Then the four men in dark suits came forward, their shiny shoes clinking against the damp pavement. They came like the predators, calm, confident and with no fear.

One of them said, “Mr. Vance,” his voice was cold and flat. “You have made a big mistake.”

The man who was hurt by the bull next to me laughed bitterly. It was "the mistake to come here, not the mistake to leave.

I didn't get a chance to ask questions. I didn't have time to think. In my past life I had been killed by hesitation. This time I went on my instincts.

Then I took the taser out of my bag and pressed the button.

The two prongs hit the closest man square in the chest. He was convulsing with his eyes rolling back and fell down like a brick wall. The other three froze for a second, a second too long because I managed to seize hold of the man who'd been wounded and pull him to his feet.

"Can you run?" I hissed.

I'll have to try," he grunted.

I took the alley as we bolted and pounded my heart in my ears. The other men called after us and started running after us. I heard a gunshot and a bullet bounced off the brick wall close to my head.

I didn't look back. I just ran.

We came out of the alley and into the bustling street. Cars honked. Pedestrians screamed. I pulled the man into my Jeep and slammed him into the passenger seat and got in behind the wheel.

The engine started up. I hit a foot on the gas and weaved in and out of traffic, almost hitting a taxi. I saw them in the rear view mirror with their faces twisted with fury, the three of them coming out of the alley. One of them picked up a radio and put it to his mouth.

They were calling for backup.

I kept driving until the lights of the city behind us, the road became dark and winding mountain passes.

The man next to me had lots of blood pouring out of him. His face was as white as a sheet of paper and his breathing was shallow. I stopped at a rest stop and retrieved my first aid kit, and began my duties.

This will hurt, I told myself and pressed a bandage against the wound on his arm.

He flinched, but didn't shout out loud. "I've had worse."

"Who are you?" I demanded. “But why did those men want to kill you?”

He stared at me for a long moment, his blue eyes blank, My name is Adrian Vance. Three weeks ago, my team was stationed in a secret research lab in the northern part of the country to test a new virus that had the potential to kill 90 percent of the human population.

My blood ran cold. "The apocalypse."

He nodded grimly. “It's not natural, it's engineered, and it will be released in just twenty-eight days.”

Twenty-eight days. Thirty days before the end I was reborn. This meant that I had already given up two days.

How would you get this information? I asked.

He said, "I helped to construct the facility, and I feel a sense of guilt. “When I gave my bosses a heads-up, they figured they couldn't handle having me around, so they've been trying to find me ever since.”

I sat back and my mind was working overtime. This changed everything. The apocalypse wasn't just an accidental calamity, it was an intentional attack. Someone wanted the world to come to an end. Someone was intent on determining who were the survivors.

And I had just become an easy target.

Why did you come to my aid? Adrian asked, breaking the silence.

I took a look at him, I really took a look at him. He was a danger, a haunted man, and he was definitely hiding something. He had his knowledge, however. Anything that might help me out.

I just said, "I'm going to live,"” I said simply. "And I can't do that by myself.

He had a slight smile playing on his face. Are you not one of the ordinary folks,

I stood up and extended my hand, "No," I said. "I'm not."

We drove up the remainder of the distance to the cabin in quiet. As we went to our place, the sun was already rising over the mountains, and the sky was tinged with gold and crimson.

Adrian was hobbling into the house and fell on the old sofa. I had the door shut and examined the windows and I lit a fire in the stone fireplace.

We must arm ourselves," he said in a weak but firm voice. “Plus ammunition, if my old employers find us, we will have no chance.”

I opened my hand to show that I already had a stockpile, I said. In my hand appeared a box of instant noodles.

Adrian's eyes went wide. What in the fuck is this?

I tossed him the noodles and said, "A gift. The reason for my survival is this."

He looked at me for some time, and then he gave a low whistle. “It's a very surprising person.”

You do not have any idea," I said.

However, before I could finish my sentence, my iPhone rang. I quickly looked at the screen.

It is a text from Jason.

I know what you did, emptying our account was a mistake, I'm coming for what's mine and I'm bringing friends.

Attached to the message was a photo. It was my cabin. It must have been no more than an hour ago when someone took it from the treeline.

My heart stopped.

They had found me.

And they were already here.

We left the farmhouse as dawn was breaking. The fire had spread to the east fence but not touching the stone walls that protected the house. It didn't matter. The farmhouse had already suffered an attack and from now it was compromised. Plus, the Syndicate knew where it was and an airborne virus was spreading throughout the valley.I heard myself saying, "Everyone grab a bag, we are going to the mountains. It will be a while before we reach new land, so we only take necessities, nothing else", while standing by the jeep.Martha got to work quickly, tossing in baby formula and diapers and a couple of packs of flour. Chloe only stuffed a small plastic pouch containing a picture of Ben and her. Trent, however, went searching in his room and came up with a duffel bag full of clothes and a bottle of whiskey that had been hidden at the back of his closet."No!" I snapped, grabbing the whiskey from his hands and throwing it on the dirt, "Alcohol dehydrates you, we need the water".His face r

The black-suited man stumbled into the room, rifle raised.I fired. The bolt to my crossbow found it's mark in his throat, and he crumpled, dropping his rifle with a gurgled curse."Two more!" Adrian yelled.Another soldier from the syndicate came barreling into the room, shooting wildly. He fired off a round that barely missed Martha's head, ricocheting off the stone wall to the left of the entrance.Adrian fired two rounds, and the soldier staggered back, falling against the doorframe."Trent, the door!" I yelled.Trent stood, frozen, his hammer still in his hands. He stared at the corpses on the ground as though mesmerized."Trent!" I screamed. His eyes locked with mine. For a brief moment, I saw the arrogant jackass I had known walk the halls of my old high school, a smug grin plastered across his face. But that look was gone, replaced with something else.Something deeper.Trent looked like a cornered animal."I think I saw the future," he said, almost to himself, before dropping

Time seemed to stand still.Marcus, the man in the dark suit, had my crossbow trained on my chest. He was maybe fifty yards away from me. That was too far for me to accurately fire my crossbow, but within range for him to take a clean shot at me." Don't move, Sarah. He has the high ground and a perfect shot." Adrian said from the doorway behind me."I know."What were the odds they found me that fast? I mean, Adrian warned me they were ruthless, but this was faster than I expected. I turned around to see Adrian's pale face." Do you have it?"I shook my head." I destroyed it. I didn't want them to find me."" He doesn't have it." I shouted to the man in the trees.Marcus smiled. His white teeth gleamed in the morning light." Adrian Vance downloaded classified files from our facility before he terminated it, is that right?" I don't have any data drive,"Don't play dumb,"Marcus said, his voice hardening. "Adrian Vance downloaded classified files from our facility before he burned it

The survivors walked into the farmhouse like ghost. The lady holding the little boy introduced herself as Martha, and the other two were a young couple named Ben and Chloe. They gazed out with wide, terrified eyes at the fortified windows I had in my house and at the piles of medical supplies. However, Trent walked in as one of the owners. He removed his muddy shoes, tracked dirt all over my immacate floorboards and began to look at the pantry.“So,” Trent said with a smirk on his face, leaning against my kitchen counter. "Where's the food? I'm starving. And maybe a beer to wash it down?"I replied, "You get water", sternly. “If you don’t get it, it's because you haven't earned it”.Trent laughed, looking at Adrian. "You hearing this? Look, Sarah, I'm not your employee, I'm a survivor, we all need to share what we have equally.""Equally?" I came toward him, my hand on the hunting knife at my hip. "Did you hunt the zombies that were trying to break down this door last night? Are these

The power had gone out at exactly midnight. We went from the glow of a warm yellow farmhouse in to the deep night all in the blink of an eye.All I could hear was the howling winds outside and the frantic beating of my own heart."Generator."I said as I stood in the pitch black room.Adrian knew what he was talking about when it came to generators with his experience in the military.Minutes later we had the power back up with a soft glow to this side of the farmhouse. But we were not safe.Outside the deep silence of the night was deafening.I picked up my crossbow and stood by the window overlooking the valley below.Just beyond the lights the distant blinking lights of a city slowly turned off one by one.I looked at the clock."How long will we have?""The first infected will be on foot in an hour.First hours are always the worst.People tend to panic easier at first. They're in a state of confusion"I nodded as I loaded my crossbow,"We make sure they don't make it this far"Th

The figure came into view in the headlights, standing on the porch. It was Jason. He held his hands up and his smug face. Two dark-clad men with baseball bats stood behind him. The very men of the cabin. Men I humiliated; the same men.“Sarah,” Jason said in a polished sweet voice. "Long time no see."I shut the car engine and took my crossbow from the passenger seat. Adrian pulled out his gun.I said softly, "Stay behind me.He scoffled, "I'll not do it on your account, like hell.We got out of the jeep with weapons held up. Jason's smile never faltered.Plz, put the toys down, sweetheart," he said. I don't come here to fight, I don't come here to fight.“You followed me,” I said icily. Well, that's not talking, is it?Jason shrugged. I hired a private investigator, it cost me a lot of money, but you're worth it, you took something that belongs to me.I said, 'I took what was mine. “Half of that money was my own; the divorce was legal, you signed the papers.”Jason snapped, his compo
