Chapter 2 Incessant

Author: Sketchy
In my previous life, I worked myself to the bone after I started going out with Hazel, all to make more money. Hazel said she'd put in the application for me, but it failed. She then tried to convince me not to repeat the year, citing that the higher-ups were particular about this.

I bought her story. Eventually, I wanted to apply for the entrance exam for adults, but she said it was useless. I went for it anyway.

However, my alarm bell didn't ring on the day of the exam, and I was late. I demanded to know if Hazel was the one who turned the alarm off.

Innocently, she said it was, since she didn't want the alarm to interrupt my sleep. Rage filled my head, and I started trembling. Hazel hugged me. "Let's get married, Michael. I'll love you forever, with or without the degree."

I hugged her back and cried my eyes out. There was no way I would happily accept this result, not when I'd worked my ass off for it.

Down the line, Hazel told me she botched up her project and incurred a ton of debt, and she couldn't pay it off. I was drowning in love back then, so I worked three jobs just to help her out. Four jobs if I could make it sometimes.

Now that I think about it, she probably only married me just to keep me in check, just in case I got in the way of Josiah's future.

I got back to the classroom, packed my stuff, and left school. Once I was home, my deskmate texted me. "Hazel's looking for you everywhere."

I texted him back, though I didn't really remember what I replied. 'She still won't give up,' I thought.

My parents were working in another state. When they found out what my results were, they sent me money and ordered a cake for me. "We can't come back now, but we promise we'll be there next month."

I could understand where they came from. They were construction site workers, and one day of absence meant less or no food on the table.

There were two more days until the application deadline.

I was in no hurry to fill in the forms, but someone was.

That night, I went out for a stroll, and I ran into Hazel. She smiled at me. "Oh, Michael. What are the odds?"

"I thought you lived in westside?"

That did not faze Hazel. "I have something to do here. Where are you going? I can come with you."

Icily, I shot back, "No, and stay away from me."

Hazel froze, and she put on a mask of hurt. "D-Do you hate me?"

I glared at her. "Try going to the depths of hatred, then go lower. You'll see my hatred for you there. Stay. Away. From. Me."

Hazel nearly choked on herself. She probably couldn't understand why my hatred for her ran so deep, given that she was the school's madonna and a very popular person.

I'd have stabbed her and watched her bleed to her death right there and then, but murder was a crime, and that was the only thing stopping me.

"At least give me a reason for your hate," she said softly, her eyes still glued to me.

Yes, Hazel was beautiful. There was a reason I fell for her in my past life.

Then, suddenly, a voice from afar spoke. "Hazel? I wasn't expecting you here." Josiah ran up to her and grabbed her arm.

I could see Hazel stiffening up for a moment. This was my first time seeing Josiah up close. This was the person who stole my future in my past life.

"Who are you?" Josiah looked at me warily.

I put on a smile. "Michael Marineson. I'm Hazel's schoolmate."

Josiah was a little shocked. "I thought you said you were getting me snacks?"

Oh, so this was really a chance encounter. Hazel didn't react weirdly after that. "Slipped my mind. Just go home. I have something to settle here."

Josiah raised his voice, "What's that supposed to mean, Hazel?"

Hazel pushed Josiah away. I had no idea what she said to him, but then she came back. "That's my mother's friend's son, Michael."

I asked, "And you're telling me… why?"

Hazel's tone turned serious. "Because I like you, and I don't want you to take anything the wrong way."

Ew. I wanted to hurl. This again? Frigidly, I answered, "But I don't like you. You disgust me."

Hazel clenched her fists. "What did I do wrong?"

I stared at her intently. "Your face. That's what's wrong with you."

'And your personality,' I added in my head.

Hazel opened her mouth, but I wasn't going to waste my time arguing with her, so I kept moving forward.

Behind me, Hazel shouted, "I won't give up, Michael!"

I sneered silently. 'Only two more days left. Let's see what you can do about it,' I mused. I would only hand in my application right before the window closed. They would never get the chance to steal my spot.

The summer holidays came, and I got a part-time job to support myself.Maybe I was seeing things, but I swear someone was keeping an eye on me. Every time I turned around, however, I saw nothing but air. Eventually, I shrugged it off.I would get paid every two weeks, and to my surprise, there was an extra 1,000 in my pay. One thousand was nothing to laugh at, especially in this era.The boss said, "It's a reward. We made some big sales lately."I accepted the gift happily. My shift was over, and I was going to get some chicken drumsticks for myself. To my astonishment, the shop owner was holding a buy-one-get-three-free promotion. 'Today's my lucky day, I guess,' I thought to myself.I got my reward, and when it was the turn of the guy behind me, the shop owner only gave him one drumstick. The guy would not stand for this. "Hey, you gave him four drumsticks! You have a promotion going on, remember?"The shop owner looked at me. I noticed his stiff look. "The promotion's over ju

The scandal made its way to the news, of course. The public did not take it kindly, and people cursed the Quinleys every day. Though the Internet was still in its infancy here, it still existed, and the court of public opinion could kill them.Hazel's father and Josiah's verdict hadn't been decided just yet, but I heaved a sigh of relief. Things were nearing its end.Or so I thought.Hazel came to me again. I was going grocery shopping, but she stopped me. She looked haggard, and her head hung low, but she wouldn't talk.I clutched my butterfly knife tightly, alarm bells ringing in my head. "What do you want?"She raised her head, her eyes meeting mine. There was a lot in her gaze. Hoarsely, she said, "Michael…"I said nothing. I assumed she wanted me to forgive Josiah and her father. And then she asked, "You've been reborn as well, haven't you?"Shocked and shaken, I started running."I-I won't hurt you!" said Hazel quickly.I stopped in my tracks and stared at her. "I know

I told the cops everything and left the station. Hazel followed me, but she did not look lively. No, she looked dead, and she called out to me, "Michael."I turned around."I'm sorry. Are you happy now?" She wanted to cry, but tears would not come to her.I looked at her. She was still alive, so I shook my head. "Not unless you die."Hazel looked hurt. It was probably an act. I had no idea why she would put on that mask even now. We were past the point of pretending."I loved you, Michael. I've been keeping an eye on you since about a year ago."Oh, ew. That was just nauseating. I would not stand for that lie. "Because you knew I would score well in the exam."Hazel shook her head, crying. "No, I did love you. You'd always get the food from the last stall in the cafeteria, and you'd always look out the window while you read. I know a lot about you. Your habits, too."Ah, right. She did know me intimately in my past life.So why did she kill me? There was no way she would do th

Josiah and Hazel came out as well, and Hazel panicked the moment she saw me.I raised my voice, "Where's your acceptance letter, Josiah?"The cops being here hinted that something was wrong. "The letter? I didn't get any acceptance letter."My eyes were still on him. "No way."The officer patted my back. She said, "It's okay, Michael. We'll handle this."Hazel's father stood up straighter. "If you want to accuse me of stealing your spot, Michael, at least give us proof."I wiped my tears away. "The acceptance letter is proof." My ID number was printed on it. The Internet was not as advanced twenty years ago, or none of this would've happened.Josiah paled and looked at Hazel, but she hung her head low and kept her silence. The officer went inside and asked, "Can you show me your acceptance letter, Mr. Ferguson?"Ferguson was starting to get anxious. "You do not have the right to see that."The officer grinned and showed him her police ID.That made him cry. "What do I do, Da

Hazel hung up. "You're reading too much into it."She was still trying to play dumb even now? Unbelievable. I slapped her. "How low can you go, Quinley? You're going to steal everything I worked for just to cheer Josiah up? Honestly, you disgust me!"Hazel went red, but her eyes never left me. "This is a misunderstanding, Michael."I answered, "I applied for Greatpeak, not the University of Law. Lover boy is not going to be a lawyer."That made Hazel panic. She gripped my shoulders. "Please, I beg you. Just give your spot to him. I'll give you anything. Anything!"I flung her hands off me and icily answered, "Ten billion, then.""What?""Ten billion dollars, and he can have my spot."Hazel was stunned, and I laughed. "If you can't afford my price, don't make a promise you can't keep. You have no shame, do you?"Hazel didn't care about my insults anymore. She said, "His parents died saving my life! I owe him!"I shoved her away and raised my voice, "That's your problem! Don't

That drove Josiah mad, and he lunged at me, but Hazel blurted, "Calm down, Josiah. Just hold it in."Josiah calmed down, but if looks could kill, he would've murdered me right there and then. "This isn't over, Michael! You'll pay for this!"I smiled, took my seat, and dug in. The people around us were giving me stares, but I paid them no mind. I told Hazel to peel the prawns for me, and she did as she was told.Josiah couldn't take it anymore. He excused himself to the bathroom, and Hazel left not too long after.Someone asked, "Say, how'd you get the school's madonna to only have eyes for you?"I looked at him. "She'd only have eyes for you, too, if you aced your entrance exam."The guy smiled sheepishly, but I knew he didn't buy that story. Sometimes I wondered if Hazel would sacrifice herself and date someone like me if I refused her request to fill in my application.I put my fork down and went to the bathroom.Inside, Josiah was holding Hazel's hand, crying his eyes out.
