Chapter 2

Author: Noodle Lover
I struggled with all my might and broke free from the man's grip. But I had barely taken a few steps when someone else slashed my back.

The pain made me stagger, and I fell to my knees. In an instant, my clothes were drenched in warm blood.

I knew it was one of Antonio's enemies. The underground casinos in Oldshore had claimed so much territory that the list of people who wanted him or anyone else close to him dead could stretch for miles.

I tried reaching for the knife in my bag, but my arm was wrenched back. They then snatched my phone and smashed it into pieces.

"You wretched woman! Behave!" a man snarled, yanking my hair as he dragged me toward a black SUV parked by the curb.

Just as I was about to give up, a familiar black Bentley turned the corner. It was Antonio's car.

"Antonio!" I screamed hoarsely.

I summoned the last of my strength and thrashed desperately, trying to get the attention of whoever was inside.

Then, the car slowed. He must have seen me!

But the next second, the Bentley accelerated, vanishing from the intersection.

Through the window, I saw Antonio raise a hand to shield Silvia's eyes. Almost immediately, every fight and shred of hope drained from me.

Of course. Since Silvia was in the car, there was no way Antonio would let someone so pure and delicate witness such a gruesome scene.

Pain and cold washed over me. My vision darkened, and the metallic tang of blood clouded my mind as I drifted toward unconsciousness.

When I came to, I found myself in a private hospital room.

The door was slightly ajar, and a low voice slipped into the room. "Boss, Mrs. Gallo's badly hurt this time. If she finds out about Ms. Bianchi…"

It was Antonio's personal doctor.

But before he could finish, Antonio cut him off coldly, "Watch your mouth! Your job is to treat Valentina. Don't interfere where it's none of your business!

"Besides, Valentina has been running the streets for years. She has seen every ruthless trick imaginable. But Silvia is different. She's pure and innocent. She can't handle Valentina."

Antonio stubbed out his cigar before lowering his voice even further. "If she makes a fuss when she wakes, bring her brother here. He's her only weakness. There's no way she'd ignore him."

I clenched my fists until my nails dug into my palms, the metallic tang of blood spreading in my mouth.

On the night I helped Antonio take down Oldshore's largest casino, he dropped to one knee and promised me, "Valentina, as long as I'm around, no one in Oldshore's underworld will touch you."

It was the same promise and the same protection. Yet now, they were meant for Silvia.

Meanwhile, I, the one he had once cherished above all else, had become the danger he needed to guard against.

Just then, footsteps approached. I quickly closed my eyes, pretending I had just woken.

"You're awake," said Antonio. "I sent someone to check. It was the Montezaran you crippled at the casino last time."

He came to the bedside, dropped a folder onto the bed, and added, "If you sign this settlement, they'll give up control of the east side."

Our eyes met, but I couldn't speak. As it turned out, all my injuries were nothing more than bargaining chips in his business dealings.

"Antonio, when did you make this deal?" I croaked.

Was it when they were dragging me along the street? Or when he learned the Montezaran was going to strike me?

Antonio frowned in response. Clearly, he was displeased by my question.

Seeing that, I let out a self-deprecating chuckle and stopped asking. After all, the answer no longer mattered.

Perhaps to comfort me, Antonio stayed with me for the next two days, handling business as best he could.

He was never without his phone. Still, he would look at it and smile in a way I had never seen before.

As I stared at Antonio's profile, memories of our first meeting ten years ago came flooding back.

Back then, he had been caught cheating and was being hunted. His body was covered in blood as he hid under an abandoned iron bridge.

I had been on my way to practice piano, but when our eyes met, I felt a surge of pity and turned toward him. Little did I know I was stepping into an abyss.

Later, my father had accumulated massive gambling debts and was driven to his death by a drug lord.

I, on the other hand, was taken to pay off his debts.

A poisoned syringe hovered over my vein, and at the very last moment, Antonio arrived with reinforcements and saved me. He even took a bullet to the chest protecting me.

Standing outside the operating room, I realized for the first time that in his world, innocence and kindness were useless.

From then on, I was no longer a celebrated pianist. Instead, I had become a feared gunwoman in the underworld.

I assembled guns for Antonio, dismantled bombs, and seized one casino after another.

I knew my hands were stained with blood and dirt, marks that would never wash away. But no matter how much the world deemed me tainted, he had no right to.

Valentina's POVMy right hand underwent three surgeries, and I spent five months in a rehabilitation center in New Troy. Every night, when the pain woke me, I went up to the rooftop to clear my head. That was where I met Sergio Lombardi. He had broken his leg in a ski race, yet he still sneaked onto the rooftop for a drink, making sure his doctors didn't find out. I asked if he had won. "Of course. I won by just 0.01 seconds," he answered with a cocky grin. "I could never lose, Valentina."On the day I was discharged, Sergio handed me a love letter, his cheeks flushed. For the first time in a long while, my heart seemed to stir. Later, I learned that he was the youngest son of a mafia family in New Troy, raised under the Lombardis' watchful eyes. Whenever he spoke of the family business, his eyes glinted with eagerness.I was drawn to Sergio, but the ghosts of my past kept me at arm's length. After that, I took a part-time job at a piano academy, and he picked me up afte

Antonio tightened his grip, his voice firm as he tried to reassure her. "Don't be afraid, Silvia. He hurt you. I was only teaching him a lesson.""N-No! That's not what happened!" Silvia stared at him. "That day, it was Valentina who saved me. They were trying to hurt me, and she shielded me behind her! She's such a good person. How could I ever betray her?"A flicker of panic crossed Antonio's eyes. Clearly, Silvia knew now she was his lover. Still, he tried to explain. "I didn't mean to lie to you. Now, you're the only one I—"Silvia shook her head desperately and broke free from his grip. "Do you know why Valentina went to the church that day?""Why?" Antonio asked, a sense of dread rising within him. "She went there to pray f

Third-person POVThe next day, Antonio accompanied Silvia to her prenatal checkup. On the drive back, she ventured the question gently. "Antonio, the doctor says the baby's doing well. Does that mean we can finally have the wedding?"In the past, he would have been over the moon. But now, he felt a flicker of irritation. Antonio lowered his head and pressed a kiss to the top of Silvia's head. "I've been busy with the casino lately. Has this been hard on you?""I just want to know when we'll get married."Silvia looked up at him, her eyes clouded with sadness. She added, "If you don't love me… I can leave."Antonio fell silent for a moment, then replied without much thought, "Next week. We'll have the ceremony next week. Don't worry about it. Just take care of yourself and the baby, okay?"…Back at the casino, Silvia slipped into the records vault while Antonio was in a meeting. None of the guards dared stop her.But no matter how thoroughly she searched, she couldn't find

Third-person POVThat day, after dealing with traitors at the casino, Antonio was about to pick up a small cake for Silvia as usual. Right then, a sound playing from the store attendant's phone caught his attention. "Excuse me. May I see that?" he asked. The store attendant looked up in surprise and hesitated for a beat before handing the phone to Antonio. It was a viral video with millions of likes. At the center of the recital hall, a woman in a striking red dress played "The Evermore Marriage", her focus absolute. She was like a rose in full bloom, fierce and radiant. No matter how grainy the footage was, Antonio recognized her at once. It was Valentina. He could hear his heart hammering in his chest as one memory after another of Valentina came rushing back. The first time they met, Antonio was covered in blood, and she appeared in a white dress, like an angel stepping into his darkness. She was only 18 then. Later, he had risked his life to keep her in the underwo

Third-person POVSilvia looked like a deer in headlights. She lifted her head in panic, and her eyes locked with Antonio's, cold and unyielding. "I-I'm sorry…" she stammered. "I just wanted to come in and have a look. The guy at the door said no one lives here."Antonio's gaze fell on the press-on nail on the floor. It was something Valentina had made herself. The nails were paper-thin, yet inside they hid a clever mechanism. They were sharp enough to slice through skin or even thin metal. In fact, it wasn't just these press-on nails. Valentina's earrings, hairpins, and even a single lipstick could conceal a deadly mechanism. Her skills as a gunwoman had never been in question. Antonio saw the unease in Silvia's eyes, and his expression gradually softened. Then, he stepped forward before gently pulling her into his arms. "I'm not upset with you. These were my late wife's things. If you like them, I can have a new set made just for you," he reassured her.Silvia looked up,

Third-person POVIn the VIP ward, Antonio dropped to one knee the moment Silvia opened her eyes. His palm brushed gently against her cheek, while his gaze was heavy with guilt."It's my fault for not protecting you and for frightening you."Silvia shook her head lightly. Then, as if she had just remembered something, she asked, "What about Ms. Romano? The one who was taken with me. How is she?"Antonio pulled her into his arms and kissed the top of her head. "Silvia, why are you always so kind? I just like how pure you are."His words made Silvia's cheeks burn, and she forgot entirely to ask about Valentina. …Only after Silvia fell asleep did Antonio leave the room. Outside, he spoke to his men in a cold voice. "Clear out the hilltop estate. Anything that shouldn't be there, throw it out. Silvia will move in as soon as she's discharged."One of his subordinates nodded before handing him a file. "This is the compensation agreement for Ms. Romano. As you instructed, the two c
