The system had warned her that the environment had changed.

She had thought it meant the outbreak had started earlier than expected.

Now she wondered whether something else had changed too.

The infected were behaving differently. Some seemed able to recognize people.

Others appeared to follow her specifically. And one had known about her death.

She touched her forehead.

A dull pain remained behind her eyes. Lucien noticed.

“Another vision?”

“No.”

“Then what is wrong?”

“I am trying to understand

“Are you planning to go there?” she asked.“Not yet.”“Good.”Lucien raised an eyebrow.“Why?”“We need more information before entering another research facility.”“Agreed.” He studied her.“You seem very interested in that location.”"I'm interested in staying alive."A faint smile touched his face.“That makes two of us.”He turned toward the door.“Get some rest. We have a long day ahead.”Vespera nodded. But as he reached the doorway, she spoke again.“Lucien.”He stopped.“What?”“If the infection continues changing, ordinary shelters won't be enough.”“I know.”“We need a place that can survive a long siege. Somewhere with water, food, medicine, and strong walls.”Lucien looked at her for several seconds.“Are you suggesting we leave the compound?”"I'm suggesting we prepare before we are forced to leave."He nodded slowly."Then we'll discuss it tomorrow."He left.Vespera sat quietly.A long-term shelter. That was exactly what she needed. Her current supplies were useful, but

“Get it off him!?” Vespera moved closer. She aimed at the creature's head. Lucien's arm was in the way.The creature opened its mouth. Its teeth came dangerously close to his face.Vespera fired. The bullet struck its shoulder. It screamed. Lucien pushed with all his strength. The creature rolled sideways. Kaelen grabbed its arm and pulled it away.Lucien scrambled to his feet.“Move!”They ran. The corridor was filled with infected. Some came from the research ward. Others emerged from the rooms.Kaelen fired several shots. Vespera grabbed Daniel's arm. They moved toward the stairwell. Behind them, the mutated creature rose again. Its body shook. It turned its head toward Vespera. Then it spoke.“Vespera.” She stopped. The voice was weak, but the name was clear.Lucien grabbed her hand.“Don?t stop!”The creature took one step forward.“Come back”Vespera's heart pounded. She had heard that voice before. Not from the same creature. But the way it said her name was familiar. It sounded a

Thalia immediately stood.“I’m coming too.” Lucien looked at her.“You’re needed here.” Daniel could be downstairs.”“And if we find more infected, I need someone who can treat the injured.”Thalia hesitated. Vespera looked at her.“We’ll find him if he’s still alive.”Thalia swallowed. Please don’t leave him behind.”“We won’t.” Lucien gave Kaelen a signal. They continued down the corridor. The hospital became darker as they moved away from the emergency department. The walls were covered with scratches. Some of the doors had been forced open.Others remained locked.Vespera noticed something strange near the stairs.A trail of blood led toward the basement. But there were no footprints beside it.She stopped.“Wait.” Lucien turned.“What is it?” Look at the floor.”Kaelen lowered his weapon. The blood trail continued toward the stairwell.Lucien examined it.“Someone was dragged.”“Possibly.” Vespera crouched. The blood was still wet.She touched the edge of the stain with one glov

Lucien stepped closer. “What happened downstairs?”Peter looked toward him. They opened the rooms.“What rooms?”“The rooms where they kept the patients.”Vespera felt her stomach tighten.“Did you see what was inside?” Peter nodded slowly.“They were alive.” His eyes filled with fear.“But they weren’t human anymore.”A loud bang came from somewhere down the corridor.Everyone turned. Then another bang followed.Kaelen raised his weapon.“Something is coming.” Lucien looked at Peter.“Can you walk?” Peter tried to stand, but his legs failed.Thalia caught him.“I can help him.” One of the guards will carry him,” Lucien said. Before anyone could move, the hospital lights flickered.A low sound came from the ceiling. Then the emergency lights turned on.Red light filled the corridor. Vespera looked toward the far end.A figure stood near the treatment room entrance. It was wearing a hospital gown. Its head hung forward. Its arms were covered in dark veins.“Don’t move,” Kaelen ordered.

Vespera shook her head. He was impossible. But she did not argue again. She had more important things to worry about.Thirty minutes later, the vehicles left the compound. The city looked worse than it had the previous night.Several buildings were burning. Abandoned cars blocked the roads, and broken streetlights lay across the sidewalks. The streets were filled with the infected. Some walked slowly between the vehicles. Others stood motionless near shop entrances.Vespera watched them through the window. She remembered Ravencrest before the outbreak. The streets had been filled with people rushing to work, children walking to school, and shop owners opening their businesses. Now the city looked like a place abandoned for years.“How far is the hospital?” she asked.“About fifteen minutes if the road is clear,” Kaelen replied from the front seat.“And if it isn’t?”“Then we find another road.” Lucien sat beside Vespera. He had been silent since they left. His attention remained on th

The conversation in the hidden room was still fresh in her mind. Lucien hadn't told her everything, but he had admitted the records were real. People had disappeared before the outbreak. Some had died under strange circumstances, while others had vanished. And somehow, those incidents were connected to the infection. She walked toward the bed and sat down. Her body was tired, but her mind refused to rest. What she had seen since the outbreak began was becoming harder to explain. The infected didn't behave like the creatures she remembered from her previous life. Some moved faster than ordinary infected. Others appeared to recognize people. And then there was the creature that had spoken her name.Vespera rubbed her forehead.“How much has changed?”She had asked herself that question several times, but she still had no answer. In her previous life, the early outbreak had been terrible, but it had followed a pattern. People became infected, lost their minds, and attacked anyone they fou
