Chapter 3

Author: Triple Jasmine
After leaving Simone, I headed to Luminara Opera House, where Lucio and I had agreed to meet.

My phone rang.

"Viola, you should go in and watch the opera yourself. I might not make it," Lucio said. "Bella had a sudden heart attack. I need to stay with her."

His voice came through the receiver, and beneath it, I could faintly hear Bella's weak, trembling sobs in the background.

"But—"

"That's it. I'll make it up to you next time," he added.

Before I could say another word, the call ended with a cold, final beep.

Just as I put my phone away and took a step forward, a thick cloth clamped down over my mouth and nose from behind. A sharp, pungent odor rushed into my lungs.

There was a sedative on it. I struggled for less than half a minute before darkness swallowed my vision.

When I came to, the drug hadn't fully worn off. My head felt unbearably heavy, as though it had been filled with molten lead.

My hands were tightly bound behind the chair, and the tape over my mouth had been ripped off roughly, leaving my skin raw and burning.

A rough, chilling male voice spoke near my ear, "Don Ferrari, your fiancee is in our hands. If you want her back alive, be ready to pay the price. We'll be waiting at the old warehouse in the South Pier."

As his words ended, a masked man crouched beside me and pressed a phone to my ear.

"Listen. This is the voice of your beautiful fiancee."

Before I could utter a sound, a sharp, icy blade pierced my wrist, tearing a scream of pain from my throat.

"Viola!" Lucio's panicked voice rang out on the other end, but it was quickly drowned out by Bella's weak, deliberately pitiful moans.

"Lucio, my heart hurts so much. Am I going to die? I don't want to die…"

"Bella, don't be afraid. I'm here," Lucio said softly.

Then, his voice returned through the phone. "Viola, hold on a little longer. With your abilities, you can handle this, right? I'll stabilize Bella here first, and then I'll come find you. Va bene. That's decided."

Before I could say anything, Lucio ended the call.

I couldn't tell if it was shock or numbness, but I found myself completely speechless.

The flat tone from the disconnected line pierced straight through my chest. His words, "With your abilities, you can handle this", echoed in my ears again and again.

It almost felt absurd. In his eyes, my strength had become a justification for my sacrifice.

I met the abductors' eyes with a hollow, cold smile that held no warmth. "Do as you please."

After the call ended, Lucio paced outside the operating room, repeatedly checking his watch.

During the brief wait, he called Underboss Marco Russo and gave quick orders. "Send a small, trusted team to the old warehouse in the South Pier. Make contact, negotiate, and buy time. Don't let them harm Viola. I'm coming. Make sure she's safe."

About 20 minutes later, the doors of the operating room opened. Lucio stepped forward at once. "Is Bella alright?"

The doctor frowned in confusion. "Are you certain this is the right patient? According to our checks, everything appears completely normal."

Lucio froze. "There's nothing wrong with her heart?"

The doctor shook his head. "No, Mr. Ferrari. All her indicators are normal."

Just as Lucio was about to ask more, the phone in his pocket rang.

It was Marco, the one he had sent to the old warehouse in the South Pier.

He answered immediately, and Marco's hoarse, strained voice came through, "Mr. Ferrari, there's been an explosion at the warehouse. After we extinguished the fire, we found only one female body."

A photo was sent immediately afterward.

In it, the body was burned beyond recognition. Around its neck hung the emerald necklace he had once carefully placed on me.

As soon as Lucio saw it, the phone slipped from his grasp and hit the floor.

I even moved out of the villa to stay away from Lucio, yet somehow Bella still managed to track me down."You shameless bitch! You were already dead, so why did you come back to seduce Lucio again?"I had just come back from grocery shopping when Bella suddenly appeared around the corner and shoved me. The basket went flying, spilling vegetables and fruit all over the street."It was Lucio who wouldn't leave me alone, Bella," I said as I bent down to pick everything up.She looked like a woman possessed, pointing at my face as she hurled curses at me. "I finally made Lucio forget you! Do you have any idea how I survived all these years? And now you just show up again! I hate you! Why don't you just stay dead?"I straightened up, smirking faintly. "You're pathetic. After all these years, you're still afraid of a dead woman."She pulled an emerald necklace from her pocket, her voice trembling with rage. "Every time Lucio held this, he would mumble your name and cry himself sick! I

I paused, but I didn't turn around."What do you want me to say?" I asked calmly. Before he could say anything, I added, "I've always felt like there's nothing left between us. Are you trying to settle old scores by questioning me like this?"Lucio went pale. "Even if we had our problems before, we should've talked them out. You left without a word and just disappeared. Do you really think that was okay? Do you have any idea how miserable I've been these past two years? "If I hadn't come to Costa Solara, would you have ever come back to Novaterra? I wronged you in my past life, sure, but that's over. This is a new life. Why are you still keeping your distance? Why are you still trying to walk away from me?"As he went on with his complaints, I stayed calm and detached. When he finally stopped, I said, "In our past life, you chose Bella while I lay in the hospital for two months. In this life, you gave her my special tonic, risked my life, abandoned me repeatedly, and even hung up

Lucio's great-great-grandfather had been one of the Dons who left for Novaterra after La Visione di Novaterra. In a way, Costa Solara was his homeland, and his famiglia had long enjoyed friendly relations with Carlo's famiglia. This time, Lucio had come to Costa Solara because he had been ambushed and nearly lost his life. Carlo had taken him in so he could recover from his injuries. As the family doctor worked on his injuries, I felt a tangle of emotions I couldn't name. Compared to before, Lucio was thinner, more worn, and deeply weathered.I didn't want to run into him, so I deliberately avoided him. I even volunteered to handle the task of retrieving the herbs, asking Carlo to leave it to me, all so I could stay away from the villa while Lucio was there. At the time, I didn't realize the herbs were meant for Lucio's treatment. When Carlo later told me that Lucio wanted to thank me in person, I was so stunned that I could hardly speak. My first instinct was to refuse and disapp

I hadn't died. The thugs had counted on using me as a bargaining chip, but there was no way I was going to let that happen. They didn't start the fire—I did.At the far end of the warehouse, I found a hidden stash of explosives. I severed the ropes and let a candle fall onto the explosives. The blaze roared to life, and I disappeared into the turmoil at the South Pier. As for the necklace, I had deliberately handed it to a soldatessa, just to make her drop her guard. The body Lucio later found belonged to her, not me.When I boarded the ship bound for Costa Solara, a rush of freedom washed over me.Back in Costa Solara, I met many of the city's young elite, including the heir of the De Luca famiglia, Carlo De Luca.Since I was among the rare women in Costa Solara who could handle a gun, I was swiftly brought into the famiglia's operations. Carlo noticed me almost immediately.Knowing my past, he often marveled at La Visione di Novaterra and how it had driven so many famiglie in

Lucio fell into a long, endless dream. In that dream, I never wrote a farewell letter. I was never abducted. I never died. We even married under the blessings of the crowd, but married life was far from happy.Bella, his childhood sweetheart from the lower class, had taken her own life at home after failing to repay a loan shark.Lucio became convinced that the loan had been a trap I set in secret. That misunderstanding made him hate me for ten long years. In the end, I even went to handle the most dangerous territory at the South Pier for his sake. In the dream, he had steeled his heart and sworn not to look for me, yet he still led his men to the South Pier. He traded his own life for mine."I only wish that in our next life, we never cross paths," he heard himself say. "Please stop clinging to me. Let me go, per favore…"Lucio didn't understand why he had spoken such words in the dream. He even saw what happened after his death—I was cursed as a witch. His heart twisted in

Bella was pushed out at that moment, looking perfectly fine.Lucio stared at her stiffly and asked, "Bella, didn't you say your heart condition relapsed? Why did the doctor say there's nothing wrong with you?"Bella stepped down from the operating bed, walked straight to him, and wrapped her arms around him.A cold, ridiculous suspicion took hold, leaving Lucio unable to believe what he was thinking."I knew it," she murmured softly. "In your heart, Lucio, I will always come first. Isn't that right?"Lucio pulled her away. "Bella, look at me. Did your heart condition really relapse? Why did the doctor say you're fine?"Her eyes flickered. She knew she could not fool him anymore, so she reverted to the same old trick. Tears welled up in her eyes as she said, "I just wanted to prove that I matter to you too. I didn't mean to lie. I just felt insecure."The truth hit Lucio like a bucket of ice water poured over his chest. He shoved her away hard. "You're beyond saving. Do you have
