Chapter 4

Author: Quinn Loves Cilantro
I stated calmly, "You can rest assured that it'll never happen again."

Monica looked coldly at my departing back, her tone arrogant and cold while saying, "I'll give you a few days to think it over, Hugh. You'd better come and apologize to Michael once you've thought it through; otherwise, don't bother coming back."

Monica had indeed thought too highly of herself.

In the period that followed, I rented a place for myself. I focused entirely on preparing for my exams, ignoring every single call that came from Monica.

I had just walked out of the exam hall when I received a flood of messages—some from my classmates and some from my teachers.

"You have to come to the university as soon as possible—Michael has filed a complaint against your scholarship, Hugh.

"There might be an issue with your scholarship, so please come to the campus this instant, Hugh."

I had to take certificate exams and write my thesis with graduation drawing near, and now Michael had to show up on top of that. I sneered and immediately took a cab to the campus.

I walked into the student advisor's office and noticed Michael sitting there with bloodshot eyes, encircled by familiar faculty and classmates. They were taking turns offering him comfort.

I couldn't help but feel my heart skip a beat, as though I realized what was happening.

Upon seeing me, Michael immediately sprang to his feet. His shoulders trembled ever so slightly, as though he had been badly frightened. "I couldn't watch someone like you keep the scholarship after what you did, Hugh."

I cocked my brow slightly and asked, "What exactly did I do?"

"You really don't know what you did, huh?" Monica asked as she pushed open the door and walked in slowly.

Having not seen her for over a month, Monica's cold, haughty attitude had become even more pronounced, while her eyes were fixed on me as though I were a complete stranger.

Michael hurried over to Monica and intertwined his fingers with hers. He grew even more confident with Monica by his side. He looked at me as though he held the moral high ground and said, "You're the one who injured my back, Hugh. You weren't even punished for it, yet you won't even apologize to me."

I didn't beat around the bush and asked directly, "Why on earth should I apologize for anything when you're the one who orchestrated the whole thing yourself?"

Michael seemed to have anticipated this response from me. His face instantly flushed while his body shook slightly, looking as though he was too furious to speak.

In that instant, even several of my classmates found the situation intolerable. They felt compelled to intervene and stop me, saying, "You shouldn't take this too far, Hugh; no one sane would inflict harm upon themselves."

"I know, right? Is apologizing really so hard? You're only treating him like this because he's from an underprivileged background, aren't you?"

Mason Lowe, Michael's best friend, looked at me with undisguised contempt. "You're just jealous because Monica likes Michael. You were merely an unwanted stray until Monica kindly took you in. You shouldn't harbor any improper expectations; whoever she chooses to love is her own business!"

He spoke with absolute conviction, looking as though he were defending what was right.

I, however, was aware that Michael had instructed him to say these things. They had planned this from the start—they meant to destroy my reputation in front of everyone.

Mason's speech successfully appealed to the gossipy nature of the surrounding crowd, who began pointing at me and whispering to one another in succession.

"Hugh seemed like such a nice guy. Who would have thought he could be so malicious?"

"I know, right? You just can't judge a book by its cover!"

Monica just stared at me in total silence, her brow furrowed as if she were deep in thought.

Michael hid behind Monica and subtly cocked his brow at me in a blatant, provocative gesture.

Jodie Clark, who had been my student advisor for four years, immediately lowered her voice and said, "You should just offer an apology first, regardless of the facts. It won't do you any good if this blows out of proportion."

Mason immediately barked, "Why shouldn't we blow this up? You can't shield him just because you're his student advisor! You're supposed to serve as an exemplar of your profession, for goodness' sake! You're an absolute disgrace to your profession!"

Ms. Clark hadn't anticipated such insolence from him and was intending to confront him out of sheer anger.

I reached out to stop her. I then smiled and winked at her, saying, "I have a video to show you, Ms. Clark."

Ms. Clark looked down in confusion, and gradually, her rapid, heavy breathing began to calm. She then looked up, offering a subtle smile that only I comprehended.

Monica yelled frantically, "Have you gone blind? Go save Hugh right now!"It was just that no matter how loudly she cried out, the version of her in the dream didn't look back.Monica drifted into the alleyway, where she witnessed a scene that utterly shattered her soul. Hugh was pinned to the dirt by several people, drenched in blood and completely unresponsive. She frantically began beating everyone in sight, but it was completely useless, as every strike passed through them as though she were hitting air. Monica fell to her knees and gathered Hugh into her arms, just like the very first time she had met him. She cried in despair, her body trembling as she coughed through her tears."Wake up, Monica! Wake up!"Monica's vision was completely blurry, and her entire body was incredibly sore. She slowly opened her eyes and scanned the crowded hospital ward until her gaze locked onto Hugh.…Hugh's POVI looked at Monica lying helplessly in the hospital bed with tubes hooked up

It couldn't possibly be considered a trivial matter, though. Monica hadn't been in a fight since she became an adult, yet here she was, impulsively fighting someone until her face was covered in cuts and bruises."Haven't I made myself clear enough, Monica? I don't want to be with you anymore. Why do you insist on coming here to disrupt my life?"Monica was visibly hurt by my disgusted expression, a hint of dread crossing her features. She threw all caution to the wind and explained hurriedly, "There is absolutely nothing going on between Michael and me, Hugh. I only stayed by his side because I wanted to get a rise out of you."She lowered her voice, looking visibly embarrassed. "I acted out of frustration because you never did what I asked and kept associating with irrelevant people. I realized I messed up now. Doesn't everyone deserve a chance to make things right? You can't just condemn them forever because of one mistake, Hugh…"I couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness as Mo

Monica had gotten thinner, which made her already defined features look even sharper, almost carrying a more aggressive edge. She, however, spoke in a surprisingly gentle tone, asking, "Can you please stop being mad at me, Hugh? I've spent a lot of time thinking things over. I'm fine with you wanting to become an official in this town, but please stay away from Cora—""I bought the cleaning supplies you needed, Hugh," Cora said, cutting off Monica as she walked in with a large bag of supplies. They then locked eyes with each other in mutual surprise.Monica's face visibly darkened with rage. "Are you really so desperate that you need any woman you can get, Hugh?"Cora put herself between us before I could respond and snapped, "Shut your mouth!"Monica let out a derisive chuckle as she nodded repeatedly. "It's no wonder you suddenly dumped me—it turns out you had a backup waiting for you all along. What exactly did you take me for, Hugh?"I looked at her with a scowl, completely

Michael's reputation was utterly ruined after that day, with the university noting a disciplinary offense on his record. He initially called me in tears, pleading for my forgiveness and asking me to help clear the disciplinary action. He lamented that he came from a rural background and that I should understand his plight. He wept so profusely that he nearly fell to his knees before me, but the moment I turned him down, he instantly changed his tune. "You recorded that video secretly, Hugh! You're the one breaking the law here!"I stated unhurriedly, "It used to be my room, so what I did with the cameras in my own space is none of your business."Michael snarled, "Is that even your house? You're just a pathetic stray, Hugh. You actually think you can move in and claim someone else's place, huh? You should take a good look at yourself before you start dreaming beyond your station!"I chuckled and asked, "You must be furious knowing that even a stray gets to live there while you can'

I couldn't believe that Monica would dismiss everything that had happened as nothing more than me making a fuss. I closed my eyes, fighting back the tears threatening to surface, and when I opened them again, my gaze held nothing but derision. "If I remember correctly, you were the one who told me to keep my distance. I've barely moved out for a month, and you're already regretting it, huh?""I do regret it." Monica straight up admitted it, completely catching me off guard. She was staring at me with an unmistakable intensity in her eyes, making it hard for me to meet her gaze. "I've done a lot of thinking lately—I don't want you living so far away from me anymore. I'll end things with Michael, so you need to give up that job of yours back in the countryside and never go back there again." I was left almost speechless by her onslaught of words. I couldn't help but wonder what gave her the right to do whatever she pleased with me. I mused that I was nothing more than a dog she co

Michael, believing that we were merely putting on a show, adjusted his sleeve, exposing the watch on his wrist. "I'll consider forgiving you as long as you offer me an apology before the entire faculty and student body and vow never to pursue Monica again."I didn't take Michael's threat to heart, merely fixing my gaze on the watch on his wrist. It was the birthday gift I had given Monica, purchased with the wages I earned during a two-month summer job I secretly worked after becoming an adult. It was just a gift, though, so once it was given, how she chose to handle it was entirely up to her. I had no interest in continuing to watch the act they were putting on, so I simply sent the video of Michael staging everything himself to his class's group chat.It was then that everyone's phone chimed with a notification, prompting them to click on the video. In the next instant, a chorus of gasps filled the room.Michael had been too arrogant to watch at first, but when he noticed some
