corporation checks everything themselves, your little setup might not survive scrutiny.”

Gideon and Aaron cooperated with the investigation and accepted responsibility for their respective roles. Those involved from Stark Corporation were also held accountable. The project that had originally been compromised was put back out for bid.Peay Corporation and Grant Corporation made it to the final round once again.Someone asked me if I was worried history would repeat itself. I only replied, “Procedures exist to keep people from gambling on the assumption that they’ll get away with it.”This time, both teams reviewed and confirmed the bid together. Every step was witnessed. No one could take the documents away alone, and no one could bypass the rules simply because of who they were. When the results were announced, we won the project with a reasonable bid, not by ten thousand dollars more, and not to prove that it had belonged to me in my previous life.We won because our proposal was simply the better one this time. After the celebration dinner, I returned to the o

Charles stared at me. “What are you talking about?”“Nothing.” I had already found the answer in his expression. He leaned back in his chair. “Henry, are you feeling pretty satisfied with yourself now? Dad has lost his position, and I’m sitting here. Peay Corporation and the Grant family’s project are all yours. You finally have everything.”I looked at him calmly. “You still think we were fighting over the same thing.”“Were we not?”“No. What I wanted was for everything I did to be mine to answer for, and for no one to force me to confess to something I never did. What I wanted was for you to never again be able to use the word ‘brother’ to put your crimes in my hands.”Charles let out a cold laugh. “Without Elizabeth, you couldn’t have done any of this.”I opened the evidence index. The USB drive was sealed because I had demanded it.The third-party evidence preservation was something I had arranged in advance. The original records were something I made him sign with his o

After news of Dad's suspension from Peay Corporation became public, Stark Corporation immediately issued a statement. They claimed they had not known anything about the leaked bid. The 20 million dollars, they said, had simply been a legitimate consulting fee. After reading the statement, I told my secretary, “Turn Aaron’s chat records over to the project owners.”The messages showed that Stark Corporation’s contact had not only confirmed the receipt of our bid but had also discussed with Charles how to make it look as though I had received the money. The scheme was simple. They knew our number, then they bid 10,000 dollars more. The final step was transferring the money into my account. That was the entire plan. Anyone could understand it.The project owners quickly announced that Stark Corporation’s winning bid would be suspended and that the entire bidding process would be reviewed.Representatives from Stark Corporation came to see me. They were willing to compensate us for

I asked, “So he has to hurt me before you’ll call it a crime?”Dad lowered his voice. “Henry, you’ve already won. Your position, your inheritance rights, Peay Corporation… They’ll all be returned to you. Why do you have to destroy him?”I suddenly felt exhausted. In my previous life, I spent my last breath trying to understand why he had never been willing to hear my explanation. In this life, I finally knew the answer. It was not that the evidence had been insufficient; it was because I was the one being accused, and the person who had actually done wrong was his biological son.“Call a board meeting tomorrow.” I rose to my feet. “You can repeat what you just said in front of everyone.”…The next day, Peay Corporation’s board convened again. This time, there were no reporters.Dad sat at the head of the table, looking as though he had aged years overnight.I played the recording from the abandoned archive building.Charles admitted in his own voice to fabricating the ban

“Sign a statement admitting that you instructed Aaron and Gideon to frame me, then hand over the original evidence. If you do as I say, I’ll give you this letter back.”I glanced at the statement. “Do you really think I’m going to sign this?”“You will.” Charles raised his phone. Dad's number was displayed on the screen. “Dad already agreed. As long as I keep this matter under control, he’ll protect me. I’m his only biological son.”When he said the words biological son, a long-suppressed pride finally surfaced in his eyes.“Everything in the Peay family is supposed to be mine. You were nothing more than a replacement he chose when he didn’t have a son.”I did not argue. I simply asked, “So you copied the bid and framed me because Dad told you to?”“Of course not.”He gave a cold laugh. “He wouldn’t have the nerve, but he’ll clean up the mess for me. Just like yesterday, when he could throw you out with a few fabricated records. Then he can use the entire Peay family to put me

I stared at those words for a long time without saying anything. It turned out Charles was not an adopted son like me. He was Dad's biological son.Back then, Lovina’s identity could not be made public, so Dad used an adoption arrangement to bring him into Peay Corporation. No wonder he sided with Charles without hesitation every time a choice had to be made. It was not because Charles was more obedient, and it was not because I was somehow less of a Peay. It was simply a matter of them sharing the same blood.Elizabeth looked at me. “What are you going to do?”I closed the file. “We keep this out of the public eye for now.”She raised an eyebrow. “You’re not going to use it?”“Charles leaked the bid and framed me. The evidence we already have is more than enough. I don’t need to prove whose biological son he is to prove that I committed no crime.”His parentage could explain Dad's favoritism, but it could not lessen anyone’s guilt.I returned to the temporary office and too
