Chapter 2

Fox C
I woke to a blade cutting into my shoulder.

The royal healer was digging silver fragments out of the wound one by one. Every piece came free with a fresh rush of blood.

I bit down on a folded strip of leather and swallowed my screams.

“Stay awake, Mrs. Mercer,” the healer warned. Sweat ran down his temples. “If you shift, the silver will spread faster. Keep your wolf down.”

My wolf was already weakening.

So was the tiny heartbeat inside me.

Kaelan stood beside the operating table while another healer stitched the cut across his abdomen. He did not look at his own injury once.

“Pull through,” he told me. “You saved the Crown and every pack in this Alliance. Whatever you ask for after this, you will have it.”

I managed a faint smile.

The Hawthorne Pack. My father’s name. The fortune Lucas had slowly taken from us while pretending to love me.

There was plenty I wanted back.

But right then, all I wanted was the heartbeat beneath the healer’s hand to grow stronger.

It did not.

The doors burst open.

The royal aide Kaelan had sent to find Lucas stumbled inside. Cold sweat covered his face.

“Where is Commander Mercer?” Kaelan demanded.

The aide dropped to one knee. “My King, he refused to return.”

The room froze.

“Give me his exact words.”

The aide lowered his head. “Commander Mercer said Mrs. Mercer has threatened her pregnancy before whenever she wanted his attention. He said no pregnant wolf would be reckless enough to come near a security operation.”

My fingers tightened around the leather between my teeth.

Lucas knew exactly why I was there.

He had ordered me to deliver revised security maps because he was supposedly too busy to return home. Those maps had been my work. Like every plan that had built his career, Lucas only needed to put his name on them.

The aide continued reluctantly. “He also said Miss Vale was frightened by a rogue sighting and needed the elite unit more than Mrs. Mercer needed another audience for her performance.”

The baby’s heartbeat stumbled.

I heard it.

So did every wolf in the room.

The healer swore and reached for another syringe.

“Her stress is accelerating the silver poisoning!”

Kaelan ripped the black royal insignia from his coat and threw it at the aide.

“Take my seal back to Lucas. Tell him I am ordering him to report here immediately. If he refuses again, arrest him for desertion and treason.”

The aide ran.

The healer injected a dark liquid into my arm. Cold spread through my veins, briefly dulling the fire of the silver.

“This will slow the poison,” he said, “but it cannot reverse the damage already done.”

I searched his face.

“My baby?”

He did not answer.

“Tell me.”

The healer pressed his hand to my stomach. The room became so quiet that I could hear the blood dripping from the operating table.

The tiny heartbeat fluttered once.

Then stopped.

My wolf let out a long, broken howl inside my mind.

I stared at the ceiling.

No tears came at first.

The baby I had carried for eight months was gone.

Lucas had killed our child in my last life with wolfsbane and rogues.

This time, his selfishness had killed the same child before it ever took its first breath.

The healer leaned close. “We have to remove the baby now, Evelyn. If the silver remains inside your womb, it will kill you too.”

I turned my face away as the tears finally came.

“Do it.”

The scent-suppression system activated around the surgical ward. It flooded the air with bitter herbs strong enough to numb a werewolf’s nose and keep injured wolves from losing control around so much blood.

As darkness pulled me under, I heard Kaelan’s voice.

“Where is her mate?”

The aide had returned alone.

“Commander Mercer still refuses to come. He sent Miss Vale’s assistant in his place.”

One year later, every Alpha in the Alliance gathered beneath the royal banners.I stood beside Kaelan in a black military uniform. The Hawthorne crest rested over my heart, and the gold insignia of the War Ministry shone at my collar. The same councilors who once dismissed me as Lucas Mercer’s weak Omega now bowed their heads.Kaelan stepped before the assembled packs.“Evelyn Hawthorne rebuilt our border defenses, exposed corruption across six territories, and ended the rogue smuggling network without losing a single soldier,” he announced. “By unanimous vote of the High Council, she is the new Minister of War.”I had spent that year replacing Lucas’s loyal officers with wolves who had earned their ranks. I reopened the training program to Omegas and Packless wolves, rebuilt every failed checkpoint along the summit route, and returned the stolen mining profits to the workers Lucas and the Vale family had poisoned. No one could say Kaelan handed me the position because I saved his life

Lucas dropped to his knees beside Serena’s body. For a moment, he looked devastated. Then he turned to me and began to crawl.“Evelyn, she is gone now. She was the one who came between us. We can start over.”I looked at him in disbelief.“Our child is dead. My father died in prison because of you. You tried to kill me twice, and you still think Serena was the problem?”Lucas grabbed the hem of my coat.“I was confused. I was afraid of losing everything. But I love you. I knelt outside your father’s office for three days because I wanted you.”In my last life, I had begged him from the floor of the rogue pit.I had reminded him of our first home, the promises he made, and the child about to be born.Lucas had not looked back. Now his life depended on me, and suddenly he remembered every promise.“You didn’t love me,” I said. “You loved the Hawthorne name, my work, and the future I could build for you.”The royal investigators pulled him away. The High Council convicted Lucas of treason

Three days later, the royal investigators delivered twelve boxes of evidence.Lucas had been careful, but Serena had not.Her father kept private ledgers showing every contaminated shipment sent through the Hawthorne mines. Lucas’s clearance appeared on the forged inspection reports. Money stolen from the mining company had paid for Serena’s house, jewelry, and private guards. There was also proof that Chloe had hired the rogues who once attacked me.Lucas had approved the payment.I sat at the head of the interrogation table while Lucas and Serena were brought in wearing iron restraints. They had spent three days blaming each other through the walls of their cells. Now they tried to stand together.“Evelyn,” Lucas said softly, “we lost our baby. Whatever happened between us, we should grieve as parents, not enemies.”My nails cut into my palm.He spoke about our child as if the baby had died in an accident.“You had two chances to come back,” I said. “You refused both.”“Because she l

The combat knife fell from Lucas’s hand. His face turned white.“My King…”Kaelan crossed the room and kicked the knife away.“Your mate took a bullet meant for me,” he said. “She lost your child while my healer begged you to return. Yet the first thing you did when you arrived was threaten to kill her.”Lucas pressed his forehead to the floor.“I didn’t know it was you. Serena told me Evelyn was lying. I was deceived!”Serena backed toward the door.“Lucas, don’t put this on me. You said the summit route was fake. You said no one important would come through this district.”Kaelan’s gaze sharpened.“A classified route was leaked, and you knew enough to call it fake?”Serena stopped moving.Lucas lunged for the first excuse he could find.“Evelyn gave her the information! She has always been obsessed with power. Her father taught her to use anyone she could.”He raised his head and pointed at me.“When the Moon Goddess paired us, the Hawthorne Pack forced me to accept the bond. Her fat

“What did you say?”Lucas’s grip loosened.“I said I want to break our mate bond.”For one second, real panic flashed across his face. Then Serena began to cry.“Lucas, don’t be angry with her. This is all my fault.” She pressed herself against his side. “If Evelyn hates me so much, I’ll leave. I never wanted to come between you and your mate.”Lucas forgot his panic at once.He pulled Serena into his arms with the same hand that had just bruised my jaw.“You are not going anywhere,” he told her. “Evelyn has threatened to leave a hundred times. She never means it.”I gave a weak laugh.“Try me.”Lucas’s expression darkened.“You think you can take my child and disappear behind the Hawthorne name?” He looked down at me with open contempt. “A jealous, unstable Omega like you is not fit to raise my heir. Once the baby is born, Serena will raise it.”Serena lowered her eyes, but I saw the triumph in them.“I would love the child as my own,” she whispered.Something inside me finally broke.

When I opened my eyes again, my stomach felt horribly light. The high, hard curve I had carried into the corridor was gone. Thick bandages circled my abdomen beneath the hospital gown. Every breath dragged pain through my empty womb. But I was alive. My child was not.Kaelan stood by the window in a torn white shirt. Blood, ash, and gunpowder covered him from head to toe. The royal insignia was no longer on his coat. With his aura weakened by his injuries and the ward’s scent suppressants flooding the room, he looked like any other wounded soldier. The woman standing at the foot of my bed did not recognize him.Chloe Grant had once been my personal assistant. In my last life, she had given a rogue gang the route I used when I visited the Hawthorne mines. They attacked my car and nearly killed me.When I tried to take Chloe before the Pack court, Serena cried and begged Lucas to spare her.Lucas told me I had survived, so there was no reason to destroy a young woman’s future over one mi
