Chapter 2

Author: Nameless
"Jonah, where are you going?" Lenora asked.

"I'm staying in the dorms," I said flatly, folding my clothes without even looking up.

Lenora frowned in confusion. "Is this all because of Kenneth?"

I stuffed the last T-shirt into my suitcase. "Building a good foundation during my freshman year is important. I want to focus on my studies."

I paused, then added, "Kenneth can have this room from now on."

In my past life, Kenneth made all kinds of flimsy excuses to take my room.

First, he claimed he was afraid of the dark and that the guest room was too far out of the way. Then he said he wanted his room to be closer to Mom and Dad's so he could bond with them.

Eventually, he resorted to tears, saying my room got more sunlight and that he needed it to regulate his mood.

Every time I refused, Mom and Dad accused me of being petty, immature, and selfish.

Since the outcome was inevitable anyway, why waste my energy? Where I lived made no difference to me anymore.

Lenora was quiet for a few seconds before asking, "Jonah, do you dislike Kenneth?"

I stopped what I was doing and looked up at her. "I don't like him or dislike him. I just think it's less of a hassle this way."

She stared at me for a long moment, then finally patted my head. "Jonah, I know this is sudden, and you might need time to adjust to having someone new in the family. But you have to believe that even with a new little brother here, the love Mom, Dad, and I have for you will never change."

They'd never change, huh? My mind drifted for a second.

I'd ranked first in my grade, and all Dad had said was, "Not bad. Keep it up."

But when Kenneth went from fifth from the bottom of his class to tenth from the bottom, the whole family celebrated like it was a holiday, showering him with praise for improving by leaps and bounds.

When I got hurt and ended up in the hospital, Mom and Dad had the housekeeper look after me, claiming they were too busy with work to step away.

But when Kenneth came down with a cold and a fever, they took turns taking time off work and staying by his bedside.

Mom's eyes even turned red as she said, "Kenneth has been through so much since he was little. We have to treat him twice as well from now on."

I pushed the memories aside and forced a faint smile. "Okay. Got it."

After Lenora left, I reached into the back of my closet and pulled out a finely crafted wooden box.

It was a music box Grandpa had made for me by hand before he passed away. Sadly, in my past life, Kenneth had smashed it to pieces.

For the first time, I got so angry that I hit him. He ran to Mom and Dad in tears to tell them how badly he'd been treated.

"I… I'd just never seen such a pretty music box before," he sobbed. "I wanted to pick it up and play with it, but Jonah yelled at me and wouldn't let me touch it. I got scared, so I accidentally dropped it and broke it. Mom, I really didn't mean to."

Without asking a single question, Mom laid into me. "Jonah, how could you treat your little brother like that? It's just a music box. Can't you show a little understanding?"

Right. It was just a music box.

But they forgot how much I treasured it. It was the last thing Grandpa left me to remember him by.

I closed the lid and gently placed it at the very bottom of my suitcase. I was taking this last keepsake with me.

…

At 6:00 pm, Mom knocked on my door. "Jonah, come down for dinner."

Her tone was deliberately upbeat, as if she were working hard to create a warm, cozy atmosphere. "It's Kenneth's first meal here, so let's all sit down together for a family welcome dinner."

I closed the book in my hands and went downstairs.

An expensive feast lay on the dining table, but when I walked up, I stopped short.

Kenneth had taken my usual seat, the one between Mom and Lenora. Wearing a crisp new white shirt, he sat there looking sweet and well-behaved, like a carefully tended flower.

Almost all the dishes on the table were crowded together right in front of him.

Kenneth was sent away against his will. On the day he left, he kept crying and screaming, "Jonah framed me!"But no one believed him anymore. From then on, Mom, Dad, and Lenora started coming to see me at school all the time. Every few days, they brought over clothes, health supplements, snacks, fruit—anything they could think of.Whenever Mom came, her eyes were red-rimmed. "Jonah, make sure you eat enough. Don't go hungry."Dad was always reminding me, "If you need anything, just let me know. Don't try to handle everything on your own."Lenora called me every single week. "Jonah, how have you been? Is school stressing you out? Do you want me to come back and keep you company?"It was their way of trying to make amends and bridge the rift between us.I accepted everything they offered."Thanks.""Got it.""No need. I'm fine."My answers were always short and cold.Every time Mom heard my replies, she'd falter for a moment, disappointment flickering in her eyes. But she di

Mom snapped out of her daze and hurried after me."Jonah, wait!" she called, her voice trembling with panic.I stopped, but I didn't turn around."I'm sorry," she choked out. "I was wrong. I shouldn't have doubted you."Dad walked over too, his eyes red-rimmed. "Jonah, I owe you an apology. I should've asked you first instead of just…"He hung his head.Lenora stood beside them, her hands hanging limply at her sides. "Jonah, I was wrong too. I shouldn't have blamed you without asking first."I listened quietly to their belated apologies. Then I brushed it all off as if it were nothing. "Got it."I walked on. Behind me, Mom still wanted to follow, but Dad held her back."Give him some space," Dad said, his voice low and heavy with guilt. The three of them stood rooted in place, watching me walk away, completely at a loss.…When I got back to the classroom, Mason immediately rushed over. "Jonah! Are you okay?""I'm fine," I said flatly, sitting back down at my desk."This

"Jonah, I'm begging you. Just own up to it…" Kenneth pleaded through his tears. The sympathetic murmurs from the audience grew louder."Kenneth's such a good person. Even after all this, he's still pleading for Jonah," someone said.Another agreed, "Seriously. Having an older brother like that is the worst luck in the world."Hearing the crowd's comments, Kenneth could no longer hide the smugness in his eyes. He looked at me, his lips curling into a faint smirk. It was time."Is everyone done watching the video?" I asked, my voice calm and unhurried.Everyone in the auditorium was taken aback."Then could you freeze the footage at the 1:32 mark?" I added, turning to the dean. "And zoom in on that person's profile."The dean looked startled for a moment, then did as I asked. The footage paused. In the frame, the figure stealing the exam questions had just turned around, revealing his profile to the security camera. It was only for a split second, but it was clear enough for ev

"Jonah, say something already!" Mason urged. "The whole school's talking about it. Aren't you going to set the record straight?"I sat at my desk, turning the pages of my book slowly. "No rush.""No rush?" Mason blurted out, on the verge of tears. "Do you have any idea what people out there are saying about you? Some say you stopped at nothing to get into the honors class, and others say your family donated money to the school to hush it up.""Let them talk."I looked up and gazed out the window. Out on the sports field, Kenneth was saying something to a group of girls, looking deeply pained every so often. He was a really good actor, just as he'd been in my past life."The more you rush into things like this, the more likely you are to mess up," I said. "Sit back and watch how it all plays out. That's the only way to see everyone's true colors."…The rumors spread even faster than I'd expected. That same afternoon, Mom and Dad got a call from the school about an emergency me

What burned in Kenneth's eyes was jealousy bordering on madness. The day after the midterm results came out, the school forum blew up.Someone had put up an anonymous post titled, "Shocking! Jonah Shepherd, Ranked Third in His Grade, Stole Exam Questions in Advance—Video Proof Inside."The post described in detail how I'd supposedly cheated. It claimed that the night before the exam, I'd snuck into the academic affairs office and taken pictures of the answer key.Attached below it was a blurry screenshot of security footage. It showed a figure in a school uniform standing at the door of the academic affairs office with his back to the camera. His face wasn't visible, but his build did look somewhat like mine. The comments section exploded instantly."Damn, is this for real?""I knew it. His grades are usually middle-of-the-road, so how did he suddenly score that high?""If this is true, that's way over the line.""But you can't even see his face in the footage. How can anyone

The office went dead silent.Dad's mouth hung open, the rest of his words stuck in his throat as he stared at me blankly.Mom was stunned too. She'd never expected me to apologize to Kenneth so suddenly.Kenneth froze where he stood. His expression shifted erratically—panic and shock flashed in his eyes, along with a trace of disappointment. He'd been waiting for me to fight back, to get into an argument with Mom and Dad, to hear Dad say, "We're going to transfer you to a regular class."That way, he could keep playing the poor, understanding younger brother who got the cold shoulder from his older brother. But I refused to give him that chance.I stayed bent in a deep bow, not moving a muscle. The room was so quiet I could hear everyone breathing.Kenneth's voice trembled slightly. "You… You don't have to do this…"He was panicking. Then Mom spoke up, her tone much softer. "See, Kenneth? Jonah apologized to you. From now on, if you need anything, just go straight to Jonah fo
