Chapter 2

Author: Quinn Loves Cilantro
In my past life, I had begged Michael to return those study materials to me, but when Monica saw that, she thought I was deliberately making things difficult for him and drove me out without a second thought.

That day was bitterly cold, with rain pounding down loudly. Monica and Michael were sitting by the floor-to-ceiling window as they ate their dinner, while I stood stubbornly outside until I blacked out.

I would never do something that stupid again, though. I deliberately lowered my head to pack up my things, pretending not to notice her gaze.

Monica looked at me in silence for two seconds before grabbing Michael and leaving, slamming the door behind her.

They were both laughing merrily and fooling around downstairs the entire afternoon, only to fall silent the moment Doreen Hall, the housekeeper, called me downstairs for dinner. They acted as though my arrival had totally ruined the mood.

I didn't really react; I just silently ate the food on my plate.

Michael suddenly placed a pork cutlet onto my plate and said, "You should try this, Hugh. I specifically asked Doreen to make it for you."

I hesitated for a moment before saying, "Thank you, but I don't eat pork."

Michael looked embarrassed. He went rigid and looked down, looking so pitiful that it could break one's heart.

"What's the big deal if you take one bite? Is it going to kill you?" Monica slammed her cutlery onto the table, her glare making it glaringly obvious that she thought I was faking it.

I looked at her resentful gaze, unable to understand when everything had changed. She had treated me like a fragile doll when she first brought me back home at 12 years old, meticulously checking my three meals every single day.

She had taken me to travel to various places when I was 13 years old, doing everything she could to broaden my horizons. She had single-handedly gone after the school when I was 14 years old, after finding out that a classmate of mine had mocked me for my accent, forcing the classmate to apologize to me.

I was clenching my fists so hard that my fingernails dug deep into my palms. I quickly looked away, not wanting her to catch this brief moment of weakness of mine. I reopened my eyes a few seconds later, and I was back to being calm and detached.

It was half an hour later, and the rain began to fall outside right on cue. I then heard the exact words Monica had said to me in my past life. "Michael is staying over tonight. He's afraid of the dark, and since the lights in the guestroom are broken, you two are swapping rooms."

Monica stared intently at me while saying this, seemingly certain that I would lose my temper. She wasn't wrong to think so; after all, in my past life, I had indeed thrown a massive fit and turned the whole house upside down.

Michael ended up backing down and staying in that dark room, but because he suffered a panic attack, he had to be rushed to the hospital.

It was from that moment forward that my relationship with Monica hit a freezing point.

It didn't matter to me anymore since I was moving out in a couple of days anyway. I had no problem vacating the room and giving it to him right then and there.

Upon seeing me agree so readily, Michael was visibly ecstatic and practically jumped for joy. Monica, however, looked momentarily dazed, her gaze tinged with desolation as she watched my figure ascend the stairs.

It had been quite some time since the guestroom had been aired out, so the quilt smelled a bit musty, which actually brought back memories of my hometown.

I recalled my incompetent father, my cruel stepmother, my loyal childhood friends, and the elderly neighbor who used to secretly slip me crisp apples. I slowly drifted off to sleep while surrounded by these various memories.

It was then that a sudden, piercing scream woke me with a start, and before long, panicked footsteps echoed down the hallway.

I opened the door, only for a hand to roughly grab my collar and yank me outside.

Monica shoved me hard onto the floor, her face twisted with a mixture of rage and disappointment. "You're too malicious, Hugh! I'll make sure you end up behind bars if anything happens to Michael!"

She helped Michael, whose face was twisted with pain, and slowly led him downstairs after saying that.

It was only then that I noticed the blood covering Michael's back, along with a few thumbtacks stuck into it. I shook my groggy head and braced myself against the railing to stand; my fingers, which were injured from the fall, were still trembling.

I had already chosen to step back in this life, but Michael still wouldn't leave me alone.

I had already prepared for this possibility, though. I went into the room and retrieved the camera I had hidden behind the vase.

Thankfully, since Michael hadn't turned off the lights, the footage captured every moment of him scattering the thumbtacks.

Monica yelled frantically, "Have you gone blind? Go save Hugh right now!"It was just that no matter how loudly she cried out, the version of her in the dream didn't look back.Monica drifted into the alleyway, where she witnessed a scene that utterly shattered her soul. Hugh was pinned to the dirt by several people, drenched in blood and completely unresponsive. She frantically began beating everyone in sight, but it was completely useless, as every strike passed through them as though she were hitting air. Monica fell to her knees and gathered Hugh into her arms, just like the very first time she had met him. She cried in despair, her body trembling as she coughed through her tears."Wake up, Monica! Wake up!"Monica's vision was completely blurry, and her entire body was incredibly sore. She slowly opened her eyes and scanned the crowded hospital ward until her gaze locked onto Hugh.…Hugh's POVI looked at Monica lying helplessly in the hospital bed with tubes hooked up

It couldn't possibly be considered a trivial matter, though. Monica hadn't been in a fight since she became an adult, yet here she was, impulsively fighting someone until her face was covered in cuts and bruises."Haven't I made myself clear enough, Monica? I don't want to be with you anymore. Why do you insist on coming here to disrupt my life?"Monica was visibly hurt by my disgusted expression, a hint of dread crossing her features. She threw all caution to the wind and explained hurriedly, "There is absolutely nothing going on between Michael and me, Hugh. I only stayed by his side because I wanted to get a rise out of you."She lowered her voice, looking visibly embarrassed. "I acted out of frustration because you never did what I asked and kept associating with irrelevant people. I realized I messed up now. Doesn't everyone deserve a chance to make things right? You can't just condemn them forever because of one mistake, Hugh…"I couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness as Mo

Monica had gotten thinner, which made her already defined features look even sharper, almost carrying a more aggressive edge. She, however, spoke in a surprisingly gentle tone, asking, "Can you please stop being mad at me, Hugh? I've spent a lot of time thinking things over. I'm fine with you wanting to become an official in this town, but please stay away from Cora—""I bought the cleaning supplies you needed, Hugh," Cora said, cutting off Monica as she walked in with a large bag of supplies. They then locked eyes with each other in mutual surprise.Monica's face visibly darkened with rage. "Are you really so desperate that you need any woman you can get, Hugh?"Cora put herself between us before I could respond and snapped, "Shut your mouth!"Monica let out a derisive chuckle as she nodded repeatedly. "It's no wonder you suddenly dumped me—it turns out you had a backup waiting for you all along. What exactly did you take me for, Hugh?"I looked at her with a scowl, completely

Michael's reputation was utterly ruined after that day, with the university noting a disciplinary offense on his record. He initially called me in tears, pleading for my forgiveness and asking me to help clear the disciplinary action. He lamented that he came from a rural background and that I should understand his plight. He wept so profusely that he nearly fell to his knees before me, but the moment I turned him down, he instantly changed his tune. "You recorded that video secretly, Hugh! You're the one breaking the law here!"I stated unhurriedly, "It used to be my room, so what I did with the cameras in my own space is none of your business."Michael snarled, "Is that even your house? You're just a pathetic stray, Hugh. You actually think you can move in and claim someone else's place, huh? You should take a good look at yourself before you start dreaming beyond your station!"I chuckled and asked, "You must be furious knowing that even a stray gets to live there while you can'

I couldn't believe that Monica would dismiss everything that had happened as nothing more than me making a fuss. I closed my eyes, fighting back the tears threatening to surface, and when I opened them again, my gaze held nothing but derision. "If I remember correctly, you were the one who told me to keep my distance. I've barely moved out for a month, and you're already regretting it, huh?""I do regret it." Monica straight up admitted it, completely catching me off guard. She was staring at me with an unmistakable intensity in her eyes, making it hard for me to meet her gaze. "I've done a lot of thinking lately—I don't want you living so far away from me anymore. I'll end things with Michael, so you need to give up that job of yours back in the countryside and never go back there again." I was left almost speechless by her onslaught of words. I couldn't help but wonder what gave her the right to do whatever she pleased with me. I mused that I was nothing more than a dog she co

Michael, believing that we were merely putting on a show, adjusted his sleeve, exposing the watch on his wrist. "I'll consider forgiving you as long as you offer me an apology before the entire faculty and student body and vow never to pursue Monica again."I didn't take Michael's threat to heart, merely fixing my gaze on the watch on his wrist. It was the birthday gift I had given Monica, purchased with the wages I earned during a two-month summer job I secretly worked after becoming an adult. It was just a gift, though, so once it was given, how she chose to handle it was entirely up to her. I had no interest in continuing to watch the act they were putting on, so I simply sent the video of Michael staging everything himself to his class's group chat.It was then that everyone's phone chimed with a notification, prompting them to click on the video. In the next instant, a chorus of gasps filled the room.Michael had been too arrogant to watch at first, but when he noticed some
